The New Canteen Needs A Name

Just got this email.

Dear All

We are inviting all students and staff to help us come up with a name for the new restaurant on the north campus – due to open on April 26th 2011.

The restaurant will have a seating capacity for approximately 500 people over two floors and includes a large paved plaza between the sports hall and the common room which will incorporate a band stand.

If you have a great idea for the name of the restaurant, we’d love to hear it - please email ciara.farrelly@nuim.ie by Tue March 1st 2011.

Seen a few pictures of the canteen, it looks really pretty! There's a video tour of it on the Student Observer as well.

Perhaps name it after Professor Tom Kelly, he was head of the Philosophy department up until he died tragically in 2008.

He had been teaching in Maynooth for a very long time, was a really familiar face around campus and was very accessible. He was also a fantastic and very engaging lecturer.

Seen it today too. Niteclub style font on it too. I'm confused as the why it's not just called the NUIM restaurant? Why does it even need a name??

Don't think that's a 'regular' font, if you know what I mean. As in not actually designed for text or display. There's a certain amount of continuity of style between the letters, but look at how much narrower the E is than the O... it's an odd one. Can't put my finger on it at all.

Personally I'd have gone with one of these, all sans-serif (no curls at the end of letters like in, say, Times New Roman), and all designed for display. (They look much better in real life, and when not done in 5 minutes :pac:)



I'd probably pick Gotham, originally commissioned for GQ Magazine and used in the original Obama 08' Campaign.



Since then it's become a very popular display typeface, used in everything from theatre:



To action flicks:



But, as long as they serve food that's cheap and tasty I'll get over my nerd rant. Also, working against that kind of dark brown, a light-ish neon green is the only colour that'll make a light sans-serif be visible from any distance, so I'm actually fine with that part.

(Also, one reason I like Chill so much is that they use Myriad Pro, the Apple font, in their menus :pac:)
