i have this one and have 3tb of drives in it. have it about 14 months now i think, i love it, its been going 24/7 since and also i use the bit torrent client on it and just let it work away without needing the pc/laptop on

    great price also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 463 ✭✭garion

    WOW, that's a great price.
I've also had one of these for the last 14 months, again with 3TB of data, and it's been brilliant. Would highly recommended it as an entry NAS. It is my first NAS and can see me using it for another couple of years before upgrading.

For those looking for the drives, I've got 2 of these. Not sure how good or bad they are but they've worked really well for me so far.

According to discussion on http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/d-link-2bay-nas-enclosure-was-155-now-49-99-dabs/877542 it works with xbox and ps3 so must be DNLA compliant.

Not the newest version. See below link:

D-Link ShareCenter Pulse was just released before Christmas and it basically the same but is a newer model and looks better.

I bought one with 2 Samsung Green 2TB drives and its excellent.

Although it is a small bit dearer

This looks class, as i have a SATA looking for a good home.
    But,
Could someone please just very simply explain to me what this does?
I have a PS3, and a PC and laptop and a wireless router, all connected.

So this gets it own IP address so i could leave it connected to a bit torrent to download away to its hearts content, and then just stream the files to my PC or laptop.

    Is this correct?
Plus it will share its content amongst the laptop and PC over the network?
Sorry for the basic queastions but i've been try to find out the exact purpose of NAS, but not having much luck...

    Ta....

Class, but doesn't the PS3 not really support AVI etc, or has that changed?
    Thanks.

It plays all my DIVX avi's just fine, MP3's too. You just enable UPNP on the NAS and the PS3 will find it automatically :)

I have 2 of these boxes (one 2 Tb and one 4 TB) and have them both hacked so that i can log into them over ssh or telnet and make them do as i want.
If your getting one , install FFP.

I have mine set up with Transmission Torrent Client and a little script called Automate that goes to RSS feeds and auto downloads any new TV shows on my list.... it also saves them to the individual folder i specify so it means all my shows stay organised and up to date.
My iphone can remotely log into it and start a download as well if im on the road - so its ready when i get back.

I Highly recommend this - i also play all the movies over the network through my PS3 and it works flawlessly.

If you know linux even a little and arent afraid to mess around with it , these devices can be amazing , even in standard format, its pretty good.

Im only gutted that they dropped so much in price - i paid double !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭user1842

Word of warning the device has only been tested with a max storage of 4TB (2TB single drives).

I wanting to get 3TB drives and emailed D-Link. They said not too as no testing has been done on them. I know there is an 2.1TB limit for 32bit controllers.

Theres a forum on this device that gives you walk throughs on adding customised scripts to the device - anyone getting one should really take a peek if u want it to do a little bit extra on the device.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,470 ✭✭✭Mr_Roger_Bongos

I'm always intruiged by these devices because i like central storage, but seriously, how much content do you lads have?!

Are we talking full series of TV shows and hundreds of films? I don't understand why you'd want to stream everything through every device.

I have itunes on my laptop, update the ipod through that.

I have a 2 TB firewire hard drive for films and backup and if i want to watch a film i just transfer it off the hard drive and plug the laptop into the TV.

Is it just for convenience of not having to do that step?

Do the owners spend alot of time moving stuff to the thing?

Apologies for these stupid questions, i've always just thought one of these things is more trouble and cost that it's worth, maybe i'm just old fashioned!

Just ordered on there, cheers op. Have been looking for one for a while at a decent price and am not too bothered if its an older model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭DjTaz

I have 1.3 TB of TV shows and about 1 TB of movies

I do have the box for convienience more than anything.
I dont have to go searching for a TV show cause they auto download as soon as they are released which means they are there when i want to watch something.

The fact that i have a remote web login for torrents also means i can log in with the iphone and start a download no matter where i am in the world , and itll be there when i get home.

It also means i dont have to have a PC on and tied up as the box does it all.

I got mine as I wanted to stream all my movies/TV shows to my TV and my other computers (latop and desktop). Before I had an external hard-drive connected to my desktop which was on constantly basically acting as one.

Also I got it to back up all my files. I have a RAID 1 arrangement with 2TB mirrored. Its great to know that all my files are safe even if a drive fails.

Normally I'd do a bit of tweaking of things I get, but I'm getting this as a backup to main server. Being able to connect a USB hard drive would be handy though (I don't think it supports it out of the box).

Mr_Roger_Bongos, My server is 5TB (5 x 1TB). Tv and movies would be the biggest. A HD movie can be 4gb to 10gb. A HD tv episode can be 1GB each. I also keep my games discs backed up on the server. So I don't have to fetch disks or risk damaging them. I just watch the movies on the PC (Connected to 40" TV) so I just stream over network. It's mostly for convenience.

The DNS -320 does support this, copied my 2TB collection last weekend, very handy

I tried the USB connection and it works great. I dont use it much , but initially it was handy to tranfer files.

I know this is off the point but what's the point of blu ray if a HD movie is approx 6GB. Dual layer DVD would do 9.6GB???

