im guessing your not in a gym? maybe try this workout a bodyweight workout > http://www.muscleandstrength.com/workouts/full-body-bodyweight-workout.html
with maybe some cardio incorporated 2 - 3 times a week.Key is to try ease into it and not try to do too much at once as this will only exhaust you and probably result in you giving up.If you cant do certain exercises for the full set like pull ups do as many as you can and try to build up overtime.Try for one extra rep a week.If you want to lose weight you need to fix up your diet.

As said by Jason, the best way is to ease yourself into things.

Rushing into an exercise program will only wear you out and put a large strain on your body before it's ready.

Start off a basic program for yourself, say 5 situps/pushups/squats, and increase the number when you can comfortably perform them.

Work out a jogging/running route to suit you. For example I have two routes, a 2 mile and a 4 mile, which I do every second night of the week.
    eg:
    Monday: 2 Mile
    Wednesday: 4 Mile
    Friday: 2 mile.

Pushing yourself to hard at first usually ends up in pain and injuries, as well as being demotivated to continue exercising.

Yep, you got to build up slowly. Probably the 3 best things you can do to prepare yourself for military:

    1. Running - everyday
    2. Weight training - big compound moves
    3. Martial arts - one that does a lot of condition exercises - i.e. old school circuit training / bodyweight exercises.

Google "Military Strength Training Exercises" and you will find some info on what to do.

I also got my first kettlebell the other day - this could be good. Functional strength training / muscular endurance.

The fitter and stronger you are before you start, the better!

    what diet would you recommend?

A well balanced, healthy diet is all you need. Avoid refined, processed foods. So get most, if not all, of your carbs from vegetables, fruits, nuts etc. Eat lean proteins - chicken, eggs, fish. Lots of salads, soups etc. Nutrition is the key, and eating to grow. Lots more info on this page: guide to healthy eating

Not sure what location you are living in, but every Mon, Wed & Fri there is a great aerobics workout from 7.30pm in the Curragh Army gym for one hour, its only €4 a session and its addictive. The army guys manage it and set up different stations with different excercises, but its not like a boot camp and more comfortable and encouraging if anything. Normally about 60 people go a night and people are all different shapes and sizes.
Also the calorie count app on the iphones is great to help you keep track of your daily calories.
    Best of luck!
