I was out with a few mates for some pints tonight. The usually pub chat was had. However the question came up as to where/what is the oldest pub in Ireland. A few places around the country were mentioned but I think that was just lads making wild guesses. So does anyone actually know?

always thought it was the Brazen head (oldest licensed establishment anyway)

seans bar seems to have been the oldest (athlone) dating from 900AD but it turns out its a hoax:

The Brazen Head in Dublin is I think pretty much officially considered it, but there are claims that The Gateway (now An Réalt Dearg) in Cork is the actual one.

Definitly the brazen head... I actually think that that's part of their slogan "oldest pub in Ireland", or something to that affect. I suspect it's to lure the "Irish" Americans in the door!

They do serve nice pints tho!

Sweeney's White Horse Bar in Ballyshannon Co.Donegal also claims to be Ireland's oldest pub.

Pretty certain the Brazen Head is Dublin's oldest pub. Not sure if it's the oldest pub in Ireland though.

Not sure how long it's been operating as a pub, but the Kytler's Inn in Kilkenny dates itself to the 13th century. And it feels olderthan the Brazen Head and the like.

    /Facepalm

    That article is fake...

A few years ago the owners of the brazen head and the owners of means bar were both on the gerry ryan (I think) show one morning having a back and forth making their case and the owners of the brazen head were forced to admit that Sean's Bar was the older of the two.

The wattle and mud on the wall is legit, it was studied by the national history museum when it was found and the certification from The Guinness Book of World Records awarded.

    Sean's is the winner.

So I raided a few traveler halting sites for broken bits of machinery and fishing rods and bits of ****e to stick up and had the place gutted and re-done in 1990 to look like an old Irish pub. Some of the lads got a bit enthusiastic, I had to convince them that urinating on the walls to give it that “old Irish pub” atmosphere was out of the question. In any case, during the renovations the oxygen tank with Woody Harrelson’s face on it blew up there – so we just turned it into the fireplace.

So we have a pub in Roscommon which is possibly the oldest in Europe (as claimed by many experts) and yet the Dubs still try to claim that they have the oldest pub in Ireland! Typical Dublin arrogance

I care! My home address is on that side of town, I don't want to be associated either those dirty rossies!

The Westmeath county boundary goes across the river as far as shines pub in baylough, ganleys hardware on the common road and about halfway out to Clonoon (spelled way wrong) out the bog road.

If you ever played a football match against St. Peters FC you'd see where the boundry is because halfway out the road from the railway bridge the road becomes unpaved where Westmeath C.C. Stopped and roscommon C.C. Never bothered to continue.

    Well, you're just wrong.

my mum lives on the connacht side of town and when I lived there I was registered in Longford/Westmeath for elections. I voted in Westmeath in the locals. Westmeath C.C. Do all the works in the area and our address is Westmeath. As is the address of the 3 primary and secondary school around connacht street.
As per my earlier post, the roscommon county boundry starts further across the river.

Sorry Seaneh but i live in Offaly - my house is 5 miles from the Tipp border - i voted in the North Tipp constituancy and the Tipperary CoCo. come out to grit sometimes so it proves nothing!!:D

I live within 10 miles of the area. This was something that was discussed many times when I was in school. While in recent times (the last 100-200 years) postal addesses have recognised this area as Westmeath, prior to this the Shannon WAS the division between Connacht and Leinster, Roscommon and Westmeath. And who we to argue with 20,000 year old history.

Westmeath county boundry comes across the river, you can check any map, even google maps. The library beside the church was a Westmeath county library. The address of every house between the bridge and shines pub and ganleys hardware is Westmeath. I know this for fact, I'm from the area!

I haven't been in there in about 4 or 5 months but they had the saw dust on the ground back then, it does add to that old feel of the place.
