How do you pronounce the Dail. How do you pronounce Fine Gael. How do you pronounce Enda Kenny.

I weep for the people of Ireland and the people of AH. Roll on Friday and we can go back to threads slagging off jedward and comparing who's bottom is lovelier, Sharon Ni Bheolain or Emma Ledden*.

    The answer is Emma's

I hate how Anne Doyle pronounces it. "In the Dhoyle today..." with that horrible brown paper neck...

RTE keep changing the pronunciation of everything - they're worse than the Beeb these days. Dáil has picked up more of a 'w' sound in the last couple of months for some reason.

    Where's the anti-Irish brigade?

Dáil is an Irish word. Shouldn't you be calling it 'The House of Commons'?

    Where's the anti-Irish brigade?

Dáil is an Irish word. Shouldn't you be calling it 'The House of Commons'?

    Not strictly speaking.

In political terms, it is similar to the British House of Commons, in that it's the lower house of parliament, however, the literal translation of Dail Eireann is "Assembly of Ireland.

In the constitution, Article 15 describes the body as "a House of Representatives to be called Dáil Éireann" (Teach Ionadóirí ar a dtugtar Dáil Éireann).

But almost everyone calls it the Dáil, because Irish people - whether they speak Irish or not, or agree with the funding towards gaelic or the teaching of it in schools - are still Irish, not British, and I have yet to meet anybody in this country who forms part of this mythical "anti-Irish brigade" which you speak of.
