Would we not be better off if we were are filling in gallons at the pumps. Wouldn't we get more filling up or would it be cheaper

How would you get more? 4.54 litres in a gallon, sell petrol in pints, litres or gallons and you won't get more or less, a tank full is a tank full

You would have to be a yank then. It would cost you more at the drive thru because you would eat 4 quarter pounders...;)

Yeah because 20 euros worth of petrol measured in gallons is more than 20 euros worth of petrol measured in litres????!!!

    WTF?:pac:

which is heavier a tonne of feathers or a tonne of rocks ?

For the love of jesus !

Why do people check prices at petrol stations?

Sure 20 euros of petrol will cost you the same at every station :pac:

Because you'll get more for your 20 if the petrol in one station is cheaper then the petrol in another.

Like an analogy to pints and 0.5 litres.
You go to the bar in Ireland, to get a nice pint.
If you go to the bar on the Continent, you just get 0.5 litre.
Nine beers in Ireland is more then 10 beers on the Continent.
Probably that was the reason why op started thinking that gallons are better than litres ;)

If we are filling up at the pump, we get more filling up, if we are filling up away from the pump, we are just getting less filling up, and petrol soaked shoes:D

I don't drink so how could I be drunk.

what i'm trying too say is isn't a gallon bigger than a litre. so would it not cost less filling in gallons than litres with the way prices are.

    I could be wrong.

theres 3.79 liters in a gallon and a litre is 1.50 give or take at moment.

Well if there was that many litres in a gallon, it would be €1.50 a litre, or
    1.5 x 3.79 = €5.69 a gallon.

There is about 4.54 litres in a gallon here, but the same applies. You must be having a laugh or something.

I don't know are you being serious or not cena, but if there are 3.79 L in a gallon then the price of petrol would increase x 3.79 per unit if you changed the units measured to gallons. I'm after about 8 cans at this stage so drink isn't to blame! If your just having a bit of a block about it then fair enough... A commodity is worth what it's worth it doesn't matter what units you measure it in.

only asked a question. I don't care if you drink or not. I never said drink had anything too with the question

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 279 ✭✭Bumpstop

hmm 8 cans is that 2 gallons ?:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,029 ✭✭✭shedweller

Would that be american gallons or uk gallons. This kind of thing matters!! lol.
As augustus said, "epic mathematics fail"

    Ok so. 50 litre tank x €1.50 = €75

    4.54 litres in a gallon, gallon = 4.54 x €1.50 = €6.81

    50 litres/4.54 = 11.013 gallons to fill tank

    11.013 x €6.81=€75

Thank god we don't use gallons if for no other reason then the confusion over US and Imperial.

4.54 litres and 3.79 litres are both on this thread and both valid

Ah no, fair enough. But you did know that gallons were bigger than litres, didn't you? Plus, there's american gallons, but they are still bigger than litres!

Ya I know gallons American are bigger than litres

If anything, we're doing better than gallon users. We get 45.4 litres for the same price they have to pay for only 10 gallons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭shawnee

If the price keeps going the way it is , well soon be buying it in spoonfulls. Filled a milk carton the other day for my lawnmower and it cost me three euro...

ah but was that a litre milk bottle or a pint one? surely three euro of petrol would be more in a pint bottle., or is that only true for milk?

OP amybe you can find the answer here http://www.mensa.ie/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭shawnee

It was still a milk carton !!:p (easy to calculate the size of it , no need for mensa)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,902 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

Which would get you drunk quicker OP?

    8 x 500ml cans of beer or
    4 x 1 litre bottles of beer

think about it, think about it, think about it,

    *penny dropping*

    there you go...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

ah but if they sold beer in gallons..they are BIG!

Theres another fail. I worked in a filling station part-time when going to college. It was hammered into the guys working in the forecourt to the nth degree not to allow petrol to be put into containers other than them designed to carry as such. That was over 7 years ago, I'd imagine with these sort of issues that things have only tightened up since.

milk will not do your lawn mower any good at all...
