Hoepfully this thread does not come across as negative. Cos it is aiming to do exact opposite. Basically I get frustrated when people give excuses for not being or getting in shape. Maybe if everyone posted the feeble excuses people might not come on this board and spout them off every couple hours! So as I said it not meant be negative, its kinda reverse pyshcology.....Ill start it off.....
    • I dont have time to eat something healthy. My God this statement is my pet hate. So you have time to go into centra and get a breakfast roll but not to grab some fruit or a boiled egg or get food ready night before???
    • I am not naturally skinny. Note- You are not naturally four stone overweight either.

    "I don't like sweat"

    "Running doesn't suit me"

2 real excuses I have heard in a plaintive, despairing voice.

    'The scales are broken'

'Don't like it, can't do it'

    'I'm broken'

    'I'm going home!'

'I can feel my belly wobble when I walk..'

'but my boobs are in the way!' (when attempting to powerclean)

'...but there are starving children in Africa!' (whilst overloading on pancakes)

'that extra 2kg is ALLL muscle'

    - Me:D

    I could write a book.....

One I use and I hear my friends using now that I am making an effort
" Well you have to live as well"
but really I wont if I don't keep my fat ass moving

and the one that drives me crazy - there's only 3,6,7,42 points in whatever it is you are justifying eating ...

Hahaha, I've heard so many people say this!

and also 'its easy for you, you're skinny' gets on my nerves - a lot of people work very hard to look the way they do - it's not always easy!

I didn't get a great night's sleep last night so I won't have the energy for a good workout. (I use this one a lot less these days.)

But Creme Eggs are only available for like 3 months a year! ('Tis the season!)

Rest is really important after working out
Yeah I know but you trained five days ago

The machines are safer than the free weights
No they arent ya plank. They are EASIER not safer.

I worked hard today so derserve a treat

I wont eat again for the rest of the day
This is said in reasoning for eating 12 spuds, a plate of chips, five sausages and three fried eggs.

    "I have a slow metabolism"

Amazing that even though having a slow metabolism is super rare, everyone knows many people who would claim to be those people with that super rare affliction :)

This one never fails to get me into a rage:
I've tried absolutely everying but haven't lost a thing

Normally spouted from work colleges coming back from a cavery lunch while tucking into a pack of crisps and a bottle of coke.

Wearing shapewear and dark baggy clothes is slimming

    - No its not. Diet and exercise are slimming

    'I don't have the time'

The last 2 hours you have watched Home and Away, Ellen De Generes and Oprah. That, to me, constitutes about 3 decent workouts. Plenty of time in my eyes!

"I'll start hitting the gym once I finish my exams, then I'll have the time"

Seriously, you don't have 3 hours a week???? Bet you'd get more out of your study sessions if you went to the gym

I have a friend who has been paying for a membership for Westwood for the last 3 years. He'll admit himself that he's been less than 20 times in that time.

"I'm going out drinking on Saturday, so there's no point going to the gym on Friday as I'll just be undoing it all on Saturday night - I also won't go on Sunday cause I'll be hungover"

An interesting experience was doing charity bag packing in supermarkets a couple of years ago. I noticed that the phrase "you are what you eat" is very true. The overweight people were buying exactly what you'd expect an overweight person to be buying (i.e. junk). The slim, healthy people were buying exactly what you'd expect them to buy (i.e. healthy food)

There are exceptions. I'm naturally very slim. I can not exercise and live on junk and not put on any weight.

In recent years I try to eat healthier and am going to start the 'couch to 5k' soon.

    It can be bad,
Although I've learned to plan my program around that time, I go really hard for 2 weeks when I know my strength is at it's highest. It is just being in tuned to your body, work within your limitations.

    But back on topic...
"I don't like exercising."...really like they've tried every type of exercise there is out there known to man and know for a fact they don't like any of them.

I'm taking it easy to avoid injury so I'll just wait another week to do my 1/2 mile walk again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭Doolee

    Lol!
In fairness though...I've probably used all of those excuses at one time or another, but its still so funny.

A friend commented that its important to keep your salt intake up while munching on a bag of crisps! (Yeah, important to encourage a little cholesterol!)

"Ive tried every single diet, The cabbage soup diet, and the Atkins, and nothing works."

Girls who say, "I dont want to get all muscley".

At work one day a pretty famous actress asked me how to tone her butt cheeks, but not her legs or anywhere else! (Wha!)

And my absolute total pet hate:
    I dont like any vegetables.

For feck sake, youre not 5! Eat them!!!

"weightwatchers doesnt work for me".......I then later that evening was looking for a mug in the kitchen and found an entire cuboard FULL of just crisps and chocolate

"Finish your plate, there are starving children in the world"

I blame the Mammy for that one but then every mother in Ireland has probably used it. :D

Portion control is important and to be checked and made a habit

Along with propagating the notion that a dinner's not a dinner if it doesn't contain at least 4 big **** off potatoes.

Chips cooked in oil = a rare treat.
Spuds with generous amounts of butter = necessary for survival.

"my boss was in my case I've had a **** day"

All been used in my presence but the clincher is

    "i don't have time"

Many excuses are not obvious when you don't suffer. Some are very stupid and some have reasoning behind them.

Jesus, I'm struggling to imagine, who do you all be hearing this moaning from? Like, what is your relationship to this person that they wouldn't be embarrased to say this to you and they'd expect you to even care...

A lazy client that wasnt lazy for long ha. Still big into the gym to this day, it adds merit to the old expression "treat em mean, keep em keen".

My brother who is 26 and overweight uses the excuse,
I dont want to get a heart attack by jogging,

    Jokes on him really

I genuinely used to think that I just didn't have the right physique, genes, whatever for running, because I could walk for hours but couldn't run to save my life. Turned out I just needed to practice :o
Also used to tell myself that if I swam 20 lengths it would be ok to get fish and chips.
Have used so many excuses in this thread, it's embarassing! Getting better though.
My pet hate, and one I haven't used, is 'I've tried everything, nothing works'. Well, it won't work if you don't stick to it longer than a week!
