I know we have a thread outlining political parties policies on lgbt issues. I'm curious though, what are your concerns and what would you like to see independents or political parties bring to the table.

Short and sweet, but I'd like to see further headway being made with legislation to protect trans person with regard to the equality act. That and changes allowing me to change my documents without much red tape and not needing the final surgery as a requirement to do so. As a member of the lgbt community, I would like to see civil marriage being introduced.

Besides the lgbt issues, I would like to see the government do something about jobs and the economy, but wouldn't everyone.

Full same sex marriage is the main thing for me.

After that would be a serious campaign tackling homophobia especially in secondary schools.

As for 'T' part. I think we need to take a more 'European' approach to Trans issues, and most importantly we once again need a huge campaign tackling transphobia. The biggest enemy here is ignorance.

Getting rid of Section 37 of the 'Equality' legislation.

Most people are shocked to find such a thing exists.

Only 1 party has committed to this

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

    Was it SF??

I think it is one of the most disgusting pieces of legislation left in Ireland to be honest. I'm doing my Primary HDip now, and this means I may have to live a lie in my teaching career in this country - not that you go shouting out "I'm gay" in your classroom, but you want to be able to talk about your private life in the staff room to a certain extent. Plus, I think the fact that I'm an atheist means I could be fired at any minute too. Such a stupid law.

How many people have been let go because of this?

Someone told me a while back that they know it's probably unconctitutional, so they don't actually enforce it.

None to my knowledge, though how many people it has kept out of teaching, or kept quiet in the staff room, or away from going for promotion*, who knows?

Now that civil partnership is a reality, what happens the person who registers their partnership, but who has played the pronoun game in staff rooms for years - must they now out themselves to the religious authorities who still control and own so many of our schools and run the risk of being sacked?

It may not ever be enforced and may be unenforceable, but that is all the more reason for getting rid of it, now. Then let's get the religious influence out of schools. Ridiculous in this day and age, particularly given the history of the incumbents in our schools.

True, my bad. Although if the same case occurred now, I don't see how the school could be prevented from taking the same course of action under section 37

Done a bit of digging and maybe I'm blind, but I've only seem to find Sein Feins policy on LGB only. No mention of T what so ever. I even left a comment asking about it.

    Groundhog day

Labours manifesto is the only one mentioning trans issues
Labour will advance equality for trans-gender people by enacting gender recognition legislation, and by extending to them protections afforded by existing equality legislation.

Behind the times but check out Labour LGBT if anyone hasn't voted yet and still need convincing. Not into main stream politics, but I think I'll be giving them my vote.

So now that the votes are cast and we're starting to get a picture of what the next government might be like what do you think will happen with regards general equality measures?

I think we'll see some minor but necessary improvements across the board but nothing big like equal marriage rights. I'm wondering what will happen with regards to the gender recognition act, I have no idea what stand FG would take there, but I'm pretty confident that section 37 will be gotten rid of, its not just about LGBT rights its about everyones rights - disgusting piece of legislation...

It looks almost certain that F.G. will have to share power with Labour, so there's a decent chance of LGBT issues being positively addressed. Sad to see Creighton has got the most votes in Dublin S.E.

Indeed but Meath and Dublin North West have elected Ireland first 2 openly gay TDs

Not certain, but the way the newly elected are speaking I'd say the conference room is all ready booked for coalition talks.

Much? It is all they've been campaigning for recently, I'd imagine getting assurances on a few key issues would seal it.
