    Hi,

I'm 42, 6ft tall and have had hypertension (high blood pressure) for 15 years for which I take standard medication so it's under control. I constantly battle with my weight (currently 95KG whioch is about 10kg over my target) and whilst I go to the gym 3 times a week for an hour at a time doing 20km jogging, rowing etc I do like my grub and find it hard to turn down a weekly fry, a take away or two during the week and of course a few too many beers.

I know the correct answer is to address my diet but whilst I have some success from time to time ultimately I've failed over a 10 year period to premanently change my diet and I don't think it's ever going to happen to be honest.

A good friend with a weight problem who does a good bit of excercise but puts away the grub and pints has been taking Proagri9-plus (See http://proargi9-plus.com) for a long time and sewars by it. He says it gives him a huge energy boost and suppresses his appetite. He's lost a good bit of weight over that time period he's been taking it.

Now I'm thinking of taking it but I don't believe in silver bullet solutions and have never been let down by the old adage that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

Any thoughts from the diet and nutrition experts here? What is Proagri-9-plus and is it safe and recommended for my circumstances? From my own web research it seems to be marketed by direct marketing/network marketing/multi level marketing type companies and they set off warning bells as most of them are glorified pyramid schemes selling some sort of snake oil.

Give it to me straight boys and girls!!

    Ben

I've nothing against the ingredients themselves, but the price they are charging is out of this world. You could buy the same stuff in Holland & Barrett for a fraction of the cost. Bear in mind, this is a supplement, it's not a meal replacement, and you still have to exercise good nutritional choice and portion control.

Plus, I can't see anything in there would would suppress appetite.

    You asked for it straight?

Sort out diet firstly. You're not a child :)

If you fail constantly - ask yourself why. Are you setting yourself up for sabotage by been too restrictive. Remember - don't do diet, do something that you can maintain for the rest of your life. If that means you have to have chocolate- then have some, just do not do the dog on it and work your way up to some good decent chocolate.
Plus to add that supplements are no where near as effective unless your diet is sorted as if your body is not getting a decent whack of nutrients - it cannot do all the jobs you want of it - so the chances of getting decent benefit out of a supplement is diminished greatly.

Also that price is ridiculous - you could get it much cheaper and locally in a shop nearby!

OK so the upshot is stop looking for a magic pill/powder and get real with the lifestyle/diet/portion control???

OK, I hear you loud and cear but what exactly would this Proagri9-Plus stuff do if I did take it? What's it designed to do?

metamorphosis - what does your AC/DC strapline mean?

Do you lift weights at the gym?

Always find weightlifting gives you a lot more wiggle room dietwise. It takes loads of calories to grow new muscle. With cardio you don't get as much of that

Very little for you. Marginal useful effect for someone who is lifting weights, but even then, there are other supps which are much more effective and much cheaper.

Bottle of Smoke - No I don't do any weights, just a mixture of (mostly) treadmill plus bike, rower and cross trainer. I'm working towards the Great Ireland 10k in April. Once that's out of the way I'll introduce weights into the weekly routine as it has become stale. Good suggestion.

Eileen, thanks for the frank advice. I'll pass on the stuff. Sounds like snake oil which might have some placebo effect if you 'believe' in it. I don't.

As far as I know the main ingredient of pro argi is L'arginine and I think this can be found in peanuts, gelatine (so jelly), cottage cheese etc so it might be worth changing diet to include these foods instead.

Yes, gelatin/jelly is a good source, and a study in Hamburg found that the protein in gelatin was more satiating than other proteins.

You can also buy l-arginine in H&B and most supplement stores for a fraction of the cost of this stuff.

Its not a product Im familiar with but I had a look at the ingredients. The truth is while it may be of some benefit it appears overhyped and over priced.

While arginine increases nitric oxide it is a substance we dont know enough about.
Yes, it is beneficial for the heart in controlled amounts what they fail to mention is that it is a potent free radical which when too much is in the body, can cause tissue damage, inlfammation and cancer. Thus if the 5g of arginine they provide produces enough to have such a dramatic effect on the heart the question has to be asked what are the silent effects on other parts of the body.
I doubt it does harm, I just believe the benefit they claim is exaggerated

Second, the rising growth hormone claims are totally out of context and oral arginine at this dose will have negligible effects on rising growth hormone in the average adult. This rules out a multitude of benefits they claim.

Third, they dont state how much resveratrol is in it. While resveratrol seems to be highly protective of heart it is only at high doses. At these doses it also has a blood thinning effect.

Overall I would not believe the hyped claims and with this in perspective while it may still enhance health I would not want to be paying too much for it.

The vitamin D is very beneficial but can be easily gotten as a supplement on its own.

I have had a company called synergy trying to entise me to join as an agent. At first I thought 'here we go , another get rich scheme' but the more I googled Proargi9 and their products the less negative information I find. I still feel sceptical about the whole thing. Im just wondering has anyone else joined them as an agent and what their opinions are/were ?

I have slightly blood pressure and am about a stone overweight which isnt helped by lack of exercise over past 6 months and an office job which just does not burn the calories. Im not looking for a quick fix but if there is a natural supplement that improves my health then Im interested in it personally, never mind making a few bob from it.

By the way, they claim that it has huge earning potential (they obviously would not say anything else I suppose!) However it just makes me wonder why they dont tap into the medical world and sell it to the large medical companies who already have market share and understand these products.

I had a BPro heart screening by Heartsavers recently which is a great non-invasive way to have your heart checked out, proven independantly to be as good as an angiogram and which only cost me 50 euro. My test showed I was pretty safe though borderline and the guy then advised I should take Proargi-9 Plus and he sold me a tub for 65 euro. I now have second doubts about taking this after researching it and this is what I discovered: http://www.armytimes.com/article/20110321/OFFDUTY03/103210301/Mixed-opinions-on-ex-Army-doc-s-PTSD-8216-cure-
