Unless he's injured, Sherry being dropped for Fogarty is a disgrace.

I'd also love to see Dineen get another run of games, but it looks like the management don't have the cojones to drop Tuitupou and/or Mafi.

    I'd like to see:
    Du Preez, Varley, Buckley, Nagle, MOD, Leamy, TOD, Coughlan;
Stringer, ROG, Murphy, Tuitupou/Mafi, Gleeson, Hurley, Warwick

Bench: Fogarty , Hurley, Borlase, Ryan, Holland, Williams, Deasy, Zebo

Sherry and Murray should be in instead of Fogarty and Williams.

    Think Conor Murray is injured.

Mike Sherry looked extremely ropey after a collapsed scrum towards the end of the Treviso game on sunday. I imagine he picked up some sort of shoulder/head injury. He's smaller then I imagined.

Usually I'd agree with you but he has been out injured for a while and it's always good to see a fella back fit. I don't think he's as bad as is made out, though I'll admit his throwing is his weakness (can say the same for most Irish hookers these days). I'd say it's a chance for him to put himself in the shop window for other clubs, a move to Connacht might be ideal for him.

With Buckley confirmed as leaving I wonder who else will be on the way out?

Much Changed Munster Side To Face Edinburgh.
    17 February 2011, 11:55 am
    By The Editor

Only six players remain in the Munster starting XV from last weekend for Friday's Magners League clash with Edinburgh at Thomond Park Stadium (7.50pm).

Of that six, four retain their positions, Doug Howlett, Damian Varley, Tommy O'Donnell and James Coughlan with Lifeimi Mafi switching to outside centre to accommodate the move of Paul Warwick to inside centre from out-half where he played in Treviso.

Ronan O'Gara returns to the side as does Peter Stringer and Denis Leamy, who will captain the side while Mick O'Driscoll who led the Munster revival when introduced at the Stadio Monigo partners Donnacha Ryan in the second-row and Coughlan and O'Donnell rightlyretain their places in the backrow having impressed against Treviso.

Meanwhile Edinburgh who named their side yesterday, travel with a strong outfit that includes the Magners current leading try scorer Tim Visser and current Scotland squad members lock Scott MacLeod and number 8 Ross Rennie.

Tickets for the game are still available from the ticket office in Thomond Park Stadium, the Munster Rugby offices Tramore Road in Cork, from the Munster Rugby Stores in O'Connell St Limerick and Maylor St. Cork, from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide and online here.

Tickets for the game will be available to purchase at Thomond Park Stadium on the night.

    Munster:
    J Murphy, D Howlett, L Mafi, P Warwick, D Hurley, R O'Gara, P Stringer,
    W du Preez, D Varley, T Buckley, D Ryan, M O'Driscoll, D Leamy capt, T O'Donnell, J Coughlan.

    Replacements: D Fogarty, M Horan, S Archer, I Nagle, B Holland, D Williams, T Gleeson, S Zebo.

    Edinburgh:
    C Paterson, L Jones, B Cairns, J King, T Visser, D Blair, G Laidlaw capt,
    K Traynor, A Kelly, G Cross, S MacLeod, S Turnbull, F McKenzie, N Tatel, R Rennie.

    Replacements: A Walker, L Niven, D Young, A MacDonald, R Grant, N de Luca, S Webster, J Thompson.

    Referee: Nigel Owens.

Interesting selection. I'm happy to see Warwick at 12 and Leamy and Coughlan in their right positions.

As much as I don't rate them anymore, hopefully Horan and Fogarty will get gametime (as somefool implied above) to see if they can add value to the panel for the rest of the season.

Edinburgh are a poor enough side. If Munster don't give Paterson chances to kick goals and keep Visser quiet we should win comfortably IMO.

    Munster by 10-15.

PW played 12 at Connacht last year when Cusack was blooded at fly-half.

He has plenty of experience at 12. It seems that McGahan has completely rowed back from his experimental team last week. Would like to see Nagle and Holland get half an hour. Good to see Nigel owens reffing, might let the front rows get on with it.

Hopefully Munster should take this comfortably but then again with the form of late, you never know. Still, Munster by 10.

    Wait one second.............

    Referee: Nigel Owens.

    I'll be there!
    working of course...

Whats the story with Horan? He made a comeback from that bad injury ages ago and I haven't seen him since.

    Whats the story with Horan?

    He's not very good.

I think Munster should win this handy enough. I like the look of that backline and I don't think that Edinburgh team are up to much.

Munster should win this, strong enough side.

Question though, would Warwick be put at 12 if he was not leaving at the end of the season?

I think his selection at 12 is to see if it would work in the challenge cup/magners playoffs. I've yet to be impressed by a performance of a Munster 12 this season so hopefully he will do well there.

Would they not be better served trying someone like Deasy there? Warwick will be off in a couple of months and Munster will be in the market for another NIQ 12. As unlikely as it is, the answer could be staring them in the face in the shape of Deasy or Barnes. They won't have a better game to try someone out in. They'll have a lot of first team players around them to guide them through against a weakened Scottish side in Thomond. Warwick has played 12 for Munster previously and on a number of occasions for Connacht. They should have a fair idea of what he offers there.

They've 4 more games to try a ROG/Warwick 10/12 axis ahead of the Brive game. I don't think they'll ever go with it anyway though in a big game.

A few loose passes from ROG so far. Some good stuff from them at times but they don't seem to be able to turn it into points the way they should.

Very telepathic he nearly had an intercept. Also had a defensive lapse again. I get frustrated watching him because he tends not to make mistakes but when he does they're always the same mistakes. Mafi has been very dangerous so far and Varley's having a good game.

Good old Dougie saved my bacon. I had more than 19.5 points in the 1st half and Munster to score more than 12 in the 1st half - but he cut it damn close. :D

2 forward pass tries for Munster. The first one was marginal but how the hell did the ref not see that one??? Great to see Horan back btw

Edinburgh have been VERY poor in the second half. There have been at least 2 big gaps in the Munster defence at different times where Edinburgh were on the attack that they didn't take advantage of. They seem to be too keen to pass the ball and get it out wide and they're not taking opportunities in the middle of the park that are coming up.

The first two tries were marginally forward, I'd understand the mistake but that last try was so completely forward that I am shocked that not one but two officials missed it.

The pass that lead to their try was certainly not marginal.

Is Edinburghs Scrum really that bad?
Havent seen a Munster scrum perform that well in ages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,767 ✭✭✭✭molloyjh

To be honest if I were a Munster fan I'd be very worried about that. They were only missing 3 of their first team and Edinburgh were shockingly poor in the second half. It shouldn't have taken 25 mins to break them down and the scoreline should have been more convincing. Munster just seem to have a very serious issues scoring tries at the moment.

I wouldn't read too much into that to be fair. I mean Leinster struggled to beat Aironi by 5 points - a team who had lost 12 from 12!!
Munster are top of the pile - by a clear margin - and are srtuggling to score tries..... I'm happy enough with that to be honest.
