Last night my failingly honest boyfriend told me I look 28/29. I'm 26. So I wasn't best pleased. I want to hear I look my age or younger. :pac: So, he says "What are you upset about? I'm 24 and people think I'm in my 30s". Do you think men care less about this stuff? I think women get judged more on their looks than men in society so men perhaps don't have to worry as much about looking older or getting older. What do ya think?

EDIT: Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.

Well, BF has a beard but so that makes him look older. But I don't have a beard to hide behind. (and thank god for that! :p )

I'm always getting IDed in the UK. But it's not a compliment, they're just complete spas over there, and don't seem to use their discretion at all when it comes to IDing people.

I'm mean, come on, I don't want to look older than my age, but I don't look 18 any more so cop the fúck on, will ye?

Bloody women. They spend their teenage years trying to look in their 20s. Then they spend their 20s and onwards trying to look in their teens.

    Never bloody happy!

No, when I was a teenager, I wanted to look 18, so that I could get served alcohol. ;) No older than that!

2 years older than you look in mid to late 20s is nothing really.

I always looked younger than my age for so long it was ridiculous, but these days I think I look older :pac:

    Ooo that's a bit harsh.

I'm 27 and still get mistaken for a 16 year old. Have been stopped at the airport twice in the last year and asked where my accompanying adult was.

I really do not look that young. I think.

is there really a massive difference in how a 26 year old and a 28 year old look anyway? Why would being told you look 28 be any different to being told you look 26?

Also, another thing about girls. If you're not prepared for a negative answer, don't ask the question.

"Do I look fat in this?"

    "Is my arse huge?"

"How old do you think I look?"

These are not real questions. They are traps!

I had that last year. They didn't actually ask where adult was, but they eyed me up when I was sitting on the plane, asked "are you travelling alone today?" and I said yes with a confused look, so they asked for my passport.
I hadn't a fcukin clue what it was about but afterwards I figured that must have been it!!

    I didn't ask the question!

But in general, these questions are asked.

If a guy asks these questions, it's because they need constructive criticism.

If I looked like a mongrel in some clothes and went to a club after my friends told me "You look great" i wouldnt be happy.

I never ask questions about my clothes because I know what I like and I know what suits me. I'm quite confident like that.

My girlfriend always asks for my opinion on clothes.

Well, she used to. Nowadays I don't answer. Because if she's wearing something and asks my honest opinion and I say "it's pretty hideous", she'll get mad at me.

So i just dont answer anymore.

A few years ago I was doing work experience in an adventure centre..
Got talking to a few of the girls who were there on a school trip at the time and the subject of me working came up.. The shock on their faces when I told them that today was my second day was brilliant!!
Even better though was when I asked them how old I thought I was!
Their answer.. 25/26? I was 16 at the time :D

A couple of years back, people would always guess I was few years younger than I really was.

Now I'm disappointed when they get my age about right. :(

    Getting older sucks.

I was out on Thursday night and i was speaking to a person I know but not all that well. When I said I was 26 she said "Oh my God, I thought you were about 30"

Then later that night another girl said "Oh my God, I thought you were like 22".

I've no idea what that makes me!

I have been told I look older than one of my sisters she is 22 :) I have also been told I look 16  I am 19 so it's not a huge difference! Aslong as I'm not mistaken for 30 right now I'll be grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭Sarn

Hasn't happened to me yet. People generally think I'm in my mid-twenties although I'm in my mid-thirties. Being carded when buying drink when I was 30 and having to explain why I didn't have any ID on me was amusing. The increasing grey in my hair may change that though.

It can be hard to tell what age someone is when people are in their late twenties, early thirties, so I wouldn't get caught up about it. Some people haven't got a clue.

You must be going to the wrong places! Not everywhere over here's that strict

    Thank fuck

Some people think I look older than I am, some think I look younger. Can't say I'm too bothered either way. If I act nervous, I can get a child ticket; if I wear my glasses, I can get a pint.

