I was a little shocked at their holding on to the exit poll results until saturday morning.

But I've been watching rte one's coverage of the results all day today and have really been enjoying it. I think they've done a really good job with barely a slip.

    First rate.

I was a little worried they were going to pack up for the night but it looks like they'll keep going as long as counting continues.

I think they have done really well. Very comprehensive view of the election all day. Enjoying it since early this morning.

In fact I'm a little embarrarsed that I am enjoying RTE for once :o

Radio coverage is fantastic I think.

Very good. I was alternating between TV and radio, I think the radio was better than TV on quality of analysis. TV was good though, great to see John Bowman back.

The only thing I did not like were their graphics which looked clunky and old fashioned to me. But that's a minor quibble.

They are killing TV3 anyway.Vincent Browne was very disappointing tonight.

    Great job by RTE

Looks like its doing well except a little technical blip during the last Clare count where it seemed to splice into different visual before getting cut off!

Very good but very little coverage of East Cork even though it promised to be one of the more exciting counts of the election.

First rate coverage, both on radio and tv. The poor presenters and background staff must be so tired for now - fair play to them for soldiering on!

I'd also like to thank the people who put together the election section on the rte website. It's really well made and very easy to find who's elected and who's not; with nice swing and pie charts. Fantastic job imo!

Its great, and the website is a fantastic resource too. It wasn't updated quite fast enough earlier today but its bang on now.

I didn't even think to check tv3, to what extent are they covering it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,900 ✭✭✭InTheTrees

I've been watching online the whole time. First rate. A couple of pauses every now and again but no complaints.

Very good, but get rid of the serial interrupter guests (Nora Owen, Peter Matthews - think he was on last night), and them that just don't shut up - Roisin Shortall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

Good coverage. One thing you can't accuse RTE of is not taking the counting of General Elections seriously.

Good coverage but I`d love to see a FOI on how much it cost us!

RTE folk pay themselves too much I dread the overtime bill!

yeah have to say that I've been impressed with rte on this tonight even online with the live stream, though it's getting a bit laggy here for me (and I use online streamings on regular basis).

Presenters and everyone involved have actually done better, I'm sure they must be wrecked at this late stage. But great to have access to so much information with great updates on their site, and even better with boardsies (for the company too) :)

    +1

I've got rte and boards.ie open.

Perfect combo. I've been able to ask some questions on boards so its been great.

    same as :)

have to say, Brian Dobson might need a much earned rest. I've been watching him grill TDs on 6.01 over the weeks, great to see he's able to still grill but also enjoy it too. Can't imagine with getting info from all over the shop how it is, but I think they've done better than most 24/7 news networks with keeping the ball running. Some info has been slow in coming live, but quick on other media platforms.

My brain is getting tired though from this information over load, but it's feeding my brain :)

anyone who enjoys it is obviously from dublin, never seen a more biased crowd, ffs there's some really exciting counts around the country and no mention!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,900 ✭✭✭InTheTrees

    Hmmm

Looks like they've shut up shop and headed home!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,920 ✭✭✭Einhard

It's very good, but they are concentrating a bit too much on a few constiuencies. Haven't seen Carlow-Kilkenny mentioned yet.

Vincent Brown was really poor tonight. He doesn't really seem to know what to do unless he's tearing into someone. Serious, balanced analysis isn't really his forte. By the by, anyone else think Garrett Fitzgerald is getting a bit doddery? Vincent seemed more like his care worker than anything else!

EDIT: Wonder is there anything politically subliminal about the next prgramme on RTE's schedule- New Leaf?!:P

haven't been watching the tv, but the web site is very impressive, particularly the stats break down. I know this stuff isn't that difficult to do if you know what you are doing, but still RTE had to prioritize the web and they have, which I think is rather forward thinking for an organization not that well know for that type of stuff. It is really great to see RTE embrace new tech in the last 2 or so years, and this is another example of that.

Very impressed with RTE all day.

I think I will actually send an email congragulating them rather than the usual ones I send haranguing them...

yeah but if you go to the website, you'll find a wealth of information by each constituency that are actually still counting (annoyed that Galway West gave up so early in the evening).

btw Cork born (cork south central and would have not voted MM), Galway living, but from the shambles I saw with Vincent Browne and a rather bewildered Garret Fitzgerald I decided not to bother with TV3.

oh and the irish times and the independent and many other papers will have extensive information and coverage with analysis for you to digest online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,435 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

RTE coverage has been top notch. I like Vincent Brown but never got a chance to watch him today because of the quality of the coverage from the national broadcaster. A big thumbs up to them from me.

Rte were top notch today with their coverage.

