Here's €5000 what would you buy?

Since this forum always has people coming on and asking people to suggest cars for them regarding the posters needs and requirements I though it might be something different to ask people what they would buy if they were handed a sum of money today and told use it to buy whatever car suits your needs today.

So with only your own requirements, needs and wants to take into consideration if you were handed €5000 today what would you go out and buy for yourself?

I'd buy a Mazda MX5 for the weekends for about €3,500 - €4,000 and spend the rest on a new set of wheels, a decent stereo and a good detail to have it looking perfect again.

I used to have one of these - fabulous cars, but very expensive to run. Were I buying in that bracket again, I think i'd reluctantly go for an LS430 - boring and no quattro, but at least they're properly built.

If I were to buy in the €5k bracket - I would ask myself what my priorities are when buying the car. That would decide it for me.
Ironicaly enough, my brother in law needs a new motor and has asked me to look out for a car for him in or around €5k.
He is a sales man and will be using a fuel card. He isn't really into cars that much and proper servecing and maintenance for the car would be well down his priority list, if his past cars are anything to go by. So, he will be looking for a reliable car that will be cheap to tax yet comfortable to drive for hours at a time.
Anyway, I have steered him away from diesel and pointed him in the general direction of Mazda 6, Toyota Avensis or Ford Mondeo. All petrol cars.

This is true but he has to pay for tax himself. He will be doing big(ish) miles also so a low milage car thats fairly new is more what suits him - who isn't a car nut.
I do agree with your mantra though. I personaly would love a luxo barge (if I could afford to run one).

Nice car but it would cost you the most of the 5000 to tax that yoke for two years

That's why there is great "value" to be had in 2.5 3 . and 4 litre motors at present. If ye don't mind taxin them lads, ye have the world at your feet

There is one of these parked beside me in our underground cp. It is without doubt one of the coolest machines I have seen in the flesh. Navy '94 Donegal reg I think.

I really must get some pics of it. There is also a classic Porsche right beside it, and right next to that one of those funny looking Citroen cars from the 70s with almost no ground clearance.
