I've been using one of these for months now, paid around the same price for a used one on ebay. I'm on the road every day and have yet to fault it, I use it with the tom tom app. Picks up GPS as soon as the app loads.. It's great!!

How is this better than a stand alone dashboard mount?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

how is it for calls ??
have a parrott might move it to her car if this was any good for calls
    thanks

It has a GPS module built in, same that u get in a std GPS system.. more powerfull than the one in the iphone so it's more accurate, which it is..

As for the hands free, it works but it's not as good as a parrot kit (I have one in my van)... It's ok for the odd bit of use but I'm on the phone all day and find the parrot much better

New iPhone 5 is rumored to have a 4" display so it might not fit.

Also need a piece of plastic for the iPhone 4 which you can get free from within the app.

No data usage unless you use the google search from within the app to find a POI it does not have.

Tomtom for iphone is really good and Ive used loads of different ones ;)

Beware. TomTom is great sat nav software (possibly the best out there) but it uses Teleatlas maps, which are far from complete for Ireland, and never will be completed. Grand for all the main roads, but forget about street level detail for large parts of the country

The other map company, Navteq, is owned by Nokia. Nokia provide FREE software (ovimaps) and FREE worldwide maps for ever for anyone using a Nokia smartphone. A far superior and free solution, but I guess Apple phone users don't mind paying for anything and everything :D

Apple users don't like precision or accuracy - it conflicts with their feelings about how things really are if you lift the veil.......:D

I've found the Teleatlas maps to be fairly good, although most of my driving is around Leinster... It's better than the navtec maps on the Garmin unit I have tho. Although I'm sure they've updated it since then..

Just picked one up today in argos. Can't see how it could be worth 120 euro..
It does seem fairly strong and well built but you could buy a sat nav for cheaper then 120 euro..

I suppose for less then 50 it's not bad value.

How would Google Maps Navigation stack up against these two? its free also on Android and I believe iPhone too
Seems spot on to me and has street view built in - lots of little extras also and it will cache Maps offline on an Android phone so no data charge (by the way if you have a smartphone I think a data package is a no brainer so not sure why everyone is worried about data charges - even if your abroad just buy a sim card for the country your in and include a data package with it)

With Google Maps and a generic car holder from eBay and a Bluetooth visor kit you have the lot for about 30 quid

    That's another €55

    What's not true, sharkman?

The last time I looked, teleatlas officially stated they had no intention to cover Ireland completely. Has this changed? Any linkies would be appreciated. I really like the TomTom software but the last time I used it the maps were crap (was a couple of years ago)

I know for sure that navteq do cover Ireland completely. And they issue new maps ever quarter (free of course with Nokia)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭brav

Previously I would have agreed regards Navteq>Tele Atlas, and even to this day I always pick navteq or tele atlas, its why I would have always picked garmin, however having looked at both are practically the same maps, I think they may have got base maps from OSI or something because both have nearly all minor roads now.

You can check current tele atlas map at http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/index.php

Also on iphone and android Navigon's maps use navteq maps, so you are not restricted to tele atlas maps on iphone

Thanks for that. And to confirm, that teleatlas map does NOT have my current address in Lucan (Dublin) where I've lived for 11 years...

Navteq maps DO have my current address.

do Google not use Teleatlas maps data?
I think they do - see bottom of any Google maps screen

is your house on Google maps?
If so I believe that data would have been from Teleatlas

That is strange, as I always check where my parents are from, small road in the middle of no where in Kerry, didn't think big towns etc would be missing anything except new roads

They are based on Tele Atlas but according to http://www.google.com/intl/en-us/help/legalnotices_maps.html they also use other sources like OS for UK etc, can't see any mention for Ireland only Tele Atlas

There are a number of free mapping apps for the iPhone which will work just fine with this dock.

It's a good deal, about half price. I actually don't use it for GPS at all. I use it primarily as an iPhone dock to charge the phone and play music through the stereo, but it's more than capable of handsfree talking as well.

It is expensive, but it's the neatest and simplest integrated dock/auxin/handsfree kit out there for the iPhone.

Sent a missing road request to Google last year on their help forum and here is the reply I got

Google's data provider for maps of Ireland is Tele Atlas. You can report the issue directly to Tele Atlas at http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/index.php

Could someone who has bought this please tell me whether it is the Proclip installation variety of the dock (pictured below) , or the windscreen suction variety? The picture on the Argos website shows the Easyport mount windscreen suction but the description says 'Secure docking, works with Proclip mounting system. Secure docking, works with Proclip mounting system'. I am driving quite far to pick one up tomorrow but I'm hoping the picture of the dock is true because Proclip installation would be added cost.

Hi I got mine yesterday and it was the window suction cup 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,262 ✭✭✭Vertakill

Yeah it's the suction cup on my one.

However, it comes with an extra circular little disk thing that has a sticky back on it.
You can stick that to most things on your dash, and then stick the suction cup to the disk which allows you to attach the kit to most surfaces on your dash, even the ones that don't work that well with suction cups.

I've the sticky-back disk stuck onto the back of the cubby hole I have in my car, and I can then stick the car kit suction cup on to that and it works perfectly.

The latest statement from Tomtom states :" countries fully covered (99.9%): England, Wales, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland" Thats on UK& ROI map . I use it everyday and can tell you that there is very little wrong with the maps .

Right now there is still one left at each of these stores:

    Letterkenny
    Limerick Childers Road
    Monaghan
    Killarney (2 left)

I got one in Tallagh last Friday. I checked on Thursday and they had none in stock, then on Friday they had 1 so reserved it. But etcetc is saying was another in stock today, maybe lots reserved and not being collected so coming back into stock.

Worth checking Argos regularly to see if any become available.

Am I right in thinking that this will work with my itouch to give me gps in the car and that I don't have to purchase the TomTom software but can use on of the free ones ?

Navfree is supposed to be good. Based on OSM, which are pretty much the most up to date maps of Ireland you can get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,262 ✭✭✭Vertakill

Yeah Navfree is what I use. It's surprisingly good. Was expecting something mediocre but it's one of the better ones I've used, including actual Sat Navs.

You can find it by searching for Navfree on app store and it's listed as "UK & Ireland" on your phone.
    The logo looks like this:

Navfree downloads the maps. Presumably because it uses OSM, map updates should also be free.
