Hey guys, just wondering what would be the best way to get some definition goin' on.
Is it better to build up muscle then add on definition or vice versa?
I'm 18 and weigh about 60 kg 5ft 5, and fairly fit, just trying to get a bit leaner and meaner.
    Cheers lads

Reduce body fat% or bulk up.....but you'll recieve the quickest/best results if you incorporate both.Best advice is reduce calories and increase protein while doing an intensive workout routine.

There is no such thing as toning, you can't "add" definition.

what you want is visible muscles. For this you need to have low Body fat, if you are very skinny you'll need to put on muscle first

+1 to the advice Mellor has given you.

At 60kg, I would probably say you need to build muscle first. For that, you'll need to lift heavy and eat loads of good food. You will put on fat if you are trying to put on muscle. You cannot put on muscle without fat. After you have increased your muscle mass, work on taking off the fat. This will give you the look you want.

Exactly The above . Get some muscle on your body. eat clean and plenty, your soon get some "definition" .

    Lift heavy and intense .
Get down the Gym 3 days a week and concentrate on your push and pulls to start with .Get strong at these exercises first then look to add in your isolation stuff.

    Hey there,

Just curious as to the science behind this. Its pretty interesting as I'm trying to achieve the toned look myself but through eating clean. I never hear a mention of bulking up - is that just for guys or if youre living a low carb diet and lifting weights can you not achieve that same toned look without bulking or putting fat on? Do you mean you have to eats loads of good fats...not stuff yourself with sugary carbs and stuff?
    Just wonderin like :)

You can get some results and possibly the "toned" look (I presume you mean lowish bodyfat and a small bit of muscle definition/mass) by eating clean, lifting heavy and not going over your maintenance calories amount. You will lose more fat than gain muscle by following this. By eating clean I mean getting plenty of protein (meat, fish, eggs, milk etc) and healthy fats (oily fish, extra virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts etc) into your diet, with some carbs (slow releasing ones - those that are low on the GI index like oats, most veg etc).

I would guess that this is the look that the majority of women out there would like to achieve and the above, in my opinion, is how to go about it.
