Something going on along the river

Crossing the river at Bridge Street there and there seems to be a bit of drama - lots of Guards running up and down the riverside walkway and people standing peering into the water. Now I hear a helicopter buzzing overhead.
All the signs of someone going into the river - I hope it's not the case, the flow is fairly serious at the moment.

    Sounds bad, hopefully not.

The search and rescue helicopter is out. It seems to be going along the river. Hope it is not bad news.

Helicopter seems to be coming inland a bit as well (maybe towards the docks area?) because its been sounding like its right on top of my house a few times now and i'm between shop street at the docks.

I really hope nothing bad has happened and it's just a false alarm :(

It dosent look good. Search and Rescue helicopter is scouring the river with its floodlight from Salmon Weir bridge out as far as Dun Aengus. Guards, Fire Brigade and ambulances out in force at the bridges.

Helicopter up by the Cathedral now, lights trained on the river and the canal. Any early reports on who/where they think someone may have fallen in?

Chopper passed over Newcastle area there, en route to hospital maybe? Would be better news than back to Shannon or wherever...

Any more news in the last half hour or so? Chopper seemed to go quiet for a good while then back, but not as loud, maybe further down towards the river?

Don't know anything but I'd say was a suicide attempt, too early for it to be a drunken mistake surely.

Best not to make any conclusions, even off the cuff, until all the facts have come out.

The helicopter is out over the bay now, looks like a boat is out there as well probably the inshore lifeboat.
    Doesn't look good I'm afraid. :(

    Hopefully it's a training exercise.

Not nice to speculate though, tragedy, grieving family and all that.

Just heard the helicopter go out by Doughiska. Maybe the search is over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭ciano1

Do you know someone who saw it?

I was just talking to a friend who was on his way to my place and saw all the drama unfold, he asked a guy in the street and that's what he told him.

Don't hold me to it of course, I'm just telling what I heard

They dont do training exercises over built up areas. Only training into and out of Hospital pads, other than that it is all out at sea or mountain training with Mountain rescue or CG Units.

christ sake do you people slow down to get a good look as you drive by accidents?

want info? phone the guards or wait for the news, whats the point in the ongoing speculation.

Or we could just ask here and try spread the info that is out there. The point in speculation is that someone may have good info, and the guards aren't exactly good on releasing info about accidents to everyone.

Yes, morbid curiosity and all that. Same reason I check my exam results.

Hearing the chopper myself. If someone went in I hope they're found in time. If anyone actually knows what's happening I'd be glad to hear it. There's been too much of this sort of thing lately.

From what I've been told it is a man, and apparently his family was present at the time.

all gone silent now.. the fire and rescue lads went off in the jeep a few mins ago... fingers crossed it's a false alarm and the rumours aren't true

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Michael Angelo.

Im conscious there may be a person in the river and i know it may be inappropriate putting up a heli tracking site, i hope no one takes any offence. The main thing is obviously a safe recovery. Heres hoping!

Hope they got them. I was leaving my nephew into town there around half five and saw the cops up around the Cathedral.

Bloody cold weather there. Water would be freezing.:(

I guess this is the man?
    http://www.galwaynews.ie/17623-search-resumes-man-river-corrib

A search is resuming this morning for a man thought to have entered the water in the city last evening.
Galway RNLI lifeboat, the Irish Coastguard helicopter, the fire brigade and Gardaí were involved in the search last evening, but no-one was found.

such a sad outcome. condolences to the persons family and friends

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

^^^yea thats right, but they are continuing there search today for a man thats been missing since January aswell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

More info: It wasnt the person who entered last night that was recovered, it was someone else. Search continues.

the man that the found is NOT the man that was in the water yesterday.

Scary how common this is becoming.

Always was Dolphin, sadly :( I remember a time c 2005/2006 when a helicopter was seemingly beachcombing almost every saturday....and not always the SAR which specialises in finding live ones using Infra Red sensors.

In the interest of sensitivity, perhaps previous posts could be edited to replace a particular word used with 'entered' or 'fell into' the water.

In a recession marraiges, birthrates and tragic losses like this increase. Poor families involved.

With people going into the river quite frequently these days and then most of the time being washed out to sea how about this idea. How much would it cost to have a net or grill of some kind across the water at Wolftone bridge that could stop anyone being washed down the river? Ok, granted it may not save every life, but it would save the trauma of the relatives searching for their loved ones and I am sure it would also save a lot as well.

    ... about 5

Mr justMary was acquainted with the man who disappeared about two weeks ago (not yet know if he was the one found on Mutton Island), and also with the woman who was the subject of the last major helicopter search. We haven't heard anything about yesterdays incident as yet, but seriously hoping these things don't come in threes.

There was no evidence that the river was involved with man-from-two-weeks-ago .. but given that we live in a city surrounded by water it's an ever-present threat. The garda told him that there are about 20/year.

Also, don't assume these things are necessarily related to the recession.

Can we not simply ban this kind of thread unless an official announcement is made <hint , normally it ain't unless the internet is yabbering about it which emboldens our more ghoulish journalists>

I agree with you on this one SB. These threads serve no function. They don't provide any assistance to anyone and quickly spin out into pointless bickering and Joe Duffyesq sentiments.

On second thoughts the above posters are correct.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

Just the way it is Ronnie, the Guards will treat these situations very sensitively and some rubbernecking ghoul ( not a regular usually :( ) will start a thread here undoing their good work. I have seen far worse than this one over the years.

For the record I know two families who had to contend with 'situations' in the past year and they could not praise the guards highly enough.

So I am essentially asking for a rule that lets the guards do what they are very very good at, and in privacy.

Why should it be banned though? No names were mentioned, nor was there any distressing information posted. If a family member requests it be closed, then that is one thing. But it's not up to you to censor what is posted here, or in the future.

People have a right to information too-by the above logic the Cork plane crash thread would be banned. I'm not trying to be insensitive, but your request strikes me as an over emotional knee-jerk reaction.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

Because I am sick of them and because they invariably lead to a single inevitable conclusion. This one is only infamous for being about finding the 'wrong' body :(

So I propose a "give the guards the space to deal with delicate matters" rule and the regulars know what it means which is all that matters.

    I disagree.

In the ordinary course of events I am opposed to over moderation and threads being shut down. In this case I believe it's warranted.

You used the example of the Cork airplane crash. That thread, albeit a train wreck of a thread, did serve a function - a public interest function. People have a legitimate interest in having knowledge of that accident, both in general and specific terms. Air travel affects most of us and it is in the public interest to find out the cause(s) of the accident. Specifically, people would want to know the flight number/registration of the accident aircraft to hopefully exclude the possibility that a loved one/friend had been involved in the accident.

A thread relating to a person entering the river is not in the public interest. It's a sad fact that most individuals enter the Corrib of their own volition. The only persons that have an interest in this are the friends and family of the missing person. Accordingly, this information will be provided by the Gardai/Emergency Services. I'm sure it's an extremely difficult time for the missing persons family. Discussion on boards likes this are of absolutely probative value - they are nothing more than rubbernecking.

A small point - the kayakers were out doing some rescue drills on the day in question. After seeing the helicopter and fire brigade, here was the first place I came to check that it was not one of them.
