Exactly. It's absolutely different when something is on the line

cavan have three nice away games, meath , westmeath and roscommon, id say thats the first time they got three almost neighbouring counties as the three away games, navan and mullingar both 1 hr from cavan town and surely roscommon town isnt much more than 80 mins away from cavan town? bookies have both Meath counties to be favs for relegated, just ahead of down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 473 ✭✭mylestheslasher

They are all away games for me!

I wouldnt heed the bookies, the league takes a life of its own once it starts and a team who trains hard early and targets the league can often get enough early points to keep them up. We need to target 2 wins from the 1st two games as our last 2 are the toughest.

No easy games there. They are all coin toss games. Win the first two and we'll be planning a weekend in Killarney next year, lose and we'll be talking about a day trip to Sligo 😁.

Monaghan at home first up is ideal for us. There's no chance it will be a limp encounter, and we have a good record against them. Meath are no great shakes and we have a good record there and we definitely owe them for the totally limp display we put in against them in Breffni this year.

After that, who knows? Cork are very hit and miss and we have a good record against them but would prefer to get them early before they start waking up (they usually put a good run in towards the All Ireland).

Am delighted we are at home to Louth, who I would fancy to get promoted. They are definitely on an upward trajectory, but mainly because I don't want to have to go to Ardee for an intercounty game again. Sorry Ardee!!!

I was absolutely fuming after the Fermanagh game, as I had driven down from Dublin to witness our lads treat it like a challenge game (not disimilar to the match in Breffni the previous year). I was very fearful that our form had fallen off a cliff (pedestrian against Meath and lucky to salvage a draw, dismantled by Armagh who were a million times better- yes, in hindsight…) and then to surrender to Fermanagh, I figured we would be beat out the gate by Monaghan.

So, sometimes not showing your hand isn't a bad thing. Most intercounty teams have off days simply because the drive to win isn't always there (already safe or relegated) and that has always been the case. Not unique to Cavan.

McManus and Darren Hughes are giving it another year with Monaghan. Karl O Connell will probaly continue also. He's a year younger at 36.

They are one County who gets every player going as long as possible, Dessie Mone, Vinny Corey, Clerkin were other examples.

I like yourself live far away from Cavan now unfortunately. Every game an away game to me too unless they are away to where I live which is very rare. I was annoyed too at this. But like last year, we turned it over in the League final, and this year we beat Monaghan. So I'd take those turnarounds any day if the last day of the League means not as much

In fairness I had expected Cavan to start losing players now and we’re not doing too bad ourselves at holding onto lads. I had been told Killian Clarke wouldn’t be back this year but that news appears similar to when I was told he was off to the Gaels as I see he’s in the picture for the new kit.

Doing ok yeah. Clarke would be 6 years younger than McManus and Hughes, but around a good while at 31. Debut in 2012

Cian Mackey probably had another year or 2 in him when he retired at 32. Though he was brought into the panel at 18 under keoghan, so had probably had enough of the commitment.

Mackey walked away because the team started training in November and he wanted a break until January and Mickey wasn’t for moving.

Sometimes they stay too long and when they are picked to play it sends a bad signal to up and coming players. Not always a good thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,349 ✭✭✭rrs

Yeah that's true too. It looked like McManus would step away when his clubmate Vinny Corey stepped down as manager.

The 2 points for scoring a 45 should have been done away with. It should only be 1 point imo. Was it even discussed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭tazman06

Was that even put forward? Thought the rules committee took it away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54,412 ✭✭✭✭tayto lover

I didn't hear that it was taken away. It shouldn't have been imo.

2 point for the 45 and 4 pointer weren't par

Yeah it and 4 pointer didn't go to congress.

Be interesting to see how the stop clock is implemented at club level. Will the gaa being providing funding for clubs?

It looked too much to be asking. It wasn't really clarified by the journalists.

Gowna won the U20 championship for the second year in a row against Gowna. I think it was a better championship when it was knockout at U21. it seemed to have more neutral interest. Everything is group based including reserve championship

on a given day teams ranked 7-20 can turn each other over in league. id expect cavan to be hunt for promotion with roscommon and cork, i dont know about louth i think they may have peaked over the last few years, they barely stayed in the division last year it came down to last game with kildare, meath fans were delighted with their display in breffni, i know meath always chalk down an away game to cavan as a defeat after all its 1964 since they beat cavan in breffni. meath in navan is different its a very 50-50 record there. cavan v westmeath is a tasty rivalry the last few years since tailteann cup

Had he not switched to Leitrim and was their goalie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,349 ✭✭✭rrs

A couple of times he has switched back. He was on a training panel under Mickey Graham after playing a few years with Leitrim. I presume he's back as a keeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 207 ✭✭mogue77

seems to have switched back, they had it on WAC.

Against Ramor. You’d wonder again what Lacken have gained from amalgamating for years as Southern Gaels.
I hear that Kill/Drung from next year’s U14 team are dropping this ridiculous move where two clubs, each with enough players to field their own team, amalgamate and sometimes enter two teams.
In the long run, it doesn’t generally work out for either team. All you do is lose players when the clubs hide behind this facade that it gives everyone football.
