What do you want from a server?

    what would a server need to keep you playing on it?

    For me it would be:

    Mobs ON - They make the game more fun, fair enough they ruin buildings and kill you but that just makes it more interesting.

    Group projects & Events - seen a few of these and they've been great fun. Huge games of spleef and building competitions etc. Also when a group of people work together on a big building its amazing how fast it goes up.

    No/Limited item spawning - Same as mobs - it makes the game more fun.. I love mining in minecraft, but nay server that i have been on that allowed me to spawn items drained away any fun that mining has because there would be no point to it.

    Mods - Theres some really excellent and useful mods out there. iConomy, Craftbook and mcMMO to name a few. They add so much more to the game and give you so much more to do.

    So what would you like to see on a server?

    I agree with you regarding the mining... I think things like kits of tools should be allowed and masybe basic items/blocks but I like mining too and would prefer if it was a real reward for mining out a mountain and getting a load of red-ore etc.

    I like the idea of Mobs too as well as mining for resources rather than spawning kits with maybe the exception of a "basics" like the diamond tools. I've played enough single player to know how long it takes to get these things and whilst they should be valued, I think the trade off between being able to get busy mining out resources and giant under-cities and going through a hundred stone picks just to get enough iron to go through 20 of them to find diamond and redstone is warranted. :)

    We gad great pvp server idea. Cherry got some more info on that. I wount be repeating myself.

    I think cherry will post up the idea we had.

    I actually would love kits to be removed so we work for our stuff, we can trade materials etc. Anyway cherry should have more info on it if he decides to go that way

    I can imagine it now: "WTT 10 Diamond ore for 100 iron ore PST". Done properly we could almost kick off a mini economy in the same vein as most MMO's.

    I'd go along with the consensus of the thread in any case. While being able to show off what you can do with unlimited obsidian/diamond/gold is fun, actually working towards getting the materials you need in the first place can make it even more worthwhile. Adding in mobs and nighttime would be good too.

    I'd be slightly wary of a pvp server as you'll inevitably end up with the 'was it really necessary to use 20 TNT and obliterate an entire village to kill me?' situations. It would make life interesting having to watch out for traps though.

    I was a bit late into all this talk of 2 servers/not allowing the original to be copied to a Boards/DeV server etc. In fact, I only really knew about it when I got onto the game a while ago and saw the discussion in-game.
    Regardless of all that, I've had a little think about the new server and wanted to throw some ideas out there.

    Seeing as there's some talk about it being single-player writ large, maybe some guidelines/planning should be done before everyone jumps in.

    Firstly, how about a planned town with a bunch of identical houses where people can get immediate shelter/everyone can hang out/trade etc.? It can be as simple as a single-storey, 5x5 house of dirt/cobblestone in a grid pattern around a square. Maybe wall in the settlement and light it up in order to allow safe night-time movement.

    Establish some communal resources where we all contribute a few stacks of stone/dirt/sand in case someone wants to start a big project? Esp. useful if we create links between settlements/bases/want something like the Cathedral.

    Not sure about the story with mines - communal ones could be tetchy!

    Maybe projects/houses outside the settlement should be a certain distance away in order to allow future expansion of the central town?

    I have only began to play Minecraft in the last week, and coincidentally the one thing I want from a server is simply to be new. I had a wander around the old server, and enjoyed taking in the sights, but I also felt a little out of place, the size of the accomplishment you guys had achieved somewhat intimidating! I don't know enough about the specifics of big builds to decide what exactly it is I want, but I am excited that it looks like I'll be able to jump into a new world and hopefully participate in the community and see it begin to build up. I'll have my (iron) tools ready ;)

    In general: To have fun.

    In specific with regards to the new boards.ie server: To be a completely different experience to Tallon's ie. kits and item spawning off, people work for what they get/achieve, mobs on, possibly some abilities like the /sethome command but nothing too fancy.

    I agree with Cherry and the iron tools but maybe there could be a limit to the number of times those kits could be spawned, something like once a day.

