    Nice review here.

Thanks for that Antrim_Man, I've a deposit put down on one, hopefully getting it in a few weeks.

I've driven its Hyundai cousin and was impressed, that was the 2.0
The Kia uses the new 1.7 diesel, and to be fair, their 1.6 and 2.0 engines are good, can't see it being a problem in the sportage.

1.5 qashqai being the realistic benchmark.

I've driven both the Sportage & Qashqai a few times over the past month and the Sportage definately is the nicer machine all round - albeit for about 2k more.

The only reason I'd have gone for the Qashqai over the Sportage would be the connect system (built in sat nav and reversing camera).

Cool. The problem for me with the Qashqai and Skoda Yeti and many others is the smallish boot space, but the Kia has a larger 565 litres.

I have ordered an EX spec one myself :D

How did you find the Kia's 1.7D engine??

I think the op hasn't driven the 1.7 yet. Demos are 2.0?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Shannonsider

I drove a demo 1.7 (I'll be VERY disappointed if it was actually the 2 litre they let me drive!!):(

I've put down an order for the 1.7 diesel EX model as well. Found the 1.7 very nippy, especially compared to the Qashqai. I do mostly motorway driving so I didnt get to open her out much.

The Sportage seems a much safer and bigger car from behind the wheel. The Qashqai seems claustrophobic after coming out of the Sportage.

I believe the 1.7D has its torque starting at lower revs than most diesels so it is nippy enough through the gears.

    Two snippets here

a new 1.7-litre version of Kia’s ‘U2’ diesel will become available. Designed and engineered at Kia’s R&D Centre in Germany, this 115 ps engine meets Euro 5 emissions regulations and is cleaner, quieter and more fuel-efficient than previous U2 engines. It has been developed for optimum driveability, with more than 90 per cent of the maximum torque available from just 2,000 rpm.

The new twin turbo 1.7 litre diesel engine will feel a lot more lively than 115PS implies because it won't have the lack of torque at low revs that bedevils too many diesel engines. It's also very economical, and by next year, KIA hopes to get the CO2 down to 125g/km, which will even beat the 4WD Toyota Urban Cruiser and the 2WD Nissan Qashqai 1.5 diesel. Though like most Qashqais on the roads, the lowest CO2 Sportages will be two-wheel drive rather than four-wheel drive. You can't have everything.

I test drove all of the models with my sister over the past few weekends and was very impressed with the Kia. If you call around the dealers they are available for immediate delivery.

The styling is far nice than the Hyundai, thats just my opinion though.

It was a lot more responsive than a Qashqai to drive, all of which were only available in poverty spec after calling to 3 garages in Dublin.

I'm not sure which she went for in the end, it was a toss up between mid range Sportage/IX35

I have been driving the wifes 2011 GSE Sportage today lovely machine and loaded with extras. Really like it.

They are nice allright and very nice looking. I am just not gone on the inside displays like the radio etc. It would not put me off one though. What price is the 1.7 Op.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Shannonsider

Basic model in the 1.7 is around €26,600 to the highest spec which is around €31,000. The mid spec is just under €29k. Mid range model has very good spec and the only difference from the highest spec model is half leather seats as opposed to full leather.

The only thing I don't like about the Sportage is this random bit of chrome on the back seat passenger's window (really stands out on the black model).

Very Nice bus. Did a test drive but choose the Skoda Superb instead.

I don't think the mpg is great.

Bit more of a difference between the EX and the GSE, with the GSE you get

    Xenon Lights
    Full leather
    Front Wiper Deicer
    Heated Front and Rear Seats
Dual Auto Air Conditioning with Cooled Glovebox Function
    Automatic Light Control (Headlamp)
    Supervision cluster

Well worth the extra couple of quid imo.

