I've been hearing that eating too much fruit when you're trying to lose weight is not good because they contain a lot of carbs; but is this true?

Isn't fruit supposed to be extremely healthy? I love fruit more so than veg and I eat on avergae about 6/7 pieces per day and 2-4 veg. Is this too much fruit?

Any help would be greatly apprectiated! :)

depends on what fruit you are eating, are you eating 6/7 bananas, or are you eating strawberries and blueberries. There is a big difference. A banana is a small meal while a strawberry is a tiny amount of calories. 6/7 is a lot but it depends on what you are eating. I would have two or three a day strawberries, blueberries and little oranges when trying to loose weight. You are better off with veg but if that is the "worst" you are eating then I wouldnt worry.

I'd never say that fruit is bad for you. If you're trying to lose weight on a low carb diet then you need to look at the fruits you're eating as some of them are a naturally high carb source.

Google them and check out the nutritional values and calories for the fruits you're eating.

Generally speaking though, vegetables are better than fruits, because fruit has more naturally occuring sugar (fructose). This may lead to sugar cravings/binges.

Having said all that though, I've yet to meet anybody who became overweight from eating too much fruit.

Wouldn't say it's bad for you, but just make sure you include the calories in your daily calorie intake. Veggies have virtually no calories.

I've been hearing that eating too much fruit when you're trying to lose weight is not good because they contain a lot of carbs; but is this true?

There are multiple issues here. Because of the fructose metabolism path in the body, excess fructose (when liver glycogen is full) is released into the blood as triglycerides. Liver glycogen is full more often when you're in a caloric excess, not deficit. So from this pov, I'd limit fruit intake when trying to put on weight.

Then, you (or 'they') assume that carbs are detrimental to weight loss; they aren't, it's the total calories that count. Of course you want to get plenty of protein and healthy fats on a deficit diet, which limits fruit a little bit.

It's supposed to be healthy the same way 'detoxifying your body' is healthy. Fruit in moderation is ok. 6/7 a day would go above my limit of 4-5, I'd be more comfortable with that. I hope you're also doing exercise to use up liver glycogen.

I only noticed recently that the fruit with the lowest GI and the lowest carbs and cals tends to be local fruit. Even better if you grow or pick it yourself. So feel free to fill up on strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, loganberries, gooseberries, sour cherries, black currents, apples, pears.

Limit fruit which has more air miles than you do: banana, pineapple, mango, grapes etc.

Ah ok thank you, I wouldnt eat 6/7 bananas haha I know that they should be eaten in smaller quantities. The 6/7 would normally consist of strawberries, blueberries, apples, raspberries, grapes and oranges

And Rocky, I run 3/4 times a week and swim once a week so I think Im ok on the exercise side of things :)

Oh and I just noticed Eileen that you said grapes, so I'll take that into account and not eat so many grapes cause I tend to eat loads... probably more than I should!! :P

I suppose tropical fruits get more energy from the sun and convert it into more energy/sugar.

I remember a documentary with an obese man eating 35 oranges a day and thinking he was doing great. Grapes/grape juice would be about 16% sugar (coca cola is 10.5%) bananas are about 22% sugar, theres a reason you see cyclists eating them! calorie dense, so lightweight food to carry along.

Would there be some/lots of tooth decay if one is eating lots of fruit?
