I was chatting to a Taxi Driver today, he drives an S class and reckons he has quadrupled his earnings since he went from an Octavia to the S. He has hotels ringing him all the time and gets a lot of corporate work. I know you're a fan the Mercs so it's worth seriously considering one. A decent '02 could be had for handy money

Just inspect the S carefully VB - I painted a bumper on one 2 weeks ago, and I was really surprised by the amount of rust on it for a 01 car. You'll get a 02 now for handy money though, so +1 if it's a good'un.

but i still like it, seen one going past 250k miles before as a taxi so they must be a good goer

The problem with the s-class is that they can be expensive to maintain properly...something which I have never seen a taxi driver do...

I wasn't suggesting for a moment that VB wouldn't maintain it, I am saying that it would be very hard to make such a good living if you were having an s class maintained to mercedes standards.

Most s-class taxi's that I see in(and non taxi's for that matter) are in bits with brake disks badly worn(they need to be changed with almost every second/third set of pads and are not cheap), numerous system faults which can be very pricy to repair so are usually just deactivated amongst other problems

I'd love one, but they are very troublesome. They rust to beat the band, electric glitches, seen a good few of them on the ground when the air-matic collapses. Even the diesel alternative is poor injectors have a habit of 'welding' themselves to the block on the 320 CDi. Toyota seems the way to go. :)

Really don't see the point in getting this when you already have an '03 Avensis. It may be slightly higher spec and have auto but I still don't see how a case could be made for it.

That 04 has low mileage the 03 has something like a zillion miles on it..

It's a well maintained car though and might possibly be in better mechanical order than your average example.

Did you not buy that Lexus GS VB? sorry...I lose track:)

You're a Toyota-fan, Lexus might help get corporate work and will be wayyyy more reliable than a Merc of that vintage? Would the hybrid make sense for city/taxi work?

This would be ideal if some chav hadn't been let near it:

Would ya belive they cannot be used for a taxi as the boot is too small. The batterys encrouch on the boot space, the petrol GS300 is fine tho.

Just remember if you are getting a nice car to use as a taxi it will probably have to do the Saturday night shift too. Plenty of jealous types out there who will think nothing of damaging your motor in the wee hours of the night as they sit in the back seat.
I know someone that purchased a nice car, well specced with cream leather, etc. The car is constantly the source of attacks & damage. The corporate work for independent operators is all but dried up.
Best of luck with what ever you buy VB, I presume you are purhasing with the 9 year rule in mind? In that case woudl a l2002 S Cloass really be a runner?

A few things are not right with that. The wing mirrors are off an older pre-facelift model and the wheels are off an S60.

A dealer of the same name as the above was up for clocking cars a few years ago as well.

Friend of mine just bought an estate and I have a saloon Legacy. Both diesel but that's beside the point...

Thing is they're quite low-slung for this type of car and you'll have a pain in your arse seeing passangers slam the door HOLDING THE FRAMELESS WINDOW......grrrr...

Sonata would make sense but...pretty dull...an S60 would be high on my list (prefer proportions to S80)

I admit it's not in the same league as most mentioned (and arguably not as reliable) but what about a Superb 2.5tdi. Spec would match most mentioned as they were all only sold in the upper trim levels and can be had for small enough money. I wouldn't pick one straight out but I'd give a good example serious consideration. It's a good car for the type of work.

I'D agree. Plus those A6s don't handle the miles as well as a 5 series too.

Top of the range, auto. Good price, thoughts??

Avensis 2.0 petrols have direct injection, and direct injection petrol engines really do not like being driven around town all the time - if you do (and let's face it, you're gonna use it as a taxi) then you'll find it will suffer from carbon build up after not too long.

If you must have another Avensis, get a 1.8 Luna Auto.

The 1.6 and 1.8 models have perfectly conventional indirect injection, so will work perfectly around town forever, or at least until they start burning oil anyway:)!

They fall short on head and shoulder room. The V70 is eligible though because it is a longer platform and does not have the sloping roofline of the S60.

You're obviously unaware the S80 has a special snow program in the auto tranny. And it works very well! You don't need 4WD in Dublin, really. If you're afraid the weather is gonna bite you again next winter, get some winter tyres...
