I have a christening party coming up at home and I want to do it as cheap as possible as I am a cheapskate.. I have a couple of empty smirnoff bottles and I was thinking of filling them up with the stuff from Lidl... There are a couple of brands in lidl (forget the names). As the people drinking it will drink it with coke or whatnot they shouldn't notice any difference. Will the lidl stuff do the trick? I don't want anyone to go blind.

I recommend trying out a few bottles before the christening.

If people are regular drinkers of vodka then they will know the differance in taste and you will just look like a cheap bast0rd. But you are a cheap bast0rd, so go for it.

They won't go blind, unless they pour it in their eyes.

Don't put it into Smirnoff bottles though, people will tell the difference and then they'll realise your a con artist as well as a cheapskate!

It'll get the job done alright!

Why bother? There are almost always specials on vodka if you look around.

Tesco was doing Russian Standard for 15squids and O'Briens is doing Litre of Absolut for 20.

Lidl vodka mightn't do it, but a lodda vodka will make it a night to remember.

You can tell the difference, but it'll still get you drunk

Remind me not to go to your house. I'd rather be asked to bring my own booze than be conned into drinking re-bottled Albanian ethylene.

I've got some bottles of paint stripper I'm not using in the shed out back OP. You can have them if you want.

Just buy a naggin of Smirnoff, divide it into the empty bottles evenly then fill the rest bottle with water and somehow everything will work out fine.

if you're gonna be a cheapskate, at least be an honest cheapskate and leave it in the lidl bottles, don't go trying to trick people into thinking they're drinking something else. they probably won't mind anyway

Smirnoff is shyte vodka anyway, if they complain tell them it's proper Polish vodka and they should know better, throw in a few of these :rolleyes: and walk away. They'll soon be singing it's praises to the next person that complains allowing them to get the feeling of superiority they thought you had.

You might be able to buy in a case of really good Polish vodka for cheap over the internet??

What are you going to do for the cola? I assume Coca Cola & Pepsi are out of the question.

Course it will do the trick. Good vodka is distilled more often than the crap. Also good vodka is usually 40% and won't freeze in the freezer whereas the cheap crap is 37.5% and will freeze. At a country club where I worked years ago we used to fill up all the Smirnoff, Finlandia and Absolut bottles with this muck called Popov. Nobody knew the difference. Everyone drinks Vodka with a mixer anyway or in a cocktail with other spirits. Only the barbarians from Eastern Europe drink the stuff neat.

Christening party? Ususally they can't tell the difference until they're at least 15 months old so you'll probably be fine.

if its better than the Glens stuff then its good! :)

I'd be curious to know what it tastes like. I was at a party a while back and there was some quare stuff in Smirnoff bottles. I couldn't drink it or neither could another girl at my table. It was like nail varnish remover.

I only ever buy Smirnoff...though in saying that, the last two bottles I bought up the north didn't taste the same as usual. I don't know if it's my imagination or if a terrible hangover I had a few months ago, damaged my vodka tasting buds:confused:.

Haven't the time to wait for stuff to arrive, but would get a case if there was a good discount. Would come in handy for the summer and Xmas.

I think you're giving many regular vodka drinkers FAR too much credit.

Anyone who drinks vodka regularly will be able to tell the difference. Nothing wrong with the Lidl vodkas though in my opinion, they do the job cheaply and cheerfully.

They had a vodka taster on Mythbusters before. He couldnt tell the difference between the good vodka and the rubbish. So yeah roll with the Lidl Vodka.

Love when they do that kind of thing with "wine experts" and they invariably fúck up. :D

I don't think there's anything wrong with Lidl vodka, but I think it'd be better to leave it in it's own bottle. Even just to avoid an accusation if somebody did cop the swap.

gross, lidl vodka.just as bad as tesco brand :P i got a litre of smirnoff in dunnes yesterday for 20euro.nice wannnn :)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭Poor Craythur

Made skittle vodka in first year of college with this cheap shíte from Dunnes. Drank most of it myself at the first house party I ever threw. Two day hangover... :(

I drink own brand vodka often enough. I would say if I got it at a mates from a Smirnoff bottle it might raise an eyebrow but I would imagine I wouldn't think on it in a social situation.

I reckon chances are you'll get away with it though as people would probably put the sharper taste down to it being self poured ie stronger..

you could ring your guests before they arrive, say you are very busy - ask could they do you a favour and pick up a few bottles of smirnoff.

Then just never give them the money for it.....:)

    everybody wins...

Who the hell is gonna be able to tell the difference in fairness, and i'm sure only a certain amount of people will drink Vodka, if it was beer i'd say something but Vodka wont be drank neat after all !! Mixed with something else they wont have a clue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,324 ✭✭✭Alter-Ego

Keep it in the freezer for a few days and keep the mixers cold as well. If anybody says anything tell them to STFU.

Just make sure it's grain vodka and not molasses.