I switched over to vincent for a little and he was reading their prediction of seats on a per constituency per party basis it was the most cringeworthy fifteen minutes ive ever seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭christmas2010

    Enjoyed the coverage too.
Had a laugh counting how many times Brian Dobson took his glasses off.

Exactly classic case was Waterford which was very close and went on all night, barely a mention and little or no footage I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,962 ✭✭✭✭dark crystal

Have to say, if you lived in Dublin, the coverage was great.

However, if you lived in the Midlands, North or South East, it was abysmal.

Watching RTE all day and the Waterford count centre featured once. Had to get all my info from the guys at the count centre on the Waterford election thread here on Boards.

Turned out to be a nail biting finish here and RTE barely mentioned it. First time we've not had a FF TD here for many, many years, but RTE seemed intent on reguritating the same updates from Dublin count centres over and over again ad infintum.

Hopeless coverage in Waterford. Fascinating count and RTE didn't show any of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,866 ✭✭✭Panrich

They covered the detail well but we didn't see much predictive analysis on final numbers. TV3 for all their faults had a projection onscreen from early afternoon. RTE were still talking about forty something seats for Labour hours after TV3 had them pegged in the 30s. Good stamina from the reporters and presenters though to keep the drama going through the night.

Agree with people about the coverage. Good in parts but the decision to ignore Waterford and Kerry South (the Bull was in big trouble from a while out) were odd. Waterford was a huge change and the way things could goin Kerry were quite interesting.

When they said that Labour were a Leinster focused party, i pointed out to the telly and the cat that so were RTE.

Have to say Excellent all round, in particular the RADIO 1 coverage including excellent live streaming video throughout the day on Sat.

The only thing that irritated me was Brian Dobsons Glasses, WTF does he not consider contact lenses, he spent the entire day/night putting on and removing his specs, no doubt he had a bad elbow by the end of the day.

TV3's coverage, what can i say apart from it being typically dreadful. Cranky Cantwell was clearly pissed off at having to work the weekend, Sarah Carey "who the **** is she and what the **** does she know about politics. Vincent Browne was good but clearly suffering from the lack of resources at TV3. One redeeming factor was Gerome Hughes finally washed and brushed his hair.

Hats of the RTE on this one!

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

I was flicking back and forth between the radio and tv all day yesterday right up until the end, and I thought RTE's coverage was excellent. I switched over to TV3 and Vincent a few times and switched right back. Good to hear o'Rourke and English back this morning as well. Some good analysis on the radio, where as the tv coverage contained a bit too many interviews/acceptance speeches with elected candidates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭stuckin

Well when you consider that TV3 were simply rehashing RTE news its hardly surprising RTE were better

I took this picture at the RDS count centre, showing that TV3's Ursula Halligan was on the RTE website before going on the air probably to discuss whatever she had seen there

just another mention, the galway east vote, there were 2 votes seperating 5th and 6th and there was a recount, not a mention of it. (4 seats)

    can't believe this!

After the 4th recount in Galway east Tom McHugh is heard to have taken the lead over Tim broderick, really exciting and no mention of it!

Ballot papers being found and everything.

The TV coverage has been very Dublin-centric. If it wasn't for the excellent breakdown of info on the RTE website (and updates from the OH in the count-room) I wouldn't have known there was anything going on here in Clare at all. This pattern was repeated in other parts of the country also. Shocking, really.

Too many lame-ish Oscar-acceptance-type monologues, too.

All that said, it was fascinating stuff and the constant rotation of analysts and candidates kept it fresh for the duration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭Scuba Ste

I don't think you can blame anyone looking at the RTE site it's the best source of info on the counts.

RTE coverage has been fairly good but Richard Crowley is awful imo. Nothing positive to contribute and seems to just moan at anyone he interviews asking the same questions again and again. Maybe he's a FFer.

I am a huge critic of how Dublin-centric RTÉ can be, but this time round, I think they're doing a great job and balancing the country out brilliantly as regards coverage.

These regions combined, which make up huge swathes of the country (give or take 15 counties), have the same amount of constituencies as Dublin does, just one county. One county vs. 15 counties will make it seem very unbalanced, but we're talking constituencies here. In my opinion, they are doing a very balanced programme when you compare one constituency with another, rather than county with county.

Crowely annihilated Brian Lenihan on the radio before Christmas. Irish politicians sometimes have to be asked the same question over and over again because they have a tendency to ignore the question and start waffling about something else. Far too many RTE presenters let them away with this.

Richard Crowley is my favourite of all the RTE presenters. I think he's an excellent interviewer: extremely to the point and no nonsense.
