I just said "save my walrus" to someone in a conversation and they looked at me blankly.

All I remember of that show was the fart jokes... did they do other stuff in it as well?

Before Nickelodeon took control of it and told it's creator to fùck off it was a bizzare show that went very dark and violent. Most of the early stuff results in Ren suffering from psychosis and getting notions in his head to kill Stimpy.

Seeing it as a kid a lot of the stuff flew over my head but since I went back to the early seasons I love it's twisted nature. Crazy amount of innuendos and references that the creator would throw in even though kid's wouldn't get them. As a result of going too far with violence and references he ended up being fired and a different team were put in charge to dilute it.

I always loved those high-detailed drawings when they did a close-up of a face / etc. :pac:

A lot of the shows that were around when I was small were terrifying. Like the air conditioner killing himself :S

I watched it once as a kid and I didn't like it. The one I watched involved Stimpy feeding Ren his vomit.

Its a bit too out there. I do agree that kids are too sheltered today, though.

Ren and Stimpy is one of the finest animated shows of all time. That, and Pinkie and the Brain, put Family Guy et al to shame.

F*ckin' brilliant show! I always wanted a log for Christmas!

    Log rolls down stairs,
    rolls over your friends,
    rolls over your neighbour's dog.
It's good for a snack and fits on your back.
    It's Log, Log, Log!

    Log from Blammo!

Yeah but that was a joke and was never aired.

Invader Zim was pretty great too - although that's a lot more recent.

Ren and Stimpy was NEVER a kids show... it was always put on late, as I remember. It was about as much a kids show as South Park is

It started as a kids show (debuting alongside Doug and Rugrats) but AFAIK once the 1st series took off as a cult hit with an older audience they moved its tone (and broadcast time) to suit this audience (similar to how the SpongeBob film was written with people in their early to mid 20s in mind).

Never saw the appeal of it myself, not a patch on Pinky and the Brain, now there was a show written for both kids and adults. I only grasped many of the gags after I grew up such as their pisstake of Orson Welles and the Frozen Peas blooper reel.

Really? I'm shocked to hear it was once a genuine kids show

On the subject of Spongebob .. thats interesting, thanks Irish Halo :D.
Funny... they're saying similar recently, about a CBeebies show called "Rastamouse". It has an adult following who believe "cheese" is code for marijuana...

That was never aired. Merely a gag for the shows xmas party that slipped into the public domain.

That said tho I reckon was some sort of gay recruitment slant going on with that show. The title "Rainbow" , effeminate "George" , uber-camp Bungle, Zippy and his oral fixation etc etc ..... eh , not that there's anything wrong with that of course

When it first came on in the US, it aired on Sunday mornings. Unfortunately, it was at the same time as Mass, but if we were really quiet and my parents overslept, we could watch it. It was definitely weird and gross, but kids like that stuff. And the "Log" song is a classic!

Too right, was the good doctor going out with that wooden girl or what, the plots of that show were completely impenetrable, my mushy kiddie brain couldn't handle them at all. Awesome theme tune though.

Anyone ever seen the Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack? Now, that's some seriously surreal kids' programming. It's really bizarre.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,565 ✭✭✭southsiderosie

Looking back, Pee-Wee's Playhouse was completely bizarre, and had some very adult humor woven into it. And the set had to have been designed by someone on acid. Talking chairs and windows?

It's also hilarious that Laurence Fishburne played Cowboy Curtis.

Got a bit of news for you - Ren and Simpy is most certainly NOT a cartoon aimed at (or even appropriate for) children. It's firmly aimed at adults.

Back in the 90s I used to watch Ren and Stimpy after a few strong spliffs with my mates. It was brilliant to watch for a serious laugh - the Log from Blammo, Muddy Mudskipper, Don't wizz on the electric fence etc...:D:D:D

    Great cartoon!

    Great cartoon!

Ren & Stimpy started on Nickelodeon, a kids network. It came on right after Rugrats, which nobody would consider an "adult" cartoon. It was definitely aimed at kids, and a lot of parents were not happy about this.

I know I used to love that cartoon but to this day I have no idea what any of it was about. Had even forgot the name up until now!

I disagree. Animation-wise it was quality but other than that Ren and Stimpy wrecked my head.

    Absolutely adored ren & stimpy!!!
So different to anything I'd ever seen before, so dark and down right bizarre. Loved the animation too. It never moralised, it had no agenda other than to be harsh, disturbing and very very funny.

    Bump!
Forgot about these ones Happy Tree Friends, now I cant believe this is a kids cartoon show, total gross out and the most memorable theme tune ever.

wonder showzen and happy tree friends were always parodies of childrens cartoons aimed at adults. Its part of the joke, a bit like Drawn together using parodies of well known childrens characters.

Wondershowzen is a fantastic show, some real gems on it like:http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/118627/wondershowzen-he-bro.jhtml

I believe recently there was a news report that Kurt Cobain had written music for ren and stimpy before he was famous but they told him to F*** off.

well stuff is fairly sanitized now, been one big clean-up operation since way back i only found out recently the group Suicidal Tendencies played 'trip at the brain' on RTE childrens show jo maxi around '89, don't get me wrong but i don't think that could happen now? boybands would have been lynched back then, shít fluffed out in the mid '90s bigstyle and continues to do so, ren and stimpy was great

I don't remember this show, however i came onto this thread to say that they just don't make cartoons like they used to. James Bond Jr. FTW!!!

    Who remembers Alf?
He used to eat cats and was constantly trying to get the family cat as I remember.
Being a child and having a pet cat I found that disturbing.
That's not realy suitable for a childrens show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,389 ✭✭✭FTGFOP

Alf [...] not realy suitable for children.

What did you think of Hansel and Gretel? :P

I removed my thanks when I realised you were complaining about alf. Alf was great, I loved it growing up.

I liked the show. Sure if I didn't I wouldn't have remembered it decades later.
Even had the Alf pogs.
Just eating the family cat isn't realy suitable for a childrens show

You can add that thanks back