Picked up the KIA today. What a comfy car and cannot get over how smooth the gear box is. I just left back an 09 Mazda 6 and the gear box was very notchy. The 1.7D engine has just enough poke and is quiet. The steering is good and the finish is great. I don't get the cheap plastics jibe that I've seen on some reviews. I had an 08 BMW 318 M sport for a while and it was poor.

I would highly recommend this car for the money, so far :D

    Well there's your problem

Very underpowered 2L, noisy, coarse, old fashion interior, cramped, bad gear box and the rattle/vibration when stop start was in use :o

And the feckin thing was a €40k car

Silver. A tad boring but easy to keep clean :) I would have loved the blue one but they do not do the blue in ROI :(

I bought one of the first model Sportage's in 2005 and it was a great car, well made, packed full of goodies (really liked the heated seats in winter) and faultless in the year that I owned it. We made the mistake of buying the 2 litre petrol model (it was the only engine available at that time) and it literally ate petrol. I was putting in €60 a week in petrol into it and that was returning just 22 miles per gallon of country back road driving. If I had the money, I'd have no hesitation buying another Sportage, albeit a diesel one this time:D

I have found a discrepancy in the owners manual. For the manual aircon the manual says that the max defrost button for the front window sets the blower fan speed to full. It does not, it only works for cars with climate control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Shannonsider

Picked up a Silver 1.7 diesel the weekend and I am absolutely delighted with it. The only thing is I'm not sure if it has an alarm/immobiliser.

I can't see either mentioned in the brochure anywhere. And the manual doesn't specify if the EX model has one. I'm sure I can test the alarm by locking someine inside and getting them to try and open the door, but not sure about the immobiliser.

Anyone verify if it has an alarm/immobiliser? I just presumed in this day and age an alarm would be standard on most cars.

If anybody is looking for an IPod cable for a sportage PM me.
It does have an immobiliser by the way.

would the commercial spec be the same as the 5 seater? And would the 1.7 be any good for a trailer (twin axel)?

Commercial would be the same spec al. I would be buying the 2.0 if I was pulling the twin axel trailer.

For those that bought the KIA over the Hyundai, can I ask why? Just curious. They are pretty much the same car right? Was it purely down to preference in looks? I guess the Hyundai would have better resale and has the 2.0 diesel with 4WD.

Best thing to do is drive one and see what the power is like. I have heard the 1.7 is fairly powerful though.

Last landcruiser allright but the new one looks all wrong I think. The last of the old models were sold off fairly cheap..

Hmm would depend on how cheap, will take the sportage for a spin, in fairness the kyron has done 100k with just 3 injectors replaced last month.

The last of the old model were sold for roughly 24k + VAT longwheelbase but that was last year. 7 year warranty with the KIA is hard to beat plus they look a way better than the Toyota.

Not to many dealers in Cork though. Colemans in Millstreet being one of the busiest.

I recently test drove the Hyundai Ix35, the Santa fe, the New Kia sportage and the Kia Sorento, would pick the Sportage over the Ix35 as it has a better spec and nicer interior,
The sorento is a 7 seater and is far better looking and is bigger and has more spec than Santa Fe. It also has a 7 year warranty where the hyundai has only 5.

Just got a reply from Kia, and the new Sportage does have an alarm/immobiliser as standard.

    Hi Icom,

Thank you for contacting Kia Motors Ireland.

The new Sportage EX model does comes standard with an advanced anti-theft system which includes both immobiliser and alarm

You can buy the Sportage with a 2 litre diesel engine and 4WD

The Sportage looks very very stylish, the Hyundai IX35 for me is ugly :)

Oh didn't realise the Sportage has the 2.0D. PDF price list on website didn't list it. I'm surprised you think the Hyundai looks ugly, they look very similar to me but I admit I haven't looked too closely.

7 years is a great warranty. If I get a few bob saved up later in the year I may test drive one. Something to aim for. It looks like it would be great for driving down to all the beaches around the country. Wonder what space is in the back / can it fit a surfboard when the back seat is folded.
