It looks like Brian may lose his seat.

I personally think with his health issues this may be the best thing for him. Don't be surprised to see him back at the next election.

I think he is a man who has served his country with all his heart. I don't belive he made the right decisions in a lot of cases but I can't fault him for doing what he believed was in the best interests of the country.

I'll be delighted to see Hanafin go.

I think it's good to see a lot of FF TD's lose their seats, It's time for change and for those involved in FF to leave politics. I agree with the OP with his health issues and the tremendous stress of being minister for finance it's a good time to go.

Really? Is he likely to be one of the casualties? Very sad. Made a few missteps along the way but it's a pity to see one of the good guys - both able and with his heart in the right place - lost to us. Ah well...

Good riddance, I have absolutely no feelings about him and reserve any sympathy purely for those that continue to suffer as a result of his actions.

How can you knoa within 20 minutes of some boxes being opened? Hanafin and Lenihan will hold on.

    +1 to this

and to the op: BL gave a blanket guarantee to the banks and added anglo to that guarantee. Anglo being a bank that the ordinary irish person on the street had nothing to do with. Read that, at the time the country was taking in 34B in revenue, and BL guaranteed 440B. How was that in the best interests of the country?

just like the rest of his party..IMF yes men

Each member of FF should bow out of politics, If the party is to ever recover. Always have this image of Lenihan a couple of years ago stating at the budget that the worst was over then he introduced this one.

The country is going through an economic crisis and you and others want someone unable to do sums to get back in to fix irelands mess.

You are having a laugh, he along with cowen and bertie ruined this country, people have pity for him because of his illness, I don't, he'll be able to afford the best healthcare with his extorsionate pension, unlike the less fortunate in society whose services will be diminished further over the coming years

    "Cheapest bailout.............."

    Good riddance, spoofer.

Health issues have no bearing in it.

Lenihen nice man ??? Nonsense and irrelevant. He was totally out of his depth and put party loyalty ahead of the country time and time again. Hopefully today will bring down the curtain on the lenihen political dynasty, good riddance.

word around Dublin 15 is his health is a serious issue at this stage and for his family's sake he should bow out of the dail. His seat is looking very unsafe

Brian can talk and he makes everything sound so real but unfortunately its usually so so wrong.

    That's becasue he's utterly rehearsed.

The morning the Greens rang Cowen at the radio station they caught Lenihan on the hop and he was tongue tied for a good 10-15 seconds.

I hope he takes his brother with him.

As a Dublin West voter I hope FF will not get a seat here. I have nothing personal against Brian Lenihan but I think it is time that FF spent some time in the wilderness for the good of the country.

I have met him and I still have the same opinion.

Hope he makes a full recovery from his illness but time for him to go. An election should be about policies and past performance both of which were poor. Does seem a nice guy though

ordinary people are involved in credit unions though. this organisation had 15 billion tied up in anglo.

anyway it's dissappointing to hear Hanafin will keep her seat:(

i thought the same until he got haughty with a journalist who caught him out telling a porkie at press conference
also his I don't accept that mantra became a bit irritating after a while.

regardless his career as a whole was a good one, the banking issues are yet to be determined as good or bad, I can see it being the right move long term

He's been returned to his seat, first one called after the full tally.
    RTE Radio 1 announced it.

Strange thing to say about someone you have 'absolutely no feelings about'. God knows what you'd say about someone you had negative feelings about!

Very sad about Lenihan, very sad about Hanifan.

We should all be afraid of what Fianna Fáil will look like without their good people on the front bench.

DO YOU EVEN RELISE WHAT IS HAPPENING?! LENIHAN WILL MOST LIKELY RETAIN HIS SEAT.

Why are people just reading the thread title??

No one has retained their seat at this stage - no votes have been counted, just tallies.

Not to be pedantic, but tallies are actual votes that have been counted, the only qualifier are that they are indicators of first preferences.

Dublin West constituency is a bit of an anti-climax. it's a 4 horse race in a 4 seat constituency, with Lenihen retaining his seat.

Brian may yet get through. I agree 100% with your sentiments and I wish him and his family well.

My joy is seeing Mary Hanifan go will only be exceeded, if she is joined by the foul-mouthed Mary Coughlan. Now that we've had the exit poll, we need the exit tax on the obscene payouts some of these self-servers will get.

How did people vote this guy back in? Who are these idiots? Seriously, more than 1 in 7 people put a 1 beside that fool's name. That's scary!
