    Based on recent polls FG + Right Independents might* form government

    *Ignore this possibility for the purposes of this thread.

    If the above comes to pass Labour would be the main opposition.

    Could SF form a coalition in opposition with Left independents to create the second largest opposition party, hence relegating Fianna Fail to being the 4th largest party?

    What would be the practical implications of this if it were to happen?

    They wouldn't be the biggest opposition party per se as the independents aren't part of the party and can vote independently (if they wanted to, vote against SF).

    SF did have a technical group in the outgoing Dáil but it was purely for more Dáil speaking time and wasn't a political alliance.

    But here's hoping SF will be bigger than FF, regardless.

    "If" FG make it with a few independents, then Labour would be the biggest opposition party and FF possibly the second biggest opposition party.

    I am just wondering if SF could form some sort of coalition to become the second biggest opposition party, overtaking FF, and would it make any difference?

    Maybe I should word my Q a bit different, would it make any difference in the grand scheme of things if FF were the 3rd or 4th biggest party in the next Dail?

    yes, the leading opposition party get the most speaking time and a front bench.
    SF did great work as an opposition party in the outgoing dáil with only 5 TDs, ringing the Donegal SW by-election, bringing the IMF vote to the Dáil among others
