You're such a sexist, o1s1n, that's clearly alluding to elderly ladies in a derogatory fashion.

    Ageist!

Someone in another forum made the point that if yer man gray had been saying "stupid black person why are they a linesman", there wouldn't be all this "sure it's only a joke" defense. I have to agree...

The people Gray worked with most have really f*cking hated him. I'd say they're delighted he's gone.

this thread has sexist tendencies - in subtext form. course you have to be pretty non-sexist to see it.

anyhow...yeah,anyone can be dismissive of someone else for a range of reasons int the heat of a moment, but the commentary of Gray is ugly and reveals a contempt for women - indicative of a self-contempt.

Unless you're taking the piss, that claim is as stupid as "The most repressed demographic today is white, middle-class, western males".
And I don't disagree there is misandry prevalent out there btw...

That claim isn't that stupid though... Let's try imagine the below advert poking fun at female gender stereotypes, shall we? The advert was actually complained about plenty but the advertising standards agency keep it on-air because it was just meant to be fun etc. You can say anything you want about white western male because we don't have a history of victimhood and thus, it's seen as 'weak' for any of us to pipe up

It doesn't mean that it's "the most repressed demographic in society" though. It is true men can get sh1t for their gender today when it comes to a lot of stuff, no question about it, but claims like that (along with "feminism has gone too far - men have no rights now", yeah sure - "no" rights, and similar such nonsense) are just idiotic.

White western middle-class males are generally doing just fine... ditto their female counterparts.

    It could be anyone.
I mean, I personaly am not sexist, but who knows with the whole crazy hormone fuelled, bra burning, man hating, feminist/lesbian lobby out there now. It's a god damned mine field!

That ad should have been banned in the first place for just being f*cking sh*t.

Is that the same guy that did other cleaning product ads, the theme of which was always him getting praise from his wife for getting the house sparkling but it was really the cleaning product. Best was the secret complicit and women eh look he always shot to the watching males of the world while mopping up the praise from the wife.

If you're talking sexist classics, it has to Oi have you sussed new Windolene plus advert from years ago. Can't find it unfortunately.

Card-carrying feminazi here - and I will concede that old-skool sexism in advertising is fucking hilarious! :D

What's starting to get to me a lot is the improper use of the word sexism. It would appear saying anything negative about someone who happens to be a woman is becoming increasingly likely to be regarded as sexist.

Often mild misogyny is referred to as sexism, but they're very different things.

Then there's the outright bizarre. Was talking to someone on a forum who claimed being anti-abortion to be sexist because it controls what a woman does with her body. The only way an anti-abortion stance could properly be sexist would be if men could also get pregnant and were allowed to have abortions, but women weren't.

Similar argument and logical fallacy for people who want to ban women wearing a Burqa

I think words like sexism/racism have become too powerful and as a result are misused.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Yep, I don't like the word "sexism" at all - it is, as you say, open to abuse, as well as often being inaccurate. I disagree with you though that the sexist card is brought out when there's criticism of well known women - can't think of that happening at all tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,758 ✭✭✭✭TeddyTedson

Sexism makes the world go round as they say.
Rick O'Shea will be next. The mans a bit of a pest on the radio, but in fairness he doesn't mind what sex it is.

I think there was an element of it in Joan Burton's criticism of Browne. I mean we all know he treats men the exact same way and Burton was completely out of order on that episode.

I'm not actually specifically talking about well known women there either. Just things I've noticed in RL and online. There seems to be a tendency that if you criticise someone for whatever reason, if they are a women the person you're arguing it will tend to imply you're criticising them because they're female.

I thought that was ridiculous. There were actually women on this forum saying that she was right in accusing him of it too. Vincent is like that with everyone, it is his way of filtering through the bull**** she was spouting.

    Wrong.

He wasn't being sexist, he was being plain dismissive and rude.He interrupted her 53 times during that show and didn't interrupt Higgins (speaker of the real nonsense) at all. Unfortunately for his guests, if he has it in for you, you haven't a hope of leaving with your credibility in tact.

    Wrong.

She would not let ANYONE get a word in when it was their turn to talk, Vincent asked her to answer the questions but she kept going into the same waffle again and again.

Yeah I hate that crap when he would have been the very same to a man. This is Vincent Browne - as already pointed out, a journalist not exactly renowned for his bedside manner.

How many of those 52 times was he interrupting Joan interrupt someone else though?

Higgins was nowhere near as rude as she was. As you said yourself it wasn't a sexism issue, and she claimed it was based on a man being rude to her(which I don't think he was), which I think is a good example of words like sexism/racism having too much power.
