Tough one there for Harrington...Geoff Ogilvy.

Thanks for posting this...some interesting matches there.

Poulter v Cink has to be the pick of the bunch there. Last year champion versus a player who always seems to make at least the quater finals. Should be a fun 5 days.

Watney and Kim should be a cracker.... I presume Wednesday is the pro-am???

You could have a few withdrawals yet so I guess this line up is subject to change.

It'd be great if Sky Sports used the red button for match play events where you could pick the match of your choice. Even if they showed the top 8 match ups or something.

Am I correct in thinking that if even one player pulls out of the event, then the entire draw will change? The combined ranking of the players in each match is 65. If a player pulls out, the No 65 ranked player will qualify and be deemed to be No 64. Everyone elses ranking right up to the player who pulls out would then move up one place and so the entire draw would change.

Francesco Molinari's wife had a baby over the past weekend and he is apparently unlikely to play.

"Although the field list won’t be finalized until Friday, here are the first-round matchups IF each of the top 64 players opt to participate. If any players inside the top 64 do not play, they will be replaced by the next highest players in the ranking. Should that happen, of course, it would change all the matchups. That’s why we put an asterisk on the headline."

If the draw happens to stay this way i am really looking forward to the:
Kaymer v Noh match - some form young players from the Euro tour
Woods v Bjorn - Woods in for a shock result here from in form Bjorn
    Stricker v Mannesero - Youth v Experience / US V EUROPE
Schwartzel v Ishikawa - 2 really good young players who could become great
Watney v Kim - absolute birdie fest

Tim Clark is injured as is Ernie Els (both pulled out of Northern Turst this week) so both could be an absentees.

Nick Watney also pulled out and Paul Casey has a niggling neck injury.

If harrington and woods get through there 1st round ties, they'll face each other, like the look of that! Doubt Padraig will get through Ogilvy though.

Paddy drives me mad with his inconsistency and sublime scrambling pedigree, him and the Tiger always go at it hard so it would be great to see them play against each other. Paddy owes him one for that WGC Bridgestone Invitational a few years ago...........

I like McIlroy, he'll make lots of birdies.........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,431 ✭✭✭dvemail

I know he hasnt played in a while but McDowell has to be one of the favourites for this event.
He didnt do very well last year but after the Ryder Cup, US Open and his final round in Hawaii he may have a but of an "aura" about him that could help him through.

The PGA website put up a good wall chart to track the matches.

    Link is here:

    http://i.cdn.turner.com/pgatour/docs/accenture-match-play.pdf##

    My predictions for semis

    Stricker Vs McDowell

    McIlroy Vs Dustin Johnson

    McIlroy to win.

Fancy Casey to perform well here, in good form and finished runner up last year.

Don't think McDowell will make the latter stages, coming off a substantial break and in an absolute brute of a bracket with Poulter, Allenby, Cink, Quiros, Mickelson, Kuchar and Fowler. He'd likely have to beat 3 of that lot just to make a semi-final.

McIlroy doesn't have a bad draw in comparison and could do well if he builds up a bit of momentum. Dangerous match first up because Byrd is one of those golfers who can run up a string of birdies in a row which is gold in matchplay situations.

Ryan Moore or Charl Schwartzel to be possible outsiders who contend.

I think Cink is at a great price at 66/1. Just coming into a small bit of form. Has a good record in this event at this golf course and as we all know from recent Ryder Cups he is unbelievable at matchplay.

Totally agree gonna back him tomorrow,if he beats poulter his price will plummet.Who do u think will b the biggest name to go wednesday guys might have a punt on mannesero to beat stricker 6/4
Fisher is a massive price at 50/1 defintely an e/w bet

If Cink had a different draw he'd definitely be a great shout but like I said before that bracket is a nightmare with loads of in form players. A couple of quid each way at that price is still a decent shout.

Really looking forward to seeing Mannesero's take on Stricker, he could really announce himself on the American stage with a win there.

Fisher hasn't done much lately and doesn't really putt consistently enough to win a tournament like this imo.

Like both of these, Haas has a good draw. First appearance though I think, could count against him.

Poulter absolutely believes that he's the king of matchplay. And ya know what, that kind of confidence really is half the battle in Golf.

Looking at a small wager on the following accumulator, fiver wins over 100.

    Casey
    Haas
    Allenby
    Kuchar
    Schwartzel
    Westwood
    Watney

I'd back Fisher if Harrington was caddying for him & reading his putts! And I'd probably back Harrington if Fisher was caddying for him & hitting his drives! :D

Cink is an awesome price, he can beat anyone...

Im on tiger, rory and cink. Tiger i think is a good bet for this @14/1 on BF. Rory won't have to rely on his putting as much and if on form will be hard to knock out. Cink @74/1 on BF was well worth 2euro.

ya reckon?,in 18 hole matchplay no matter who you're playing putting is parramount, fast greens, lots of 4-8 footers for wins/halves
surely over a four day normal event there is less pressure on his putting as he'll always pick up his tap in birdies along the way
that said i think his putting is getting there and i think he'll go close this week but i don't agree with the above statement
    please explain,ta

Don't have access to betting sites but just done out my prediction of what will happen and I have a Fowler v Casey final! What price is Fowler? I think I will throw a few quid on:

    Casey
    Fowler
    Cink
    Ryan Moore

Have to agree, for me, match play is all about putting it in play from the tee and making putts on the green. You can't win a matchplay match without putting well. I can see why you might say it's not as important - because you have 'gimmes' etc and you're not keeping a stroke score - but in practice it's essential to putt well in matchplay.

imo when rory misses a few putts in a round of a 4 day event it can ruin his chances and affect his game, in mp i think he can put a few missed putts behind him quicker and bounce back. Also his has an aggressive putting style and more often than not races by the hole a few feet and leaves him under more pressure to get one back. In mp alot of the ones back make no difference so overall there is less pressure on putting,mp you need to make putts{suit rory i think}, stroke play you need to make alot of 2 putts, thats my opinion on it wheter you agree or not ?

someone needs to teach usa what matches should be on tv. Poulter vs Cink out 1st. who chose that. best game of the round.

Yeah if you check out Poulters twitter page he is not impressed, the sponsors have been running some competition where people can pick what he wears as well. If he is not going to be in any coverage it's a bit pointless his match wil be finished before any coverage starts

Most of the Europeanns seem to be teeing off early bar Westwood, Kaymer & Harrington.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭ShriekingSheet

I've gone with doubles on the below pairs to win their section:

    McDowell & Casey
    McIlroy & Donald
    Mickelson & Kaymer

Health warning: I'm dreadful at betting on golf.
