It is looking like Michael McNamara, the barrister and farmer from East Clare is going to top the poll according to the tallies :)

Please note this was when 58% of boxes were tallied, now subject to change.

First boxes open were East Clare/Shannon, which would be his stronghold, you'd expect Kilrush to be a strong labour vote as well, initial tallies from Ennis, East Clare & Shannon initial opening. It's hard to think of where the transfers will come from for the FF candidates, so it could be the first time in the history of the state that FF doesn't have a seat in Clare, personally I'm amazed by this, I would have thought there were enough FF die hards in Clare to get at least 1 in, although you'd imagine that Hillery's main vote would come from the west

    30% of boxes open
Ennis, Shannon, and East Clare tallied
Joe Carey FG 3300, Tony Mulcahy FG 2600, Michael Mc Namara Lab 2400, Pat Breen FG 2300 Timmy Dooley FF 2200 James Breen Ind 2100 John Hillery FF 1400

Wow, massive drop in voter turn out, nearly 80,000 voted last time around, I would imagine that this is the first time that a FF candidate didn't top the poll. Transfers will once again be the big thing, I wouldn't imagine that FF will get many transfers from the independents, they might get a few from the Green candidate (Meaney), I would say that the forth seat will come down to which of the "big hitters" gets eliminated first, judging by that list I would say that Hillery will go which should be enough to get Dooley through.

I dont think that Dooley will get enough transfers from Hillary to get over the line. He was the only true west Clare candidate from the main parties, he was not associated with the last Dail plus a lot of FF people may have voted for him because of the family tradition but not given Dooley their No 2 in protest. As James Breen is from the same gene pool he could pick up enough of Hillary's transfers here to keep him ahead of Dooley.

The low turnout is expected due to core FF voters not voting FF but would not vote for anyone else thus they did not vote at all. If this is true then West Limerick should show the same anomaly.

Mrs D did any of the indos aside from James tally enough to get there deposit back ?

Looks like Hillery's transfers will swing it for Dooley and get him home. Imagine how well he would have polled if he had totally closed Ennis hospital and Shannon airport.

Some wishful thinking from the Clare Champion ....................

    Dooley seat in danger?
    Written by NC (Clare Champion)

Fianna Fail's sitting TD in Clare deputy Timmy Dooley could struggle to retain his seat. His running mate Dr John Hillery was excluded on the ninth count and the redistribution of his votes will now decide who is next eliminated.

Deputy Dooley currently has 7,071 votes, less than independent James Breen who is on 7,678 and Fine Gael's Tony Mulcahy who has 7,228.

James Breen is a former Fianna Fail County Councillor and could benefit from some of Dr Hillery's transfers.

Deputy Dooley needs in excess of just over 4,500 votes to make the quota. If he does not get sufficient transfers from running mate Dr Hillery his seat could be in danger.

Deputy Dooley is likely to garner a significant number of transfers from Dr Hillery which would put him ahead of Fine Gael candidate Councillor Tony Mulcahy. However if Councillor Mulcahy is eliminated on the 10th count, Breen is likely to get more of his transfers than Dooley. This would mean Breen would take the fourth seat.

Of those remaining, Dooley has received the fewest transfers so far.

Yeah, that is true but tally men are expecting a 60% - 70% transfer from Hillery to Dooley. I bet James is sorry he had a barney with Hillery during the Clare FM debates.

Carey and P Breen should get the bulk, and Breen will be elected. His surplus should go to Carey.

J Breen will end up being eliminated. Two FG.