    Maybe a basic home starter kit that everyone gets when they first enter the server, x amount of wood, a chest, a workbench and a furnace.

    I loved cossax idea.

    I know I gave idea of pvp server before, but we can do something similar with no pvp.

    One big safe town with plots that can be bought out. So we can do our own cities.

    I really would love community be near each ather and notvspreaded all over the shop.

    I really would love to see mobs on, normal day night cycle. No spowning v
    and working for materials.

    Give basic tools is quite good idea. But I would suggest to give free stone tools not iron. As iron will be useless :(.

    Trust me, when you will get few moments in to game you will have loads of iron. It's not as hard to have stuff then it sounds.

    I think you should definitely have to "earn" the tools.

    If you get diamond tools as a starter kit, it destroys any chance of setting up an economy really.

    I love the idea of a PVP and Survival server. It certainly would make things a lot more intersting and fun

    This sounds like a runner...

    I've only started the single palyer, and it's fun actually crafting :)

    Safe Zones: Before the server goes live, 5 randomly placed safe towns will be built. Spawn point will not be near these
    Economy: Economy will have everyone starting with 100 gold coins to kick start it.
    Shops: Users can set up shops in safe zones (or not if you like to live on the dangerous side!), selling their finds for whatever they desire.
    NPCs: NPCs will be stationed in safe zones, providing users information about the safe zones.
    Quests: If you wish quests can be given out and rewards will be random.
    Kit: A basic iron tool kit can be spawned twice a day.
    Mobs: Are on
    PvP: Undecided yet. Kinda 50/50 here so I have it disabled at the moment
    Guest Preservation/Anti-Grief: All people whitelisted but not added to a second Preservation list can only walk around the server, and do NOTHING ELSE.
    Canals: Might be a bit messy to get sorted but could be part of a group project, linking safe zones together maybe?

    And above all, community involvement and feedback! I'll upload a copy of the world weekly to anyone wanting to muck around on single player.

    If we're only spawning iron kits, I don't think there's any need for the kits TBH.

    Not a fan of PvP.

    Iron kits would come in handy, especially if you are down deep and your current shovel/axe breaks :)

    From playing other multiplayer stuff, cheeky set-events can really make a server. Like a mass zombie rush or a creeper epidemic dropped in the middle of a village or something.

    Post it on the forum, set a time for the event, get a load of guys with swords, smash zombies up.

    I would start with only 2 or 3 randomly placed safe towns and add more as needed

    what can be done with 100 gold coins ? would 100 iron ore be better
    can you buy from NPC what do they do?
    basic iron tool kit - better that people only get the kit 5 or 10 ever.
    (I like the idea of having to think of resupply when your down the mine)
    pvp = no thanks (unless it was only in a set area or else you will just make people move as far away from each other, as they people will start killing them when afk or mining to get all the stuff they have)
    will chests have locks or only open by the person who placed it?
    (on a small server theft with a few m8 it's not a problem but will 50+ people on the Preservation list it could be)

    Gold coins are not found in inventory, rather they're in an invisible one. The idea would be the users determine the economy themselves, set out coins to exchange for items and take it from there.

    NPCs would do nothing, they would be aesthically pleasing in safe zones though. Right clicking them gives you a set text sent to your chat. I had the idea on building a walled area and getting NPC's to look like guards around the walls, and an information centre for new users etc. I may agree with you on the 2/3 safe zones instead of 5 to start off with though.

    We can add a chest lock option no problemo.

    Again PvP seems to be a 50/50 thing, will probably be decided on the last minute.

    Ok, the two times a day iron kit was just an idea. It can be set once a week, once a year, once a day, whenever you like really.

    The preservation list allows users to look around. They cannot interact with anything at all, not even open a door, open a chest, break/build a block.

    Kharn has the idea that spawn is in a safe zone, to help new users get used to the server and what it might actually involve.

