1) I would have said Metallica for many years, but now I can't honestly answer anything but Devin Townsend.
At times heavy, melodic, funny, stacked full of cultural references, there's few musicans and indeed artists who I feel stack up to the mad professor of metal when you consider the HUGE variation in music he's created, from hardcore to ambient dance to a sci fi musical.
2) Stranger in a Strange land, Robert heinlein. Everyone should read it. It really makes you think. It does kinda hit you over the head with it's metaphors though.

I've enough vampire time under my belt to accept them for what they are- another attemt at being clever and original which simply redoes what other people did before (daylight vampires!!!). Vampires are kinda done to death.
