Exercise to replace squats?

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for your help to find an effective exercise I can do instead of squats. I really love doing squats and was making great progress but the gym I am in now doesn't have a squat rack so I need something that can be as effective to replace it.

There is a smith machine in the gym but I have heard bad things about using that for squats so I have steered clear, don't want to injure myself.

I have tried lunges but can't do them as I have a dodgy left knee, hurts when I do lunges.

Thanks in advance for any hints or tips.....:D

Pistol squats. Squat on one leg with the other one raised out in front.

Maybe overhead squats - you might not need so much weight that you need a rack.

Squat rack is pretty important for weight training though tbh. Finding another gym might be a better idea!

Cheers, I'll give those a go. I just moved to Korea and it's the first gym I found, joined for 3 months then I'm going to have a look for somewhere else.

    Power clean+front squats
    split squats
    hack squats
    zercher squats

Maybe avoid pistol squats if you have a gammy knee.

+1, I'd say they'll wreck you if lunges are causing you trouble.

If none of the squat variations are viable I'd just leg press and deadlift, not perfect but nothing will be.

Do pistols with my resting leg out behind.......my quads cramp if I put it in front. Does this make a difference?

I'd go for power cleans and front squats for the mean time and then a new gym :).

I used to train in a jackie skellys, which needless to say had no rack, and used the dip station as a rack.

Give deficit deadlifts a go, you have to get down much lower than standard deads and bring your legs into it much more. not ideal but any port in a storm!

Never thought of using the dip station.....I'll check it our when I'm tomorrow to see that's a viable solution. If not then are plenty of great recommendations, cheers guys, thanks for all the great feedback.
