    Hi
I was actually about to ask the same question. I was talking to a colleague at work and he said that Liam Doran is very good but he's not sure about the others. Apparently the notes are very good so if I do one of the courses, I wouldn't mind swapping notes with someone who is doing a different subject.

    Hi
I have registered with Chartered Grind School for FR. A few of my friends went to them last year some on the main course and some on the repeats and found the lecturer Dave O'Donoghue to be excellent, he is doing the course this year as well and also doing the Auditing.

Used them for my FAEs they know their stuff those lads and their notes are useful too.

Did anyone attend the 'New FAE' course for the CGS last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭daddydick

dave o donoghue for financial reporting is excellent

i would advise anyone to go, learn his consolidation method and use it. dont bother with the notes in the books/course material, dave's way is by far the easiest and the best

I went to the management accounting course on the old fae course- honestly worth every cent I thought the exam was "easy" on the day when every other exam in that subject I had struggled with.

I know it is alot of money but if you are struggling with any subject it is well worth it.

Best of luck to everyone doing exams this year :)

Is anyone doing the Chartered Grind school course in Cork?? Have applied to do the SFMA and I am considering FR but they need minimum of 10 to run it or else we can choose to go to Dublin??

To those who are currently attending the FR grinds..

How is it going? Is it helpful? Are ye feeling a lot more confident for FR?

Do they mainly focus on exam technique?

Just finished the FR Grinds at CGS with Dave O Donoghue. The course can only be described as amazing, eyeopening, inspiring and an actual learning experience. I learned so much over the 3 days that I am actually in shock, I never even heard of a teacher with his enthusiasm to impart knowledge and he has a great ability to expalin an awkard accounting concept in an easily understood manner and a sense of humour thrown in. The guy seems to just love accounting. I would have been peeved if the course was a farce after spending the €200 on it but it was money very well spent. The notes you get on the course are priceless in themselves.

Enough said. I am looking forward to the auditing at the weekend. Never thought I would hear myself even thinking that and.......... I hear say the SFMA lecturer is a bit special as well

he does it in steps, schedules, as opposed to T accounts. I didnt have a method so for me is good!

    Hey Eve,
Ya I dont have a method either its so long since I covered consolodation.it sounds good, let hope it helps. The count down is on to the exams

Hey Louise as EveT says he has a very structured schedule appraoch which is straightforward and logical enough as long as you practice the approach a few times

There is a poster on the CAP 2 Financial Reporting thread looking for details of grinds ouside of Dublin could you post the details of the course in Cork up on that thread?

How did the FR course go for you? Are you getting through the study?

    Hi Enda,
Ya done the Financial Reporting and the SFMA in Chartered grind school. Excellent for both, Only for them I can honestly say I wouldnt have a hope of passing. They have everything so structured and there approaches to questions are good.:D
Saying that finding it difficult get through the questions, I'm doing modular basis and definatly think the Tax and Auditing last year were easier.
    How are you getting on??

I'm doing all 4 next week and must admit it's extremly difficult to feel confident. The information overload is unbelievable. So much material and 4 exams in four days in tough going. At this stage, I just want them done!!!!

I just don't understand how unprepared for these exams I am after 7 and a half weeks of study!!! I just can't wait for them to be over at this stage!!!

I have to agree, after almost 8 weeks I've fuck all done. FR took up so much time, it never ends and theres no consistent method for answering consolidation. The other standards aren't too bad though.

Have yet to tackle tax, hoping to do it over the weekend so its fresh for Tuesday. Relying on notes and books for SFMA and Audit.

I'm thinking two out of four would be a miracle at this stage.

Hey guys. Sorry for bumping the thread, but an interesting thing happened.

I used the CGS portal on it's website to go through something that's like paypal to authorise a transaction to pay for one of the courses with my credit card. CGS never received my payment authorisation (which I was notified by their administrator, who I found to be very accusatory and rude) and i've just been notified by my bank that my credit card was hacked by fraudsters.

I haven't attempted to use my credit card since that instance. And I did not use it recently before 'authorising' payment to CGS (which is why I suspect that the fraud/hacking may be through there, I could be entirely wrong however).

Just a heads up to anyone who may have made/authorised payments using this portal. Just keep an eye on your bank statement/CC activity and notify your bank if any unusual transactions have occurred.

    Hi Hackysack,

I had a similar issue with Paypal on a different site and like you I assumed it was the fault of the vendor. However, vendors that use paypal to get paid only provide a link to Paypal on their websites and you need to keep an eye on the icon at the bottom of the screen (looks like a lock) when you're authorising the payment to make sure that you're in a 'secure' connection - otherwise hackers can intercept the details of your cc

The other thing is that my CC refunded me the money taken from my credit card when I contacted them and told them.

Had first day of FAE financial reporting revision class today. I'm shocked at how much I learned. I honestly don't think I could learn that by myself in a week. Well worth the money. So it got me thinking, I might sign up for the tax one aswell, if it's anywhere near as good as the financial reporting I'll be happy. I was wondering though, I've booked 3 courses already and you get a discount for booking 4 or more. Does anyone know will I still get the discount if I book it seperately and not in the same booking as the other 3?
    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 FAE_UCH

Yeah they will refund it to the Card you book it on.. You have to pay it all first and then they refund

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭Ciara471

So I've booked the tax revision class for tomorrow but I never got the e-mail about it. Does anyone know what I should bring? I don't want to be sitting there unprepared.

You need the "Session 1-10" questions. But I'm not sure what they are

What times do they CGS courses generally run from? 10am-4pm?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭aca101

Anyone bought the CGS notes...they're charging €50 a pop. I thought the financial accounting book was very good, 50 quid is a lot tho. I wonder would the other books be worth getting?

€50 is a lot but might be worth it! How do u go about getting just the notes??

Half 9 until 5. And they're not like the institute lectures...they actually go on until 5.

The books are quite good. I've only done financial reporting and tax so far. The tax book is quite good in that it's got around 35 questions and solutions in it ranging from easy questions to get your head around different concepts and hard questions to practice exam standard. I think they are worth the 50. Or get one and get a friend to get another and copy them.

How do you go about obtaining them from the grind school if you haven't booked any courses?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭aca101

You could try ringing the adminstrator (number is online)..but beware she is pig ignorant, serious attitude problem...so different to the lecturers, who are really nice. Couldn't get over how rude she was on the phone...you'd swear she was paying us hundreds of euro to attend the courses!

Aparently there isn't a book for business leadership for sale, there was just different handouts in class. I know the financial acc notes were really good, defo worth the 50 quid...they layed out the IASs well.

I have to agree with you on that, pure ignorant.
Would love to get my hands on the booklets if at all possible.

Would have to agree with the folks above about the Chartered Grind School administrator. I was later offered a place on their waiting list for one of the courses but decided that I wasn't giving them a cent after how rude I found their administrator.

Ended up going with Griffith College's Grinds for the subject. They haven't happened yet so I can't say whether the courses are any use, but it's half the price of CGS and I was at least treated with the respect a customer should be treated with!
