Do these Apple Stores have a device installed that reads your iPhone.
This device then reports back to the Sales Guy so he can go up and say; Hello "who ever the phone is registered to". They can then walk back to the computer and he knows from your Apps on your iPhone what your into?

I hope for all the iPhone owners sakes that you are taking the pi55, cos that's a major invasion of privacy disguised as a "cool" feature!

Wonder where it'll be, I can't think of anywhere on Shop St that's available and would be the right size.

heard today it's the old Sisley shop opposite O'Briens shop.

Most top graphical designers/photographer/video editors use apple computer

I'm not sure  I'm about to pull the plug on a Sager/Clevo laptop. For 1,900 euros I get an I7 Sandy Bridge, Nvidia 460, 16GB ram, 120gig ssd in one bay, 750gig in the 2nd, 17.3" Full HD display and a 2-year European Collect & Return warranty.

I had a quick look at an Apple Macbook Pro in PcWorld at the weekend. For 2,250 euros it matches on the screen, but the rest.. an old I5, Nvidia 330, 4gb ram and a single 500gb hd. With those specs for that money they're having a laugh.

They are a 3rd party service centre. Authorised, sure. But 3rd party.

There is a huge, distinct, giant, enormous difference between an actual Apple Store and a service centre. Don't let the official logos in their workshop fool you into thinking you are dealing with Apple directly, or the fact that Apple's website may direct you to their business when searching for a service centre. Using these service centres you're not dealing with Apple Inc, and that's exactly how Apple see it. So the service centre can **** you over and you can't go crying to Apple to sort it out unless they feel like making an exception. As anyone who's had their Mac serviced in such a place can probably testify, especially if it went ar5eways.

It is always best to have your mac serviced via an apple store as this is the truest way of having apple deal with the issue 100% directly. All of this comes straight from the horses mouth, btw.

Apple still license these places, and take complaints - supposedly - seriously.

And to the people who had a bad experience with GalMac, well, I had a terrible and extremely drawn out experience with Screenway (the other 3rd party Mac service centre in Galway) whereas GalMac sorted it out within 24 hrs. Mind you the only reason I chose Screenway over GalMac in the first place was the attitude of the GalMac technician I spoke to for a quote, he seemed like a total arse. Maybe he is, but he got the job done lickity split. A job that Screenway for a long time denied needed doing and expected me to accept the machine in a malfunctioning state, and pay for the privilege.

So I guess YMMV but the moral of the story is a true-blue Apple Store is the best place to send your mac for service for 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

Agreed, Apple products are mediocre with excellent marketing which most uninformed people fall for.

MAC computers run on Intel hardware nowadays so I fail to see why they cost 2 to 3 times the price of a similar spec machine running windows when they are the exact same bar looks and the OS which to me don't justify the differential.

I'll bite my tongue about the iPhone for now

The iPhone which revolutionised the industry? The amount of sub-educated nonsense about the iPhone is extraordinary - it was years ahead of the competition when it arrived on the scene. The competition was Symbian, and ,er, RIM and Palm. All dying. Symbian may be abandoned by Nokia. Android has succeeded by copying the interface of the iPhone.

Plenty of reasons to not liked the closed environment of the OS, but it is an extraordinary phone.

    Its bull****.

On the other hand Google does know your entire search history ( that is, in fact, why they are in the mobile game, to make sure they continue to get these facts on all platforms). And you are logged into google's search results the first time you log into gmail on any browser (and never ever logged out again - the cookie is infinite).

And when you log onto an android device - the same.

Thanks, you have actually confirmed what was in my post. You think the iPhone is an extraordinary phone when it has only just got "multitasking" running on it. Again Apple believe in fooling their customers that the phone multitasks when what they have put on IOS4 is akin to when Microsoft bolted Windows 3.1 onto DOS.

There is also the question about why is it only on an iPhone that you have to pay an extra charge for tethering, the use of Micro SIM's, Apples controls on Apps, not able to connect other devices without buying some other connector from Apple etc but who am I to judge people that pull their pants down to buy an iPhone and then proceed to bend over for the duration of time they own said iPhone and then think it's actually the greatest thing out there.

There were actually predecessors to the iPhone in the smart market but like all new technologies they evolve over time. I was using an HP iPaq device in 2003 FYI but yet Apple fans have been brainwashed into thinking they basically invented the smartphone

Has this been confirmed? Find it strange they would pick Galway over Dublin as a choice for an actual Apple store (especially if its the first in the Republic {excluding the Belfast one})
Does no-one else think this? Maybe it suits their arty mantra or something I dunno...

"The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience," chief executive Mr Elop wrote in the note that was distributed to the Finnish company's staff and was first published by technology website Engadget.

fair enough google phone is as good if not better than the iphone(depending on the users requirements) but a statement like the above from the Nokia no1 has to be taken for what it is

No. it's pretty safe to assume that it's a case of someone not knowing the difference between a compuB store and an apple store.

Didn't take long for the thread to descend into a fanboy fight though.

I've an iPhone 4 and tethering is free (and awesome).

I love reading negative comments slagging the iPhone from people who think iPhone buyers are somehow stupid.

I had it from day one when I bought the original iPhone and some phone shop moron didn't get why I didn't want a "better" smartphone.

How about you try the product yourself? The majority of technical criticisms are completely moot for various reasons iPhone owners couldn't be arsed spelling out for you.

It's not a perfect product but it may as well be next to the utter garbage we've been asked to shell out for to this day from the major competitors.

The newspaper article said it would be run by Apple's UK/IRL licensee. Could that be CompuB anyway?

Up till there I was agreeing with you. That's just the same kind of attitude iPhone haters have against iPhones and doesn't really help anyone.

Edit: Not going to argue any more than that. This thread is about Apple stores. It's a pity people can't talk about the topic of the thread without getting into a mine is bigger than yours argument.

So an official Apple store will be able to offer the products cheaper than other retail outlets and offer an expanded product line?

yup, same way as bang and olufsson are authorised apple sellers too.

not to anger anyone outside the pale but if there's going to be an apple store ANYWHERE in the Republic of Ireland, it's going to be dublin, the footfall figures can't be beaten anywhere else on the island.

Apple don't discount products generally. The odd sale, but you aren't going to get it any cheaper in the Apple Store than you do online or in any shops. You will get better customer support than pretty much any shop anywhere however, if you need it, which you probably won't, but, nice to have.

To address a couple of things:

As a user of Windows/PC's for nearly 20 years, also having previously worked as a network administrator in Server 2000 and 2003 for a large user base, i can say that i generally prefer using Macs, something i never thought i'd say. But like most people who slag macs off, it wasn't until i actually started using them frequently that i realised how good they were. Yes they cost more, but the extra is worth it although that may be starting to change. Yes, alot of the reliability is down to the fact there isn't a whole lot of malware out there for OSX yet but the hardware/software relationship on a mac is second to none.

Apple do discounted products on their online refurbished store.I've bought a macbook through this and i saved 350 euros and it's working perfectly.

Before this story broke in The Sentinel, i had heard that two lads who used to work in Galmac were opening an official Apple store and it is not simply a reseller.

This is the only part truly relevant to the thread, just quoting it so it doesn't get overlooked due to fanboy related rage.
