    Inspired by another thread.
Well, would you give your seat up for a pregnant woman? Old woman or man? Someone on crutches? Someone holding a small child?

I would. It's just manners in my book.

Yes because I was raised to have good manners.

Yes, it's costs nothing and makes ya feel good.

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

Yes, because i was brought up and not dragged up.

Yes to old person. No to pregnant person.

    Why not a pregnant person?

Surely you mean a pregnant woman....and why the hell not??

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

I am a bit wary about the pregnant people thing. I have seen it backfire when the lady was just heavy.

But definitely for old people or women that are obviously pregnant.

pregnant women yes, old people can go **** themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,400 ✭✭✭✭Turtyturd

Pregnant women yes...I joked in the other thread I wouldn't. Old people no because the vast majority of them are ignorant, bitter, grumpy sh*ts.

However I sit upstairs so I don't look like an ass, cos most of them can't make it up there to look for my seat.

    Yes.
    Someone holding a small child?

    No.
Anyone who brings a child onto a bus will get nothing from me but cold hard glares. (Unless, by some miracle, the child shuts up and behaves itself for the bus journey...)

I would really. You have to catch their eye first and do a bit of an eye swivel (to them, then to the seat, then back to them). If they don't think you're coming on to them, the seat is theirs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,191 ✭✭✭✭Latchy

Of course , it's quite the norm ( in most civilised countrys ) to do just that regardless of who needs it ie, old ladys ,pregnant women etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,042 ✭✭✭stevejr

But there's nothing more annoying than giving up your seat only for the recipient to not even have the grace to acknowledge the action. Old people have done this to me a number of times....very ****ing annoying.

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

In fairness, they are probably concentrating on making it to the seat on the moving bus without braking their hip.

If an old person is capable of being out of the nursing home and onto a bus.......then they are capable of standing in the middle of the aisle as seats are first come first served basis. Tough titties....apparently, they had it hard growing up, well if thats so, then a bit more standing wont hurt!

Preggo's....................sitting on things is what got you into that predicament in the first place, for shame!

Yes, of course id give up my seat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭xoxyx

Once, when I was about 11, I gave my seat to an older lady. She gave me a pound (the money kind) as she left the bus. I've never forgotten it. What a lovely thing to do!! (Not the money, but the gesture.)

    Always.

Once I did it in France on a train and I thought yer one was going to marry me by the look of astonishment and happiness on her face.

Well if they're that frail, then they'd would've/should've have been in a wheelchair...but seriously some old people can be surprisingly ill-mannered.

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭Khyra24

Yes, I'd give up my seat for anyone who wants to sit because I am easy to bully...

yes absolutely.. get annoyed when i see people go out of their way, looking out a window, or basically doing anything to avoid eye contact so they can pretend they don't notice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 624 ✭✭✭Crasp

I generally just don't bother to sit down on public transport, even if there are free seats. It saves the hassle and awkwardness of giving up the seat. I'm young and fit, I don't need to sit down.

Not necessarily! Old people might have okayish mobility but due to osteoporosis end up breaking their hip. There is a really high mortality rate with hip fractures, esp. women. Plus, the elderly are shít scared of going into hospital.

...You get ill-mannered people of all ages.

Oldies get too bad a time. They're alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭craggles

No, unless they're injured or on crutches or heavily heavily pregnant.

Fat people can f**k off. Old people can definitely **** off, they get on buses for free and they want to sit down too? Get the boat

I generally do, it's in my nature to do so

but I can understand if people don't. a young person pays to get on the bus, an OAP doesnt.

Why don't I give up my seat to a pregnant woman? Because I don't want to. It's that simple. It has nothing to do with manners, it is personal choice. You either choose to do it or you don't. And I don't. Simple.

If any person were to ask me politely if I would mind giving up my seat then I would be more obliging but it shouldn't just be expected of people because you are pregnant or old.

I pay a fare when I get on a bus or train. When I use public transport I tend to get it at the earliest point possible so I can get a seat and travel comfortably, if I can do that then why can't someone who feels they are entitled to a seat because of their physical condition?

So you're saying you wouldn't offer your seat up for an elderly person on the bus - which could be their one trip outside of the house for the day or week even? And they encounter selfish people like yourself? Nice.

    Yes, I know.

I just see it a lot, as I sit down stairs at the back of the bus mostly. The poor dears, see the vacant seat and aim for it. There is nothing else on their minds other than getting their arse on that seat. :o

I cant stand lad's who have no manners when it comes to the women. Like hold the door for them, offer to carry their shopping if their struggling with it. It's not been a boyscout, it's called being a man.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 172 ✭✭padraig91

Perhaps to a pregnant person but not to an elderly person for two reasons

1:last time i tried to give my seat on a bus to an old person they said "oh im not that old am i?" meanwhile im thinking "yes you ****in are now sit down" and instead of taking the seat she stands right in front of me and she smells of old people and i wanted to throw up

2:there are old people on the back of the shreddies box and its really disgusting when ur trying to eat and they are on the back of the box holding shreddies (without gloves)...anyways after that advertising campaign i have little to no patience for old people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭tfitzgerald
