I just love America too much. It is honestly the greatest country ever. Opportunity abound, best higher education system in the world and most enlightened form of government.

Please help convince me to make the trek across the Atlantic to your nice country.

I like it cause its got the word "Legion" in it, which is pretty badass.

Opportunity doth abound indeed, but I'm not sure about the other two. Higher education at degree and masters level is no better than here tbh. It's at doctoral and post-doc level where there are 15 or 20 great universities with huge endowments that there's a difference.

Use one of your bountiful opportunities to take a week's holiday. Transatlantic flights do go both ways, you know. You could nearly cut it down to a day-trip if you miss the US that much when you're here.

Heh, I wish. It shouldn't take me too long to pay it off though, I'm guessing ~6-12 years.

I am indeed from Vulcan. I joined the Federation after completing my secondary education against my fathers wishes. I'd highly recommend it, a lifetime of service is rewarding indeed.

Thanks for that. Do you have any idea how that list is compiled?

    Didn't think so.

My point is correct. (I'm doing PhD research at one of the universities on that list)

It uses a standardized criteria, including prestige of professors, nobel winners, student success rate, research and some other junk.

If you end up coming here, dont say that! The most annoying thing ever is when someone with the biggest american accent is like 'Oh, you're Irish? Me too'. Like, for real? You think you are irish? To all those annoying american people that say that: stfu, thanks:) And i have never heard people from other countries say that, pretend theyre Irish. Like i know there was mass emigration to America, but my granny is english and im not like oh yeah im english too. And my great great great great grandad is german but im not like oh im german too. Like be proud of where you are ACTUALLY from. Where you where born and raised and educated and where your friends are. Ok, rant over!

I never claimed to be Irish. If we're playing that game I'm Canadian, thankfully born in the United States. I'm quite proud to be an American, but the differences are socially created and extremely superficial.

Before you can pass through immigration here (unlike the mighty US, over her you won't really need a passport, finger print, photo, 100 forms filled out and a lengthy interrogation session) you will have to answer a difficult questionnaire:
    1. Do you like the British?

However, no tourist is coming over here to measure our cliffs.

Of course not. We ran train on them in 1776 for a reason.

You didn't. You provided a list of universities ranked entirely on their research output, not on their teaching standards. Now if you think that that is what determines the quality of higher education, you may have a point, but I don't think it does. Great researchers do not make great teachers, and somebody who is doing a BA in Harvard will not get a noticeably better education than someone doing a BA in Trinity College Dublin.

Here are the criteria of the ranking you provided:
Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
Highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories
Papers published in Nature and Science
Papers indexed in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index
Per capita academic performance of an institution (all the above divided by number of staff)
Now if you said that the US has the best research universities in the world, I'd have no particular argument with that.

No, but they love to drive on our winding roads. Come to Ireland; only the farmers and drug dealers are allowed to carry fire arms here. We don't trust the Gardai (cops), or those under the age of 10 to hold loaded killing machines. We like canadians, so answer the "do you like the british?" question and tell us all you're canadian and you'll be grand. We'll even buy you a Guinness (after we've taken your wallet without you knowing). Don't forget to bring captain Kirk with you!

On a serious note, we have a great country and we're usually very friendly, funny folk who get along with everyone (except the brits...joke). @coffeelover...I wouldn't be shouting any English connections from the highest cliffs in europe. :)

I think your first post answers this question; many people find American arrogance to be extremely irritating. The United States has an incredible number of faults, and it could be argued that some European countries are better places to live.