    And as for set events, they can be easily set up with the right tools and enthusiasm :)

    Sounds cool.... But I would still be more interested in having proper money. Let's say when we have idea with diamond and gold. As it's something physical. Then for some diamonds you could buy a spot in safe city. There your stuff cannot be touched. But in wilderness you got to hide etc? Secret underground mines with secret entrances?

    And no destroying biulding in wilderness. But you can come inside and look for loot :)

    There can be no pvp. But I presume it's possible to make areas where's pvp on? So we can make in the muddle of safe city a big arena? Again wager matches in it.

    I love economy idea, but I don't like that mod idea. I like something physical.... I better have 5 diamond then some numbers in pocket.

    Scrap the looting idea. It will be pain in the hole withouth pvp. Just no grieving and respect ather property everywhere.

    PVP while fun, will drive people far apart causing a huge map and loads of lag. Maybe if it can be in certain areas, like arenas etc..

    With regards to the spawning of kits - I wonder if there is a mod where you can only spawn a kit when you are in a certain area? This would mean new people could spawn kits, and would also mean people cannot just resupply with a kit when mining. They gotta do it the old fashioned way..

    Using physical stuff vs iConomy gold : if your stuff gets looted you'll lose your money too, at least with iConomy gold you'd still have something to buy with as it cannot be robbed. Also with iConomy -> Auctions. people can auction off whatever they like. This is another possible server event here, build an auction house. and have a big auction now and again. - Could be fun.

    Love the canals idea, we could roof them with glass to protect from mobs too.

    Set Home - I think its a must on a server, when building something tall and you fall off can be annoying, set home will allow people to get back up with no hassle. Also when down mining and the inventory gets filled up. /home to quickly drop off your stuff.

    Craftbook - Bridges, Doors, Gates, Elevators, Cauldrons, Light switches, Redstone integrated circuits, Ammeters & Programmable logic chips. Also loads of minecart features, so it'd be useful for making a railway system.

    Agree with korvanica. Pvp mighty be fun, but it will split community, and nothing is worse then drama on servers.. We all know that.

    I was thinking of.. What if instead of kits toils, you can buy tools wit economy money? Let's say kit diamond pick, you will get diamond pic, but you will pay for it 500 gold.. And you can buy/ use kit only in specific shops.

    We could make some bank shop too where any player could sell for example: 128 glass or stone for 100 gold? you can do this with any material.

    It will give some money in to our own economy.

    As for pvp, we can have special events or even areas for pvp. Devoid us in 2 camps. Each camp builds it's own keep for a week. Then om some weekend we go nuts in castle sieges :)

    Castle sieges are a great idea... :) no obsidian castles though

    Also yea buying tools is a good idea too....

    Here is an iConomy Price Sheet i found... we could use this and add to it... im not 100% on how it works though.. (as in setup etc)

    seems like a good starting point.

    Price lists is cool. But I really don't want to see everyone buying mats from npc shops. I think it's better to have server nps buying and selling mats for ripp off prices. So that people would go there only in beginning to get economy swinging, but after they would look for better deals with ather players.

    I wonder did cherry got some plan now for all this. Would love to hear an update from him ;)

    Btw, if we will have these trading posts up, we wount need to biuld cuties and safe zones. Towns will grow around these trade centres!

    NPCs cannot trade at the moment. They can just interact and give you text lines on the chat bar.

    Also, there may issues with plugin compatibility with one another. iConomy does not work with the NPC plugin, however LocalShops does. So yeah. Plenty of work and user input still to go :)

    If its compatible, BorderGuard could be a useful way of stopping people wandering too far off and making the map unnecessarily large....

    I prefer no PvP personally but if we had to have it, could it be team based, so we could have two teams and a Lost-style us and "the others" ?

    Personally, prefer one big happy family.

    Yeah something like that sounds cool but if it's a straight choice between all pvp or no pvp, I'd go with no pvp.

    This server sounds very cool. Looking forward to being part of it from the start. Is access going to work like on Tallon's server where someone has to be whitelisted for full interaction? If so, will you be deciding that based on Boards membership?
