The London Eye, New York’s Empire State Building, the Sky Tower in Auckland and Table Mountain in South Africa are among the world renowned buildings and attractions that will have a green light trained on them on 17 March.

Also the Puerta de Alcala in Madrid. Calgary Tower. The White House. The Chicago River and numerous more around the world.

But not the Spire of Dublin.

The clowns that run Dublin City Council will have a white one.

    I think we should.

But I still cant believe we have that contraption!

I think we should have a green time machine and go back in time before the spire was constructed and assassinate it's creator... With a green gun and bullets of course... Or perhaps a green ninja suit

We need something to reflect the culture of the people living near the spire. Chinese lanterns and Nigerian flags etc.

I like the spire. There, I said it.

Yes I agree with painting the spire in the colour of the Libyan flag.

I like it too. It's actually quite attractive.

We should stick Sean Fitzpatrick on top of it to see how it feel to be raped while the population watches on.

I'm sure everybody would enjoy that.

Why don't we dig out the digital clock we had in the Liffey all them years ago and just paint that green with a pleasant message......maybe we could get them to get it to spell out strokemyclover!!!

(It being the only time of the year I can say my username to someone else without the risk of being smacked upside the head and all!)

Are you sure about this? It would mean (dun dun duuuuun!) changing the bulb.

I love the way you can go up to the top of the spire and have a great view of the city. Oh wait, you can't.

That big eyesore\urinal\her'oin needle on O'Connell Street that I still don't 'get' the meaning of.

How exactly does a big pointy thing sticking out of the ground sum up the feeling of Irish pride and our history and blah blah blah blah rabble rabble etc.

But turn it green? F*ckin stick Twink (insert any annoying Irish "celebrity") at the top of it and see how far she goes down. RED. Turn it REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDD!

ask me arse. its not an eyesore

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,563 ✭✭✭karlog

Ah the spire. The erection at the intersection, the stiffy by the liffey, the big heroin needle which represents the drug problem in Dublin which becomes obvious at O’Connell Street.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

The convention and centre will be green. IT is far more interesting and functional.

    Ok.

Hi Pals arse, is the Spire an eyesore? What's that? Oh, you spend most of the time looking at the ground like 90% of the Dublin population. Ok then.

It is. It's ridiculous and stupid. So THERE! <stomps>

Ok I'm sure it's some 'feat' of engineering. But lo and behold I don't have an Engineering Degree (gasp!). So if\when I do see it my feelings are still the same as when I first saw it.........and that was: meh.

well you could, if you found a way into the underground hatch thing where you get into it, climb the ladder thats all the way up the side of it so they have access to the light on the top, stick your lad out one of the holes and shower everyone in piss

It's Irish enough as it is: constructed with the permission of idiots in Government? Check. Waste of money? Check. Doesn#t serve any source of income (including tourist revenue)? Check. Took far too long to complete that what was quoted? Check. Looks like a piece of rubbish and has no place where it was constructed? Check.

Looks Irish enough as it is!

Some sites are going green for Paddys, would be deadly if the Spire did too considering its the mian monument. At least it would KINDA be a use for the thing...

    Ah, that thing.

Now I know what OP is on about.

If they called it the Big Prick I would have copped it straight away.

To me it looks like an expensive TV transmitter in the heart of Dublin. Nothing more, nothing less. At least if it was a mast it would serve some purpose.

It symbolises nothing more more than a monument to our lack of taste during the so called Celtic Tiger bollox. A useless piece of nothingness representing nothing.

By all means paint turn it green next week and take some photos of it. Then attach a few booster rockets to the base of it and launch the bloody thing into orbit once and for all.

With or without Twink on top of it.

The Festival Committee should arrange to hand out little green food dye tablets to all the pub goers.
We'd then have a lovely natural green stained footpaths and alley ways and a river of green around temple bar the next morning...

i dunno about you guys but the spire helps me out quite a bit. there has been many a drunken night in our fair capital when i realised i didnt know where the fook i was. then i look to the skies and see the spire and then i know where i am.

    the spire.

helping drunk people get home since 2002.

I don't mind The Spire that much. I think there were better proposals for what to build but The Spire was chosen and it's quite nice. Maybe not as nice or useful (with no possibility of generating any income), as a revolving restaurant...observation deck etc etc, but it's there, it's better than nothing (I think) and, I would have thought all the moaning and b*tching about it would have ceased all these years later!!
It would be nice to illuminate it green for Paddy's Day. Why not sure. Sounds less likely to fail and waste loads of money, than that ill-fated attempt to dye the Liffey green that year.
I think the council put on a good festival on Paddy's these days though, so I don't mock. Would like to see Skyfest back in Dublin though, where it suits me!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,076 ✭✭✭Eathrin

The spire is useless. Yes yes it is. So why don't we put it to a decent use and turn it green. It is after all one of the main symbols of our city

Always found the "it doesn't do anything" criticism levelled at the spire, what do people expect from it? There's a couple of observation decks already around the city. Must every new monument consist of having an observation deck?

It's a monument which is quite impressive looking imo it's pretty imposing but it's in no way gaudy or tacky. I like it's sleek modern and simplistic design and anybody i know who's visited from abroad liked it it's seems as though it's only the Irish that have a problem with it.

When you talk about an eyesore which was a waste of time and money,

this sh1te instantly springs to mind

Or if you look at it from a certain angle and it looks like demonic Jim Larkin is summoning it up out of the ground and firing it into the heavens.

    Hmmm, thats interesting.

So then you know if you're walkin towards it you're heading the wrong way.

Maybe it does have some uses after all.

    Nah, get a map.
