right, well after deliberating for quite a long time on which car to get i have almost fully decided on a mazda 6. was gonna go down the route of a 1.6 civic or the likes but have since decided to go the sophisticated route.
i havent heard any horror stories and the only real thing that seems to annoy people is the poorish fuel consumption.
    any owners reviews here?

Dont get the diesel whatever you do.

I got one on Sunday. Great looking car, easy to drive and comfortable. I haven't noticed poor fuel consumption but im not doing a huge amount of driving anyway. Id recommend one.

I had one. 2ltr petrol version which was a nice car I have to say. Only reason I got rid was I had gotten bored of family saloons and bought an Alfa GT instead. :D

I'd have no problem buyin another one though.

Fuel consumption wise I was getting 280/300 miles to a full tank. Dont know what that is in mpg but I wouldnt say its great.

They are very solid cars though. I had no problems with the one I owned.

Do not buy the diesel version!!!!!!!!

    Has to be petrol.

Good luck with the purchase OP

I am on my second mazda6 it is a 1.8 touring. I am getting 38-40mpg on average driving. The tax is a killer at €551/year. The diesels are a disaster, they were supposed to have been rectified from 06 on but I still have heard a few horror stories about 06-07 diesels.

My wife has a 08 1.8 Sport, it's lovely to drive, handling is spot on but the ride's a little harsh on 18" wheels + low profile tyres.

You don't mention year/price? I had a 04 Sports spec one. 1.8 engine is bulllit-proof but maybe not the most advanced or refined around. Really liked everything else about the car - handling, looks etc. It was also the least troublesome car I've ever owned.
Current model is much in the same vein as the older car. Great looks, handling with similar engine range (apart from the recent 2.2 diesel addition).

sorry guys, i would be getting around a 05 but i know about the diesels being crap! i saw a 06 on donedeal advertised for 5700 so might have a look at that. im only 19 so i wont be doing a whole pile of driving until the summer really. the way i see it tax wise, its 200 more than my astra but i wouldnt go clubbing half as much as most others so thats my saving on tax:D
i mean...this is alot of car for little money i think http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1875282

another question actually lads, isnt there rumours that the tax system will be amended so that all cars will be taxed on co2 emissions after 2012 or something? i have read the mazda 6 produces a alot more emissions than other cars its size. something like 184g. could this make it catastrophic to tax then?

That would be great! I've an 06 2.2 diesel and it's a killer on tax!

Yep. Accord. Almost 900 Euro per year to tax. Drives me mad when the same car but 08 registered pays 500 Euro less using the same engine.

    I also replaced a megane with a 6.

Neither is boring. you want boring to drive, get a VW.

Fuel cons is in the mid 30's with just urban driving, so that's fine in my book (seriously folks, whaddya expect when you buy a 1.8 petrol)

I'd go for the facelifted model like below, it had some improvements including better interior and spec:

If you're buying a Mazda 6 would be shame not to go for the even more facelifted 2008 onward version, bought a 1.8L petrol 6 months and love it. Much admired by friends.

Not the cheapest to run but not bad either. As mentioned above though, the ride can be a little harsh at times, tends to vibrate a bit at motorway speeds. But overall a great car

i really only want to spend 5500 maximum really. i could get a facelift but i just dont think the jump in price is worth it. ive seen a few 06's for 5800 so might have a look. all depends on what i get for my 04 astra

The late 07 onwards model is a new model from the ground up with just some engines carried over and well outside the OP's price range anyways.

Just to say, the 2011 mazda 6 is very, very impressive. Excellent all rounder of a car, hard to see why anyone would buy anything else as a family car.

Do the diesel problem with the 6 apply to the newer 2008 model as well? I have put a deposit down on a 2008 2.0 TDI. Having second thoughts now!

    you were up early!
i think they were sorted more or less after 06 and i would say the new model diesels are fine.

So does this mean that the old shape 07 diesel model should be trouble free?

it wouldnt be as strong as other diesels but it should be ok really

Just be aware that there was some minor improvements done on the Mazda 6 in 2005. I think the model you are looking at is the pre-facelift model.

There wasn't much change done to the outside of the car but the interior is nicer in the facelift models imo with darker plastics giving it a better look.

Also, there was some extra insulation added to the facelift models so there is a little less road / engine noise in the cabin in these models.

Other than that and some minor changes to the grill / lights, the car is pretty much the same. That model you are looking at also looks to be the Comfort model which means it doesn't have the following:
    - Climate Control
    - Steering Wheel Controls for stereo
    - Cruise Control

However, if these are not important to you and the mileage / history checks out, it looks to be a nice car and they are a nice car to drive.

(I am picking up a 2006 model this weekend so have test drove a few)

Good luck with your car hunt.......

Actually, just took another look at the ad and it says that it is the Touring model although I have seen some of the Mazdas advertised incorrectly. Check whether it has steering controls or not to see if it is the touring model. Unusual to see one though without alloy wheels, may be no harm though on our roads...

yeah thanks man i know all about the facelift but the price increase is pretty big from 05 to 06. also, i know its rare to see a touring without alloys but i looked up on the specs and its actually only the sport that has alloys as standard. i rang him last night anyway and he said it has cruise control:cool:

Touring definitely had 15" alloys as standard (I had one). Sport Touring had better alloys (and sunroof?).

I was driving the fathers 07 Mazda 6 diesel for the past few days while waitin on a few bits for my own car. Nice comfortable car on the road, bit of poke in it too for overtaking, just a nice cruiser. Seats could do with a bit more back support IMO, long journeys can take a bit of a toll. I drove it from Limerick to Waterford and back yesterday to collect a part and I had a bit of twinge in my lower back after.

I googled the phone number and that's what comes up, he appears to be a dealer alright, wonder what he's hiding?

maybe he's been trying to sell it by his garage for a while but couldnt, so put it as a private sale on donedeal so he wouldnt have to offer a warranty but sell it cheaper?

A great car the 6. One of the most underrated motors of the previous decade in my opinion. In petrol form it's got great looks, superb Corolla like reliability, balanced and controlled handling, space for a family, a decent image and low overall running costs. Stick a decent set of wheels on one and you've got a very pretty, beautifully proportioned saloon, hatch or estate that'll still look the business in years to come. A proper old school Jap car.
I'd donate a bollock for an MPS. :P

thanks guys but id still rather hear some opinions on the possible problem above?
