If I was a member of a club that wasn't spending any money I'ld be raising hell at the meetings.

How much are you paying annually?

Pay 100 euro annually.Last meeting held was august 2009 as i said before it's a farce of a club lad's only in it for insurance was the excuse the chairman told me the last time and as i'm only a ''blow in'' into the area it's like who do you think you are coming here with any idea's for ''our club''.

IFA Countryside on web €70 p.a. , discounts onvarious other things also, makes getting permissions to shoot a bit easier when the farmer/landowner sees IFA , have a look at their website

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 514 ✭✭✭Savage93

I also encountered similr experience with club, joined for 2 years, was never told/shown club lands, closed shop, happy to take €150 p.a. membership for nothing in return, didn't join this year, in last 2 years got shooting permission on approx 1,000 acres, met 2 members in Dec on lands the club shoots but I have landowners permission for , told to f**k off club lands, rang landowner there and then who asked me to hand my phone to the boys and he told then to f**k off or the club would no longer have permission to shoot on his 600 acres or put a pheasant pen on same. I shoot rifle, no interest in birds, fox and rabbit, greys and crows (on ground)

Had a look there alright and was thinking along them lines with the farmers and the IFA.it's something they'll be more familiar with then the cai but the cai is only 60 according to the website and even cheaper if i get 7 lads to go with me.

IFA got me €35 off FBD insurance, and a fortune off Vodafone bill!

And every farmer knows about the IFA so if you show the IFA card it opens more gates than it closes.;)

ifa membership is good if your eligable
i get a voucher for 75 euro a year off my fbd insurance bill , that's my membership fee back as well as that they do a great deal on mobile phone and land line i used to spend 30-40 euro a month with pay as you go bill phone now is about half that ;)
the cai deal is good too we are in as a family package and im well happy with that too

T talk to our local panther hunter Alan, he'll sort you out with a club membership with the CAI, does the job with me, €55 a year if im right, covers you for any legal country pursuit so you'll be almost covered :D

Its sad to here lads saying I am leaving a club etc etc, as posted above raise hell look for a change, go forward yourself for election I am tired saying this a club is only as good as its members.

Essentially when you break down the membership fee for €100,

€55 goes to the NARGC for insurance
€20 affiliation fees (this is worst case scenario because this is what the Cork federation is charging members, I know in the county boards in the rest of the country its much cheaper.)
€25+ this is profit that the club should be putting back into game release.

You need to call on the members of the top table and demand to know what they are doing with your money, I wouldn't leave this lie!

the solo shooter not in a club only saves on his club membership, all clubs are different our club pays the affiliation out of the club funds which to CRGC is a whopping €40.:D

The €50 quid to the NARGC compensation fund, is paid by the member along with the club fees of whatever. The club fees in our case €30 is spent on birds vermin etc. It wasnt always that way, it took a change to ensure that was to happen and I know many clubs which had to do that. Again our NARGC fund and membership is €80, €5 dearer than CAI.

BTW I have nothing gainst CAI or indiviaual shooters, I do believe that well ran local clubs are the way to go

As for CAI insurance I have it myself for activities outside NARGC

Yeah, NARGC insurance doesn't seem to cover everything.

What else are you using CAI for that is not covered under NARGC insurance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,070 ✭✭✭cavan shooter

Clay shooting under the CSI and individual permissions where I can shoot not affiliated to a club and fishing

Dont get me wrong I am very happy with the NARGC compensation fund.

When something happens same with the dog insurance there is no hassle just pay out, cause its from a fund.

Know a lad that put in a claim when he broke his ankle out shooting, lost 6 weeks work due to it, anyway once it was reported he got a text to say not to worry all in hand, Chris Gavican looked after it.

He got money to cover his loss of earnings and all the medical, bills covered. And next year his membership of the fund still only cost €50.

Would CAI not cover something like that?

IFA all the way, massive discount an mobile and home phone/broadband. its also better than NARGC insurance as thats a fund, i have both so i am fully covered.

I am sure they do, I dont know anyone who has put in a claim so can only speak for experiences with the NARGC compensation fund, (which was very positive:))

I also noted that the CAI only covers for permanent injury/disability which always is a bit of a worry, Also I dont think I can claim for loss of work etc.

Hopefully i will never have to use any.:D

NARGC is not an insurance, but a compensation fund, they don't publish accounts, don't think they're regulated.
IFA COUNTRYSIDE indemnified by FBD who are gentlemen when it comes to handling landowners claims, who do you think farmers would rather clubs were affiliated to?

well lads (im new) , im thinkin of not joinin my club next year because of the same sorta stuff above but also half the "members" havent even payed there membership and still allowed to enter in competitions that are run within the club!!its a bit of a joke really

whats the story on your licence if you have givin the gun club grounds as your reason and area?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,070 ✭✭✭cavan shooter

A couple of things, if you are a club officer and there is an accident to non insured members you are in a world of hurt regarding liability etc. This has raised its head alot lately because of lads not re joining and shooting any way with club officers not writing to them formally or turning a blind eye

If you gave your reason to have a firearm as membership of a club, game pistol rifle etc and you cease to be a member of the club then you dont have a good reason for possessing a firearm.

