The date doe snot suit me this year, so can't do it. It does not suit my swim training at the moment.

The organizer is a really nice guy.

    Seb

Yup. Should be a good day out. Will be interesting to see what the weather is like this year , it being held earlier.
Also interesting to see how it works out with the faster 12 hour and relay events on at the same time. I hope there wont be a scrum at the inner two lanes to get over the mat :D

Last i heard there was only 2 entered for the 12 hour finn and 1 relay team so if pick up dosnt improve i dont know if they will have them to be honest.

Oisin, I am signed up but very doubtful I will make the start line. Gutted by my stupidity. I will definitely go anyway to cheer you all on and crew for you guys.
Did you send your Biog to Ed?

That wouldn't be hard, it is the only 24hr race at the moment, so who ever wins get bragging rights. :-)

    Woohoo! Sign up people

How does a race like this work in relation to food & toilet breaks? Can you stop when ever you want, or are there scheduled stops etc?

Is there a 'pit lane' where you pull in and stop to refuel / offload / whatever the case may be?

You can stop as often as you want, but the clock keeps on ticking.

Big embarrasssement for me. Local news paper has banner headline in sports section with article on my "brave attempt to cover 100 miles in a 24 hour race in Belfast.... ". Bugger. Pity the journalist didnt contact me first. Its embarrassing for people to say it to me while still limping around the town.:o

Just got the info email on this today. I see there is porridge being served up in the mornings. Did they do pizza in the evening last year, or am I just wishful thinking? What happens during the nighttime, is there anything to keep you going? like music and stuff, or do you just keep doing around and around praying to see the dawn?

There is a 12 minute long video on utube eamonn. I could hear music playing in the back ground all the time. I heard someone mention bacon sandwhiches also:P

There is music all the time. Pretty good too. The volume is a bit lower during the wee small hours.
Eddie Gallen , Irish team member and amazing ultra athlete ordered two or three giant pizzas last year. HIs brother has a pizza restaurant on the Ormeau road.
IN the morning there is a big cauldron of hot porridge. Around lunchtime there was a kind of mini barbecue with bacon butties ( to provide salt of course). One of the sponsors was an icecream company so in the afternoon when the sun came out strong there was as much free icecream as you wanted. Dont think the video features us horsing into tubs of the stuff. It was yum.
Apart from that there were tables with bananas, energy bars, drinks, mars bars, go ahead biscuits ( I had tons of these) and of course water.
At one point of the track where the timer mat is positioned ,the computer monitoring the distances etc, the massage tent, the visual lap counter people are sat, the toilets , and the entry /exit point off the track as well as the turnaround points are all together. The grub table is about 10 yards past this.

Runners stay on the inner lane. If you need or want a walk break you are asked as courtesy to step into the second one to give the runners coming through a chance. Only the two inner lanes are electronically tagged. Last year in the afternoon , a few runners had friends or family walking with them on the outer lanes for company. It wasnt frowned upon but wouldnt have been great if there had been many doing this.
Tents and personal tables are directly ringside and tents are within a stagger of this. There were also two camper vans just outside the outer lane. Cars are parked just outside the perimeter of the track. The club house is just past the carpark and has hot showers , real toilets and kitchen facilities. If you even think about venturing up to it at any point I will drag you mercilessly back onto the track and give you a serious talking to .!!!!

Hopefully we'll all be still moving at this time next week and getting our 3rd or 4th wind.
The trick now is just to keep what you've got by doing just enough but not too much that you start the race tired.
The training for this race was done over the last few weeks / months / years so my advice is take it easy next week and then let it happen.

    John

just ready for the off. Over 40 runners doing the 24hrs including John Oreagan and eddie gallen from the irish team. The nordic 24 hour treadmill record holder is also here along with a pair of hungarian internationals. Nice weather and everyone is keen for the off. Bit of banter between ultraman and oisin about who will go further

Keep us informed as to progress Meno! Tell the two lads I'll stand five pints after DM to whichever of them goes the furthest tonight. Best of luck to them all!

1.5 hours in. Leaders on about 16k. Oisin, Aimman and Ultraman all about 15k though oisin has just lapped ultraman for the first time and is closing in on aimman.

I know this is probably very silly but I am enthralled by this event. I have only ran one marathon but this 24 hour event is something I dream of doing someday. Cant wait to hear how its going for everyone.

3 hours in and the leader is Michael Cunningham from Bilboa AC on 35.8k, followed by Sean Burke on 34.8k.
    Other Notables:
    John O regan (6th) 32.4k
    Thomas Maguire (8th) 32k
    Eddie Gallen (11th) 31.6k
    Oisin 11178 (17th) 30.4k
    Aimman (22nd) 29.2k
    Ultraman 1 (25th) 28.8k

    All looking very comfortable.
I have just been informed by the chip timing company that Live lap by lap updates can be found here:

the lads had their first bit of craic for the night and changed direction! All still looking strong and have yet to take any significant pitstops. Boardsies picking up spots just by staying on the track!

Keep her lit all. Am cycling tomorrow so will probably not be up to date during the day but will catch the last few hours!

The guy in the lead is doing an interesting strategy. All the boardies seem to be doing consistently paced laps, the leader did 50 odd very even paced laps, then started going a minute a lap quicker but looks like he's then walking every tenth lap approximately.

Just slowed the average pace down again over the last few laps.

Edit: Just spotted that the person in 1st isn't actually a person, it's a team.

ignore the front runner. It's a relay team. Leader still michael cunningham but john oregan has clawed 4 or 5 laps in the last hour and looking fresh as a daisy! Should be leading in the next hour or so. Oisin is closing in on eddie gallan who has just had pizzas delivered down to the track!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,915 ✭✭✭✭menoscemo

Oisin is performing heroics now. Just overtook eddie gallen for 6th place and just a minute behind thomas maguire who is running 5th. Aimman has just broke into the top 10 of the main race.

oisin up to third after 7 hours. He has yet to stop for even a minute.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,915 ✭✭✭✭menoscemo

quick update before i grab a few hours sleep. Oisin11178 cleared 50 miles in 8 hours and stopped for half an hours rest and a massage. Back going now but he has dropped back a bit. Aimman just behind and going solid. Ultraman1 has been having stomach problems all race but is still chugging away. When I left, John O regan was in the lead and looking strong with thomas maguire chasing just a few laps behind. That is set up for a great battle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,915 ✭✭✭✭menoscemo

Just back at the track. Most of the lads have cleared 100k overnight and are well on track for 100 miles. The magic target is 403 laps. John O reagan well in the lead and looks like he is just out on a 5k morning jog.