Theres a big argument about that on the Ps3 forums ... most games are only 8GB ... though the new need for speed is 26 gigs !! , but they are asking why do they not use DVD's instead of bluray ... no one has a proper answer.

I was wondering that myself this week. Got a free tool to convert bluray to 4.3gb dvd size at full hd resolution. Some Ps3 games are huge but they are uncompressed, that size could be brought down easily.

Can you use a usb hard drive as permanent storage. When I upgrade my server I'll put 2 of the 1TB drives in. May not be enough so usb would be handy.

Yeah you can use it as perminant storage.
You may need to create a symbolic link to the drive or folder if u are using the media streaming as it wont display that , but with a bit of patience its easy enough to do.

I have one drive mapped to the second drive on mine so that the media streamer can get to both drives easily.

Yes you can attached a USB drive to the DNS-320 and use it as storage. It comes up as a different volume.

The actual movie itself on a retail Bluray disc is typically about 20-30GB in size.

A 6GB rip is lower in resolution and lower in quality. You might not see it and if you don't then good for you, but there's definitely a big difference.

Are you 100% sure on this? I heard that using the correct compression HD movie sizes are about 6GB.

I have sampled Star-trek blu ray and Star-trek HD rip (4.6GB) and I cannot see any difference between them on a 42inch LED display

A 6gb isn't always lower in resolution. Quality maybe but there is plenty of room to compress without it being noticeable. I'd generally get 8gb or 10gb myself

I'm currently using a removable 500 gig usb 2.5 inch drive with my Acer Revo 3160 running XBMC. I keep my media on a usb 1.5 Tb RAID box. For convenience's sake I'm considering getting a DNS-320. I like library mode in XBMC but for this to work properly I have to rename my files as most downloaded stuff doesn't follow the correct naming conventions. I assume I can use my favourite renaming program from any computer on the network to rename files downloaded with the bitorrent client?

Also is it possible to access it remotely with the iPhone using a VNC app (already have one of these) out of the box or do I need to do a bit of Linuxing?

    Thanks

I cannot comment on the re-namer your quoted but TVrename works perfectly.

The DNS-320 has a web interface and I can access it no problem from my Android 2.2 browser on my phone.

Ajaxplorer is built in too so you can have volume access via a browser but for some reason it only allows access to one folder of the volume (emailed D-Link about this, im sure its just a glitch)

Note that the DNS-323 and the DNS-320 are different devices (basically the same functionality though), The DNS-320 being the newer of the two

Just did a little googling and while it's possible to access the bittorrent client on an iphone apparently you can't paste a torrent URL into the DNS - 323 browser. Can anyone confirm that this is the case? Not exactly a deal breaking but a bit of a pain in the hole.

Yeah DNS332 - theres a funplug for turning the usb port thats normally for a printer into a standard USB port and plugging a USB drive into it - works fine.

I have it on my iphone using transmission (not the standard client on it) and i can cut and paste in the torrent no problems from my iphone. No problems showing you any time if ur in dublin - its very easy - standard cut and paste.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭digitaldr

Sounds good - any idea if it would work with the standard client? I have minimal knowledge of Linux but I'm sure I could figure out how to hack it but am a bit short of time at the moment. Also need to convince the wife that I need yet another gadget - maybe I could tell her that it uses a hell of a lot less electricity than my torrenting PC!

haha - never tried the standard client , but id say thats what they are talking about when they post about it.
To be honest , the best bit is when you set it up to have automatic on it ... mine auto downloads pretty much all the TV shows within 15 minutes of them becoming available online - the standard client cant do that.

Imagine if she had 90210, glee , desperate housewives (insert other girly sh...tuff), all ready for her without having to ask u to get it ... its for her as much as its for you :p

If u get one and need a hand on the linux side, shout me any time.

Is UPNP result in HD better at streaming HD media over wireless N than a mapped network drive?

Mind if I ask what XBCM skin you use on Acer Revo? This is similar to my set up and In find AEON a little sluggish.

BTW you should check out sickbeard instead of therenamer.

digitaldr i just spotted those questions in the quote.

To rename a file , i just log in over the network \\movies (resolves to 192.168.1.8 for me) and rename as normal.

VNC wont work from your iphone because the linux on the machine isnt GUI based and is all text based. You can log in over telnet or SSH if you know how to use command line linux.

You can however log into it over specific ports (transmission uses tcp 9091) so if you open your router for port 9091 and set up a nat (network address translation) from the outside IP to the internal IP on that port , you will be able to get to the device from your iphone in order to add/check torrents.

An alternative to this deal: Currys has in the clearance section the Linksys NMH300 for 100E (down from 200E) with a 500Gb HDD. Its also takes two hdds has two usbs but no torrent. Saw it this evening in Galway but its probably nationwide. Maybe it of use to someone.

I'm just using the default skin - conflence (seems to be the most user friendly for my non-geek family!). Runs very smoothly

The newer Amazon model has free delivery at £70.58 - about €83.78.
