Crack on edge of Macbook

My Macbook is the mid-2007 range. I had heard that they were susceptible to cracks forming on the edge. It is where the lid closes and there is a ridge that rests on the edge.

I've gotten away with it till now. Only noticed the crack tonight when it scratched my wrist. Has anyone here had the problem and had it fixed by Apple?

Would I have to take it to the store in Belfast?

Yeah, the white Macbooks had all sorts of problems relating to cracked enclosures. And Apple did indeed fix it for people, even out of warranty in some cases, but your machine is over 3 and half years old. Unless you have Applecare, I don't think you'll have any luck.

Mine's the same, small slithers of the casing broken away. Doesn't bother me tbh, it's a 3 year old laptop and it looks it.

same as , got it 2007 and is now cracked...

    but shes still going :D

I've seen various mentions of cases on the plastic MacBooks being repaired even when out of warranty, so I'd say it would be worth a try.

If the Belfast Apple store is convenient for you, that might be your best bet - but otherwise, any authorized Apple repair centres, should be able to tell you.

Similar laptop here with a crack, small sliver came off the right hand side where my wrist rests too, but it's no bother for an old laptop considering it works just like new inside.

I have a white MacBook and loads of slivers of plastic have come off the edges by now and she still works perfectly.

They were definitely replacing the enclosures out of warranty but iirc it was only for a limited time...

Thanks bedlam, sugru is pretty neat ( think I'd wait for the white version for Mac repair).

I had the same problem. Strip of Leukosilk medical tape over it and it's practically invisible and not getting any worse.

/edit: also, the texture of that tape is lovely.

I brought it into CompuB yesterday. The person there took one look at it and said that is covered by Apple. She ordered the part and said they will ring when it arrives. Should take no more than an hour to fix.

No charge. Which is great because the Macbook is out of warranty.

Are they replacing the whole case?

Are they replacing the whole case?

I assume that they are. The invoice has a Case Replacement listed.

I left mine in this morning. I should be collecting later. I'll update the post to say how the repair went.

But yes, mine is out of warranty and there is no charge.

They will replace the top case - ie around the keyboard for free outside of warranty. I had a crack around the actual bottom right of the screen on the actual bezel and that wasnt covered.

I collected my repaired Macbook today from CompuB. I have to say that I am very impressed.

I brought it to them a week ago and they ordered the part. I gave them the Macbook yesterday and they had it fixed late yesterday evening. They replaced the case with the crack. I didn't realise it would mean a new keyboard and trackpad. So now the Macbook looks like new.

    It's still going strong anyways!

I remember when I rang Applecare about it a few years ago. The guy on the phone referred to it as 'the crack of doom' so I knew instantly that it was a recognised problem! Pity though, the crack has reapppeared on the replacement cover.

I work as an Apple Service Engineer and I note the comments from the above repairs. however people are not mentioning the replacement bezel surrounding the display, this should be replaced in most repairs. The original macbooks don't qualify. Can people advise if this has been done or are they taking shortcuts. BTW black macbooks also qualify, but not bezels. Also sometimes macbooks older than 3 years qualify for the repair too. I suggest you contact a service provider.

Conor.hogan. FYI bezel cracks are covered in certain models.

They did not replace the bezel surrounding the display for me.

Weird. A friend of mine had a completely different experience with compub http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056062849

Am personally glad you didn't have the same sort of nonsense.

Ugh, I now have "the crack of doom".

Will CompuB do the repair do ye know? Will it be a matter of them getting the cases in and changing them for me in the shop? I can't afford to have my laptop taken off me for a day as I'm nearing my final year assignment deadlines and my exams.

They did the repair for me a couple of weeks ago. They ordered in the parts and phoned me when they arrived. I dropped in my laptop for them to do the repair.

They told me the length of time it takes depends on how busy they are but for this fix it was a full day. I dropped it in at 9am and they rang me at 5.40pm to come and collect.

    Hmmmm.

That's awkward for me with college.

I might be better off going to a mac store in Galway when I'm shopping and can pass time at the cinema or something while it's being repaired rather than leaving it in CompuB in Limerick and not being able to do college work.

I think it can survive another 3 weeks...

Whew! I thought I was the only one with this problem!! :)

Surely you can do it yourself? There's probably a guide on youtube somewhere, I doubt it's too challenging.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,565 ✭✭✭Deep Thought

Just got mine back for Mactivate

    Only took 15mins

Very nice, my problem now is that the bottom chassis is also cracked,

    But Nice Job from Mactivate

I don't think there is any point in risking it. Especially as the service is free.

See if you can schedule the repair so it can be done on the spot, it's a 15-30 minute job at best.

I emailed GalMac in Galway and they said they can do it.

I'll go into CompuB in Limerick on Friday and they might have the casing in for Tuesday and I'll be able to go in and get them to do it if it only takes 30 mins tops...

    Mega bump.

Does anyone know if CompuB etc are still doing this out of warranty?

I heard they are, but why not phone them? What do any of us know for sure?

Be careful of CompuB, they're a joke (in my experience) at basic repairs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,040 ✭✭✭Colonel Panic

    They're hit and miss.

They did a fine job on my MBP recently (although they put the base panel on a bit crooked and I had to reseat it) but they screwed over my sister on a Wifi issue and left her outside of Applecare with no Internet.

The truth is though, this sort of stuff isn't rocket science, it's just getting the parts that's the hard part.

I guess they would fix it. My MacBook was years out of warranty and they did it free for me. They did a great job.