Rancher I have a copy of the Report and accounts for the Financial year ending 31st July 2010 as handed out at a recent Game Council meeting signed of by Farrel Grant Sparks Chartered Accountants detailing claims paid out etc both dog and gun related.

NARGC has a proven track record of no quibble just payout for claims, personal injury, dog related (dog ran out under a car, car got damaged) and any other.

And the same with FBD,but as property owners we should be insisting on statutory regulation, remember the QUINN problem!!!!!!
The guys were looking for recomendations, now they've got mine.

Plenty and the fund is insured against big payouts, Its private and confidential and only available to fund members. If your a fund member get onto the Administrator.

If you compare your IFA/CAI and NARGC you will see that your better off with the NARGC fund and guys I have CAI insurance as well. CAI and IFA are personel accident, if my dog damages your sheep or your horse or I shoot a horse I am insured and the farmer gets comopensation. If I break my leg and cant work I get €300? a week from the NARGC fund, I get nothing from the CAI insurance as they dont cover you for out of work, and also the accident isnt a permanent disability so I dont get a payout. Excess on the NARGC for medical expenses is €100.

Its like this satisfy yourself that you have the insurance you want.

This is the part I don't understand. It's a fund, as in money goes in and gets used if required? Why does it need to be insured? E.G. say 60,000 members at approx. €50 each = €3,000,000 into the fund per annum. How many years is it there? Should be a nice 'kitty' there?

I know you are a fund member, As an individual Your covered upto 10 million in relation to 3rd party in any 1 claim, Id say the insurance is there to protect if ever 3/4 of those big claims where to come in in any year. LAst year was a rough year between an eye being lost and an amputation. CRH Group have their own fund (self insured and have it insured its not uncommon thing to do, prudent probabally)

From my experience Farmers are happy once your insured and show some manners. I know many farmers that are in the NARGC and CAI. The relationship with the farmer is something you build on over the years.

From my experience Farmers are happy once your insured and show some manners. .
until there's a problem, I rather deal with IFA than any of the others, they are the only one that has time for the landowner. The extra nargc benefits mean nothing if you don't have access to land.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,070 ✭✭✭cavan shooter

The access issue is key to any hunter and constantly through my posts you will see that i on numerous occasions state that we hunt only for the good will of land owners, our neighbours and friends.

I am a member of a number of NARGC clubs in which there are numerous farmers all very active members so not everyone has an issue with NARGC. I also am a member of CAI. The NARGC benefit is far better for all concerned.

In between the lines you are stating that farmers should only allow hunters on their land if they have IFA insurance. Fact is that is a decision for the individual farmer and one that he has every right to make same way as a farmer has every right to turn around and say "No shooting or Hunting", Lucky for me and most of the Lads here Farmers tend to take the view of work away so long as you
    1. Ask
    2. Respect the countryside and wildlife
    3. Dont act the maggot.
    4. Have insurance.

The local gun club is well established in Parishs' the length and breadth of the country and bar the odd issue there tends to be mutual respect betwenn members and farmers, Otherwise the NARGC clubs wouldnt have lasted as long.

Unfortunately some clubs are a bit too parochial when it comes to welcoming others and this has long been identified as aproblem and eventually will be detrimental to close minded clubs, nothing comes good of too much in breeding.

Its sad to here lads saying I am leaving a club etc etc, as posted above raise hell look for a change, go forward yourself for election I am tired saying this a club is only as good as its members.

It's easy to say and Difficult to do, I am an NARGC member and I have to say we don't help ourselves to encourage young members, some have this arrogant attitude to change and new ideas, regarding club executive it is a closed shop, we are run by people who are no longer active in shooting, they all vote for each other at the AGM and most of their cronies won't be seen for the rest of the year and I don't believe it is any better at regional or national level either.
I have often considered Solo Insurance and I certainly wouldn't tell anyone off for shooting on Solo Insurance, at least they have more courage than me to break away and face down the "establishment".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,070 ✭✭✭cavan shooter

your right their jack snipe, and their are a hell of a lot of people unhappy with the "powers that be", the only thing people can do at local level is to try change it, and even at national level. the closed door approach and cliques is all wrong. i have thought long and hard about keeping nargc membership fact is i am lucky i am in some good clubs with good lads that do alot
