ok so im in a club with my friends...we are alll drinking...there downing pints of beer and large bottles of cider......i would rather leave than drink a pint ( not joking at all)...kind of hard at 21 when there all downing 10-12 pints which only costs them 30 quid and im paying 7.50 a drink :( but then again they aren't up at 9.am to train :P..but im very curious.. what are the best drinks nutritionally???

ive usually been drinking either Vodka,Henessey or Jack Daniels with diet 7up or coke ( id ask for lemon wedges & soda water or tonic etc but most of our clubs dont do them :/......so whats good and whats no good???:D

Spirits and sugar-free mixer, in particular gin or vodka.

Nutritionally? I'd say a Bloody Mary, loads of tomato juice and a bit of celery.

As regards low calorie, I'd say a Whiskey Soda, pretty much zero carbs.

I stick to the odd Guinness and straight Jameson myself, as long as you go easy on it and the rest of your diet is well planned, you need not worry too much.

A mate of mine hits the drink much harder than I do, has a worse diet than me and is in better shape, it never lasts though..

If you're training hard you might want to consider cutting the drink out completely, I would myself, apparently there's better ways to spend your time and money, let me know if you find them :P

Straight spirits with diet mixers are calorifically the lightest. I managed to lose 3 stone while still pounding them away at the weekends.
Guinness is good but if you're not a pint drinker it's not for you.

Wine doesn't suit everyone, but it has some benefits - 500kcal per bottle. And a bottle is usually just about the right amount to take the edge off and give you a buzz without making you crave a shedload more.

9am training though? Hmm. Any more than two drinks of any kind and 11am would be my earliest start time.

Vodka & 7 up free/sprite zero is great stuff. Pricey though for a night out. Great at home on Friday or Saturday night.

Vodka and decent mixer is my usual choice, only thing is that I have a big gulp in me when i'm chatting away to friends so i end up buying too many for my wallet and i am a lightweight. So the result is apocalyptic for me. I will still never forget the time when i had a few vodkas. I'd say everyone bar me was still sober. Home after 3ish and up again at 5.30am to teach a friggin spin class at 6.30am. I may have been still a little drunk but don't tell anyone.

For that reason, I drink Guinness as i drink them very slowly. Not always an option in a busy pub though

I gave up the sauce....i became such a lightweight that 3 pints on a friday screwed my saturday training so i just gave it up...one of the best choices i ever made.....pro's far outweigh the cons for me personally

Same with me regards volume. 2 pints of Guinness and I'm anyone's.

You're mad to be drinking heavily if training at 9am the next day. That will be very detrimental to training.

Waht kind of training by the way? If its fat loss you're after I'd go with the sugar free drinks and a sneaky quarter bottle in the pocket.

ah i wouldn't say mad..i mean im 21 & refuse to eat takeaways sausages pizzas anything crap really so my few drinks at the weekend are like my treat :D....i dont know how to best describe it..basically i go to the gym 6 days a week.....lift weights 4 days and cardio 2...in each session of cardio i burn 500 cals so that's 1000 cals per week...but i dont need to lose weight or fat...i mean i have a 6 pack and that so im assuming my body fat level is ok :)....id love to do that but unfortunately you cant bring drinks into the toilets in our clubs :(

ya never know you could perhaps do with the extra calories in stout/beer/cider if weight training 4 days a week

I think the whole lightweight thing comes from the changes in your body if youve been dieting, loosing weight and drinking less or no drink.

    glycerol - :P

    from wikipedia

As a sugar substitute, it has approximately 27 calories per teaspoon and is 60 percent as sweet as sucrose. Although it has about the same food energy as table sugar, it does not raise blood sugar levels, nor does it feed the bacteria that form plaques and cause dental cavities. As a food additive, glycerol is labeled as E number E422.

Be careful of values you find online, recipes and shot sizes can vary around the world, a quick search showed some generic site saying 1fluid oz is 70kcal, but that is smaller than an irish shot. UK ones are smaller too. It is best to go to the manufacturers Irish site if possible.

Guinness is suprisingly low in calories, 170kcal per 500ml can (it is on the actual can so I trust it), this is since it is fermented out more so few sugars remain. Southern comfort is a whiskey based liquer, so would have more calories PER UNIT ALCOHOL, but could have less calories per shot if your shot is small enough. It is difficult because of the bizarre fact that alcohol beverages do not have to disclose their nutritional info or calories in most countries. Tesco are good at listing them on their alcohols.

You have to be careful when calculating, people use terms like "drinks", 10 shots of 40% whiskey is the same alcohol as 5 pints of 5% beer.

You might have people hearing broad statments like "a pint is 200kcal" and then going into the porterhouse and downing 9% pints thinking they are doing great!
    glycerol - :P
Glycerol is added to lots of liquers it is what makes them syrupy and this also masks a poor product, some vodkas use it for this reason too.

I made a very long post on booze before here

WEould you think it the best option for the OP? I could be completely wrong and it probably doesn't make much difference anywawy but would guinness be slow release/lower GI than beer/cider? Possibly the most nutritious too

My point was, glycerol is an alcohol, glycerol is far less bad for you than ethanol. So glycerol would certainly be a better alcohol to drink than ethanol whilst keeping fit answering the ops question.

in hind sight maybe not the answer being looked for:P

I drink around 20 bottles of Coors light over the course of an average weekend and it has zero effect on my weight.
