Started using Whey Protein now I have headaches :/

    I bought EAS 100% Whey Protein (strawberry) on Monday. There was no measuring scoop in the tub, but it says that 5 tablespoon = 30grams which would mean a tablespoon is 6grams.

    So I put 11 just a little over level tablespoons into 180ml of water x 3 drinks = 198grams as my body weight is 192 lbs and from reading around here and on the net they say you should take a gram per lbs of body weight. Would you say this way of meassuring is ok? or should I use a weighting scales?

    Now I've been reading up on why Whey Protein would cause headaches and I've found out that is because of an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener (Aspartame) which is in EAS 100% Whey Protein as Aspartic Acid.

    I drank the first protein shake at 11am yesterday, then the next at 6pm I then went the gym at 6:45pm and about 8pm I started to get this headache so left the gym at about 8:15pm and had the 3rd protein shake. I still have the headache now, it feels like a hangover so I'm amusing I used to much protein to water ratio. While in the gym I drank 3 bottles of 500ml of water.

    Any advice guys? this is my first time taking any type of supplements.

    Thanks

    Have you considered that it may just be a coincidence?

    How much water do you drink per day?

    Headaches happen for a plethora of reasons.
    It may have nothing to do with the whey.

    For the past 5/6 weeks I've been drinking about 3 liters a day, before this I'd never really drink water just have about 7/8 cups of tea a day.

    I think the problem is I'n not drinking enough water or it's the sweetener used in the flavoring.

    I think you might be getting the measure wrong - a tablespoon is usually equal to around 15grams of protein - a teaspoon is equal to about 5 grams

    Ok thanks, I think my best bet to to use a weighting scales and do it properly as using a tablespoon isn't very accurate. :)

    You should have 180-192g protein per day including your normal meals, unless you had no meat, eggs, milk etc, you're overdoing it. Plus as noted above, 11 tbsp seems like a lot more than 2 scoops (60 grams)

    Taking a gram of protein per lb of body weight INCLUDES your food intake. So if your eating 5 meals a day which all include protein then your taking too much.

    A supplement should be used to fill a gap or used after a resistance workout to facilitate fast absorption of protein into the body. As an evening snack or a snack in general. BUT, always to support an already very good diet which comprises the right mix of protein, carbs and fats.

    Was it just that 1 time you got a headache or has it happened repeatedly? Has that type of sweetener given you headaches before in say like in diet drinks?

    Have you stopped drinking all these cups of tea?
    If you have then the headaches could be due to caffeine withdrawal.
    That's about the equivalent of 4 cups of coffee, most people would be twitching after all that.

    I bought a digital scales today and I measured 11 tablespoon and weighted it and it only weight 42 grams so I didn't over do it on protein even though I had chicken for my lunch yesterday.

    @deadlybuzzman

    I've never taken any type of supplements before yesterday.

    Aspertame/Aspartame is Aspartic Acid which is in EAS Whey Protein. Here are the ingredients;

    Anyway I still have the headache even thought I've stopped taking it on Tuesday.

    So 2 x 30g drinks a day should be enough do ya's think?

    Yes and no, at the beginning of the year I cut out tea altogether and I was grand. For the past 3/4 weeks I've drinking it again, about 2/3 cups a day with splenda.

    Definitely use a weighscale!
    I gotta say IMO 11 x slightly rounded tablespoons is a lot more than 60 grams.

    At a rough guess you were putting 110-120 grams into 180mls of water.

    11 of my tablespoons is 115g.

    This is too much.

    My very strong view on how to mix is a ratio of 1:6 so for 120grams you should have had 750mls water.

    As for the headaches - hard to say.

    BTW - I have just read you saying 11 tablespoons was 42 grams? Teaspoon or tablespoon - it would be a very small tablespoon to give less than 4grams of whey when slightly rounded.:)

    Well the tablespoon I used was a Weetabix branded tablespoon :D, so it's probably not a proper tablespoon...

    I made 3 shakes with 180ml of water each which contained approx 42grams of whey protein each.

    I found this whey protein calculator - http://www.wheyoflife.org/facts/calculator.cfm

    I chose "Recreational Adult Exercise" and my weight now is 188lbs and it gave me a result of "Estimated Total Daily Protein Requirement in Grams" of 94-141.

    So lets say I make 2 x 50gram shakes with 300mls of water each, that should be ok or too much to take?

    LOL! :D I know all about odd spoons mate - my breakfast spoon is a four year old telescopic tony the tiger one! In four parts! LOL

    At 192lbs you can take anywhere from 192 - 288 grams of protein per day.

    My protein shakes atm are always 75grams of whey with 450mls water. If using milk I'd do 400mls milk and 66grams whey.

    I'd go 60grams in 400mls mate twice a day and review in a month or so.

    Best of luck mate - any update on the headaches?

    HAHA :)...

    Thanks for the advice :) I think I'll try a 50gram/300mls mix in the mornings and after the gym on training days, as I'm afraid I'll over do it again :)... If that works out ok, I can up it to 60gram/400mls.

    The headaches where worse today for some reason, I had to go the chemist it was that bad, he suggested Solpadeine, I've taken 4 so far today and thankfully the headache seems to be holding off now.

    Thanks again :)

    Maybe it's not caffeine withdrawal so.
    Did you just start using splenda recently too? If you're blaming whey why not blame that too. I just googled it and there's a lot of personal testimonials about how splenda gave them all migraines and the like.

    Maybe you should just go to the doctor.

    Aspertame/Aspartame is Aspartic Acid which is in EAS Whey Protein. Here are the ingredients;

    No is isn't.
    Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Found in oats, avocado, and aspartame
    Aspartame is a artificial sweetner.

    EAS protein doesn't contain aspartame, the sweetner it uses is sucralose
