Need new trainers/runners

My knees are starting to suffer with my new fitness kick, so i know its time for new trainers, my Saucony ones are not cutting the mustard anymore. :(

Im doing high impact aerobics dvd's with strength training, so lots of jumping jacks, side lunges, squats, so i need something with good shock absorbing qualities and support for the twisting and turning, and not too expensive if possible.

What do you recommend? (womens footwear)

    Anyone? :(

Should i be going for a cross trainer rather than a running shoe?

Would i benefit from gait analysis even though i wont be running?

We have an Elverys close by that do gait analysis(if they are any good?)

I don't do alot of aerobics, but I do loads of running and you really can never go wrong with Asics. Especially if you are looking for something that has good shock absorbing quality.
I buy ones specifically for running, but there are cross trainer/aerobics ones also available.Best thing might be to go into Elverys or one of the other big sports shops and they will bring you through the various options.

Go into a few good fitness stores. and ask them about what to get. If you are doing aerobics I would expect the key is cushioning.

The staff in Elverys should be able to tell you if gait analysis will help you.

I'd strongly recommend going into Amphibian King in Bray for a gait analysis test. It's the best thing I ever did for my feet. Don't be scared, his prices are good and you've a good shot of getting a pair of trainers for less than a sh*t pair of Air Max in Champion Sports...

^ Amphibian King now have a shop concession in Ballymount, just off Greenhills road Tallaght too - I was in there a short while ago with the OH who was checking out bikes (they are Tri specialists too), and got a great gait analysis and new Mizuno trainers (for running).. Base 2 Race is the store name of which Amphibian King are part www.base2race.ie

    I train in converse.......:)

Unless you're running alot then I wouldn't be forking out on the likes of gait analysis tbh. I've always gone for Asics and they do grand. You're better off with flat soles for squatting anyways though, it'd feel weird as fcuk if I tried squatting/DLing in trainers now.

Forking out on the likes of gait analysis?

The gait analysis is free. They just watch you run and see which way your feet land using their camera. I picked up a pair of brooks running shoes suitable exactly for me and my feet for about 110 Euro.

Oi, less of the eye rolling :)

I know that you don't pay extra for it, but the trainers are generally a bit more expensive. It's a great service, if you're a runner, but I just don't think it's absolutely necessary for someone who's just doing aerobics when you could pick up a decent pair of trainers for under 50 quid.

I'd have agreed with you 5 years ago without a shadow of a doubt when I was 21...but not now. Even if you're just doing 5K runs once a week, I'd get a pair of proper trainers for your feet. Good trainers prevent injuries!

    ?

Surely if you're running in a more supportive shoe that prevents your feet from pronation or supination and gives you a more neutral landing - that has to be better right?

Surely if you're running in a shoe that masks and compensates for any imbalances and incorrect technique that you have, you're setting yourself up for a worse injury, right?

Soldiers must be fvcked, they run in boots all the time. They should really get their gait analysed.

I think there is an argument that people probably do over support their feet these days.Alot of people are over pronators, and hence buy shoes to support this problem. In some cases, this does end up affecting normal joint movements, changing gait and as a result people end up with knee or back problems from it instead.
People automatically think that the way to deal with shin splints, plantar fasciitis etc. is to buy a supportive shoe when really there is alot of research that suggests you are better off building up the muscles in your foot, ankle and lower leg as much as possible by wearing a flexible shoe that keeps your foot close to the ground, or if you are more hardcore, running barefoot, or in something like the vibram five fingers:)

There is some yes but nothing conclusive

Absolutely no solid evidence that barefoot or minimalist type shoes are any better at preventing injuries

I think research on barefoot running has a long way to go but initial reports on it are very positive. It has been proven though that barefoot running prevents heel striking, which is a common source of injury for runners. There is solid evidence to support this.

Not running with a heel first strike also prevents heel striking, you dont need barefoot footware to prevent heel strike.

If anything the research at the moment suggest running with a barefoot style but wearing a good pair of runners

Its easy to suggest that heel strike is the cause of injury but for many people who take up running its down to the fact that they are unfit, more than likely carrying extra weight and simply not capable of withstanding the pressure they are putting their body under due to years of inactivity

And they do. The army only provide them with the most basic asics runners so the majority will get fitted for another pair which they will presumably use for most of their training.

Do they train using catapults instead of the guns they use in battle?

If soldiers fight in army boots, why on earth would they train in anything but army boots?

Put Usain Bolt in a pair of army boots and lets see how fast he can run 100m.......

I read somewhere that they use water pistols so that when they shoot each other in training they don't die.

A foot in a well socked foot, in a well-tightened boot is a different monster though, Barry! It's easier to change trainers to suit a gait, than to change a gait to suit trainers.

Depends on the training. If the army issue runners, you can be sure they get used.

By your logic because Usain Bolt races in running spikes he does all his training in them too! Which i can tell you is not the case. Gillick races his 400m's in spikes but has about 50 pairs of runners in his apt.

Its not speculation that people in the army do a lot of their fitness training in runners...its fact! Obviously they will also do a good deal in boots aswell.

Anyway slightly off topic there but to the OP get checked out in a specilist running shop such as those previously mentioned. You wont regret it
