If petrol was going to go up 3 cent at midnight, would you go out to fill up to save the once off €1.50 just because of that, or not bother filling until you were going to anyway the next day.

Depending on the current level in the tank, I would probably fill up as I would be out driving anyhow.

Its going a bit mad alright. 2 euro a litre not too far off the way its going.
I would`t go out myself to save the once off saving though. Unless i was out driving anyway.

Maybe BBDBB is right, time for some horses.

I dont understand why people do this, especially on budjet day etc. Just fill up while your passing. Most people would spend that €1.50 and more on petrol driving to and from the garage in the first place. Seriously WTF

It will keep going up as long as there is tension within North Africa.
Should the protests head over to the Middle East, expect to see me risking my life on one of those bus things!

    I was being facetious:o

but as someone who had to get rid of the Kia Sorrento cos it just got too damned expensive, it is galling to see the prices just go up and up

they have us by the balls and they know it, we squeal a bit with each hike, but in a week we simply get used to that new price

best thing I did was calm myself a bit as a driver, boring I know, but it was astonishing how many more miles I seemed to get when I just eased up on the accelerator, less stress too :)

When ye put €20 in the car, it seems to do very little mileage. I would say the prices are going more or less one way now.

Around 90 cent a litre going to the government in taxation, there's where the problem is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,731 ✭✭✭Bullseye1

I believe prices eased on SAs commitment to pump out more oil. The world economy is likely to slow down if oil continues to rise so it's not in Antibes interest.

    already 150.9 in Tesco Finglas.

It was 79 cent a litre there in finglas when they first started selling it in 2004, and 74 cent when you spent €20 in tesco.

Most of the increase is down to government taxes.

Your probably right there, a lot seem to have been duty increases alright. But a price of a barrel of oil increase has its associated duty increase automatically anyway.

They will have to review it or it will kill (the near dead) country. That in itself will take weeks with the new government.

It was 141 in Dublin for diesel when I left last night and I got it for 137 in Mayo. That doesn't make sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 515 ✭✭✭Supraman

141.9 for petrol in Cork in the station near the guards in Anglesea street.

Why doesn't it make sense ?

Every single industry has different companies selling at different prices.

Can of coke is €1 in one shop, 90c in another. Electricity is one price with the ESB, another with bord gas and yet another with Airtricity. A 8oz fillet steak with fries is €20 in one resturant, €30 in the one next door.

It's up to the buyers to vote with their feet and buy where they perceive value, if no one buys off the dear guy he'll soon realise and have to price his fuel more realistically in the Market

there's also loads of other trade related reasons why one garage can be anything up to 6 or 7 cents dearer than the garage next door. And the guy who is cheaper can quite easily actually be making more profit on his fuel than the dearer guy!

It's not a normal business. Not to mention the close to 70% taxes the government take

Petrol dropped by a cent from 147.9 to 146.9 in my local overnight. i know its sod all of a difference but at least it was in the right direction :)

All Topaz though, would you not expect them to be the same?

I filled up last night, first time ever - more out of fear that it would run out and I would have to cycle 18km to and fro from work, wouldn't like to see that happen.

The majority of sites are franchised - they can charge as much or as little as they like within reason.

No if you opened a garage yourself tomorrow you could sign with topaz to be your supplier, they would fit out the forecourt with the signage and supply you with fuel at an agreed margin off the schedule price.

They cannot tell you what to charge as that would consititute price fixing.

AFAIK Topaz recommend prices to the different forecourts but doesn't tell them what to charge.
Think of the former Topaz on Dublin's south quay. Topaz couldn't stop them being the most expensive place in the country and Danny Murphy (Topaz's then CEO) was on the record saying how it was shocking and their contract wouldn't be renewed (which it wasn't).

That would be pretty depressing. 50 quid will bring my car fairly close to full :D

The two garages in listowel have charged exactly the same prices as each other for the last few years ie 143. That was until today when one of the garages raised theres to 146. I could almost guarantee that the other garage will match them at 146 in the next few days!

The current info is that they're putting up Motor Tax, so I don't see why they'd bother lowering fuel taxes.

    wrong side of 1.50 already.

How long will it be until we see the €2/litre barrier broken? We really need to reduce the near €1/litre in taxes that we pay currently.

well if they increase anything it will be a great start for kenny/gilmore, wouldn't it having said they are lowering the fuel almost immediately.
its just outrageous the price of fuel.

45 litre tank but I usually fill as soon as the petrol light comes on, I dont like running the car low on petrol in case it dislodges some gunk from the bottom of the tank, clogging fuel lines.

In fairness they aren't even in power yet. These things take time and if numpties expect changes to happen in the blink of an eye they may as well leave the country

Sick of a lot of the ill founded complaining of people

They have no power to change anything immediately until they get their seals of office, we'll just have to wait until then to see if their promises come through (though I wouldn't hold my breath).

As they aren't in power nothing will be immediately obvious for a time. Give them a chance they aren't magicians. I do drive and I ain't a shill. I'm just a realist and not a thicko ;)

In other new I hear Gilmores car was clamped outside the Dáil this morning

average price 149.9 and rising ridiculous

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,650 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

If you're expecting a new Govt. to reduce the price of motor fuel you're living on a different planet to the real world. The budget deficit is still negative, that means the Govt. is still spending more than it is receiving in taxes so how can they reduce taxes?

Don't pin your hopes on anything anyone said during the election campaign, remember that both FG and Labour can use the fact that they're in coalition to simply 'forget' what they promised in the election campaign and if confronted with the unfulfilled election promise they can simply say that it was part of their policy but they had to give it up along with several other policy matters as part of the negotiations for Govt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭jimmynokia

im well aware of that again its just going to show the lies these politicians will tell to get into power so its one corrupted government gone and another come in
    where does it stop
they take 90 cent per litre which is a crime
so you enjoy the hike in fuel
just by general chit chat with locals etc people are saying they wont drive so in turn this will stop sales of cars ,people wont purchase fuel so to make a long story short they will loose out
i remember seen somebody saying have a no fill your car day or something to that effect but that would need to be a country wide thing and for more than one day to make a point
as usual we all bitch and moan and sit back and take it
look at where we are now new government almost im place and its already corrupt
