Walking/Jogging

How's it going over this side of Boards??:D

I'm new here, so go easy! I only have one real question about fitness and that. I want to do some form of exercise, and walking is great as I can do it whenever, ya know as opposed to training with a team at a certain time, I don't want to have to be places at specific times every week, so I just walk whenever I feel like it.

But basically I realise that walking, unless I do a serious amount of it, won't get me too far! So the last night I had a busy evening ahead of me, and I wanted to get a walk in, but I only had half an hour and that wouldn't be worth much. So I tried to jog it instead, its just I get so out of breath I can't keep it up at all!! So I decided to walk for 2 mins, jog for 1, just until I get fit enough to do it the other way round, or jog for 1 min and walk for 30 secs.

I'm just wondering will this help me get fitter faster, doing the walk/jog? I'm new to this kind of stuff! I should also mention I'm anaemic and on iron tablets, which I think kind of doesn't help in the "keeping fit" thing, that's why I lose my breath so easily! That and the lack of fitness! (Although when I was training 3 times a week I seemed to be getting more unfit, where breathing was concerned:o!)

    So any advice for me??

Hi there if your looking into starting jogging I recommend the couch 2 5k its a 9 week programme that is designed to build ya up to running 5k its 3 runs a week starts of 1 min intervals of jogging and over the weeks builds up. Im on week 7 of the programme before it I couldnt run at all and now can run 25 mins without stopping. Theres a thread in the athletics training logs on here. And a great website coolrunnings.com

    +1 on the C25K program.

Would probably suit you as it takes 30-40 mins max and is a structured progam towards getting running again. (Or for the first time!!)

Take a read through the Couch to 5k thread as mentioned by the previous poster.

I on Week 5 Day 2 and it's killing me!!!!
(But I'm enjoying it and have no intention of giving up yet!!)

Another +1 for the couch to 5k programme. I could barely run for a minute this time last year, and now can jog 5k. It's a nice build-up to being able to jog for 30 minutes at a time, instead of going out and feeling disheartened when you can only manage a couple of minutes.

Thanks so much for the recommendation everyone! I checked out couch to 5k and it seems perfect for what I want! I went out yesterday and bought proper runners and i'm starting the programme tonight, I'm really looking forward to it after reading everybody's stories on the other thread:)! Thanks again!