I'm 23 and I've been called "little girl" and even told I look 16/18.

I used to work in a bookies and regularly had to ask for ID from customers who didn't look 18....which was always met with "WTF what age are you? 12???!"
"No, I'm 18 and you're underage...now get out of my shop!!"

Couldn't agree more. Girls normally have great fashion sense and are looking for reassurance whereas most guys can sometimes be hit and miss and the question is really a question where we expect candor.

I'm usually told I look younger. A few weeks ago, someone asked me what year I'm in at school. I've been finished school for four years now, I'm 21. I don't mind at all. My mum turned 50 yesterday and she looks young, I think she'd pass for 40 so I don't think looking older will ever be an issue for me.

    +1.

In general I really don't give a toss, I'm 44 most put me at 40.. But if I was told I looked 50 but fit I'd be happy.

When it comes to guessing women's age I take a figure, and deduct 2 years otherwise you risk suffering their wrath.

I can remember ever being told I look older than my age.

It varies for me, I think it all depends on perception. Some days I look younger because I'm dressed casually, my hair tied back and I might have my glasses on. When I look like that I get IDed in Lidl and Dunnes if buying gargle. Some days I might make a bit more of an effort and I'd say I look my age.

I've just turned 27 and some people would swear up and down they wouldn't believe I was over 22/23, and others would say I look my age. To be honest I've learned not to ask, because mostly the answers bewilder me. I hate being asked that question too myself, as I'm useless at guessing peoples' ages and often don't want to unknowingly insult anyone.

I'd have to echo some of the other sentiments here too; I don't ask for opinions on what I wear or how I look either. If I can glance in the mirror and be content with what I see then I'm good to go!

When I put my hair in a mid ponytail, I look a lot younger.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭Up-n-atom!

I've always looked younger than my age - really sucked when I was a teenager, not so much now (I'm 26). My brother is a couple of years younger and people who don't know us generally think he is the older one. I think it's coz I'm quite petite and don't wear tons of make-up (plus I'm very pale). I dress kind of student-y as well so people tend to think I'm around college going age. If people start thinking I'm my actual age or older I think I'd freak out a bit, it's the only thing I got! The only down-side is people tend to not take you as seriously as they would if you were a bit older.

24 but most people i reckon think i look my age, i act like a 16 year old sometimes so thats makes people think i'm younger... Though if i don't shave i could look maybe 26/27 'ish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,536 ✭✭✭Dolph Starbeam

This reminds me of the Noel Furlong in the caravan bit in Father Ted, Dougal trying to guess his age,

Noel: Go on guess, you don't tell him Ted, he know, he knows...

    Dougal: 40!!!!...

    Noel: TEEEEDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,554 ✭✭✭✭alwaysadub

People always presume i'm a lot younger than i am. I had someone at the door selling something a few weeks ago who asked me to get my mam cos she thought i was a kid. That's going to the extreme! But usually it's assumed i'm anything up to 10 years younger than i really am.

I think most men want to look older because they think they look more mature until they reach their 40's then they'll begin to care how young they look and how fast they're balding. Everyone worries about getting older though.

The other week I was the only one at the table asked for my ID when my family ordered a bottle of wine. The legal drinking age here in the States is 21 and I'm 24...going onto 25. My brother is 20 but I suppose he looks far older than me because he has facial hair. It feels nice to get ID'ed :D

It actually has loads of advantages...!

Although I do hope when I reach my thirties I look exactly the same coz it'd suck if people start telling my I look 40ish!

I get this a fair bit. My brother is 11 years older than me and people think that i am the older brother.

A few years back myself and the missus went to Liverpool, She is 1 year older than me. When we were getting on the plane she was kneeling on the seat putting her bag in the thingy above and one of the air stewardess said to me "Can you ask your daughter to please sit down"

Id say by the time im 40 i will look like Mr. Burns
