Drive It In or Reverse It In

....Parking that is. When you are parking do you drive in and reverse out or reverse in and drive out? I cannot understand why anyone drives in. Reversing out is such a pain in the hole. Much easier to reverse into the space. And not try to pull an Andy Gray but I've noticed that women are notorious for driving in. Then you see them spend a good 10 minutes trying to get the car out. Of course some men are the very same. Actually is there anyone who thinks reversing in is easier then reversing out?

Reversing out is easier than reversing in.

I reverse my motorcycle in. Well, push it i guss is more appropriate word.

But reversing into a parkingspace was the first thing i was good at when i did my drivinglessons. :D

I think that's all in the head. No punting or anything, but you would be reversing any way. Just that it feels more confined makes it feel more difficult. IMHO.

No, it really is easier. You have much more space available to you. That makes it easier. And quicker too.

There's signs in some carparks that actually say they have a "Drive in, back out" system, because it's easier.

I don't see that it makes much difference. A competent driver can reverse in either direction. It might save you a second or two in the morning if you reverse in at night, but then it's harder to get the shopping out if you do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭maggy_thatcher

It depends on a few things:
    1. In a supermarket, it's often easier to reverse out as it means the boot is much more easily accessible when trying to dump a load of shopping in
    2. In some shopping centres, such as Liffey Valley, the angled parking bays make reversing in impractical (you'd then be facing the wrong way down a one way street)
    3. Technically, reversing out of your driveway is illegal (you are reversing onto a more major road).

It's one of those things that seems like a viable double entendre at first, but on closer scrutiny it doesn't actually make any sense.

Like, how would one go about reversing it in?

    Reminds me of this article.

Parking normally: Drive in. Reversing out gives you a chance to get your belt on as well.

Emergency vehicle/bank robbery/ baby being born: opposite. Need the quick getaway.

I always laugh when I see some idiot reversing into an angled parking bay, or getting confused when they have difficulty driving straight out of one.

I tend to reverse in if the spot is tight, but if the place is busy I usually go straight in, cos you know if you drive by it, the moron behind you won't realise you're trying to reverse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

Reversing in. For some bizarre reason, I'm better doing it that way than if I try to drive straight in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 414 ✭✭danh789

Its easier to see passing traffic/pedestrians if you're driving out. Also you're more restricted when it comes to reversing out if there is cars in the other spaces beside you. Much easier to position a car when reversing in. But maybe its just me. I didnt expect this many to be in favour of reversing out!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭NothingMan

I personally find it easier to reverse a car into a space. To drive in you can need a decent swing but you can reverse in while being really tight to the cars. If i was going shopping I would drive in to have boot access but other than that I always reverse.

Unless the car park is designed as #2, I prefer to reverse in and drive out, I've had the situation where I've driven in and then a bloody great SUV parks next to me making it impossible to see a thing while reversing out.
Driving out in the same situation is easier, you still can't see but you only have to stick a small bit out before you can see.

I prefer driving in. I have always had a problem with reversing into a parking space. At this stage it is pyschological.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,178 ✭✭✭✭NothingMan

To reverse into a space you drive past it so the back of your car is approx a foot past the space, lock the wheel and in you go.

To drive in you need to take a pretty decent swing away from the space and then turn into it so that your car is practically straight by the time the front of your car is going into the space.

    Reversing is much easier.

nearly always drive in...my car (primera) has a reversing camera ( so driving in or reversing in makes no diff) and it's fantastic...every car should have one imo..
I'm changing it this year and dreading getting a car with no camera :(
probably have about 20 dents on it within the first week.

Ah the joys of living somewhere with proper public transport and not having to worry about finding a parking space :)

Depends on the situation,if there is no traffic behind me I reverse in but if there is,I drive in so as not to hold anyone up.
    Maybe I'm too considerate :p

Drive in, reverse out all the time. Have never yet had a problem reversing out of a space, even if there is something big like a jeep or somethin beside me. You just take it handy thats all. I'd be terrified I'd hit something reversing in between two cars:eek:

Why change it? Or why not get another car with a camera?

is that not to prevent people forcing trolleys between cars to get to boot etc limiting damage?

it is far easier to reverse into a spaced as the car is much more maneuverable. try it sometime! ;)

Depending on the circumstances I would usually reverse in. There is better control entering a small space by reversing, and, important in a car park where people and children will walk across a moving car, there's better visibility driving out.

On which matter, why do people walk across the back of a reversing car?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Depends on my mood. If the kids are playing up and annoying me, I usually reverse out wildly, scattering feral urchins and their nagging mothers like human ten-pin skittles.

    /I usually reverse in

These are generally chevronned car parks - to advise people against reversing into a space where they'll be facing the wrong way on a one-way system if they drive out.

It's kid of sad that they have to tell people that.

Reversing in is the only way (and yes, I'm female). I like to think I can get out of trouble far more quickly than I got into it. Plus, you don't know who or what is going to park beside you when you are away from your vehicle so it is making it easier on yourself to be able to simply drive out - you may be in a tighter spot than the one you parked in!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 169 ✭✭alandublin15

drive in. zip in no problem. if you reverse in theres always some **** waiting while you reverse in goin come'on come'on get out of my fkin way - the pressures too much i just cant take it.

but if you reverse out - theyre nice as pie and all smiley cause they want your spot.

With the exception of angled parking bays, such as those in liffey valley sc. And on the very odd occassion I go somewhere like IKEA and want easy access to the boot when I come out of the shop. I always reverse into the spot and drive out. It just makes so much more sense to me. There will be less obstructions when reversing in than when reversing out (in my opinion).

It's much easier to get a swing on the car when reversing in that when you have tow cars either side of you.

And as someone also pointed out already, it's actually not legal to reverse out of your driveway as you are never suppose to reverse from a secondary road onto a primary road which is essentially what you are doing.

Reversing in is easier than driving in though, most of the time. I'll only drive into a space if there is loads of room, as it can be really hard to get the right angle. It took me ages to be confident enough to reverse into spaces but I find it much easier now.

Either. . . i'm as good at driving in and reversing out as i am at reversing in and driving out... and parallel parking.. i'm a whiz at driving in or reversing in. . . genius.. ;) (comes from our work parking.. 6 very limited spaces that take a 500 point turn if someone parks crooked)

    Reverse in almost always.
It's just easier to drive away then as I can see properly and don't have to look over my shoulder for cars/people/trolleys.
When I reverse into a spot I pretty much just use my mirrors so I don't have to crank my neck then either.

Id say your right, imagine a shopping centre where everyone reversed into the spaces, we would be there all day, plenty have a hard time driving into them, but reversing out into the open space is easier for them.

Reverse into parking space, and then drive out........but preferrably a drive through space, where you drive through one space to the space in front so you are ready to drive out..............Now there is laziness for you;-)

Some drivers think there is some elusive rare skill to driving and they possess it. In reality stupid drivers just make it appear that way.

Reversing out of a drive way or parking space is an excellent way of killing people, especially small children.
