Was just pondering the fickleness of the internt. One site seems to dominate it's particular sphere and then gets slain by a superior alternative.

If a site came along that was Boards.ie but better what would you do?

What's the reason for being reasonable?

    Is that an unreasonable question?

Well BBS went away, forums took over
When Forums get to cumbersome something else will replace them.

The admin team may move to the new system and archive this site.

I think an aggregate listing system with built in content voting will replace forums myself (see reditt/digg/delicious)

So in answer to your question, the real thing that needs to continue is the boards.ie community not the website as is.

It's bound to happen sooner or later, daft.ie might be bought over by a large multinational and boards.ie might become even more commercial than it already is. When a better site comes along people will leave here and join it, it's only natural.

Better is subjective. Beta was better than VHS, Mac was better than windows etc etc. Dont rely on better to sway your average punter. What sways them is inertia. Popular breeds popular. And popular is often down to some judgement, but more luck.

To replicate Boards discourse, I sometimes drink a Toilet Duck, Smithwicks and Piz Buin combo, hold my breath for 3 minutes, then simply email insults to myself.

You'd be amazed how often it tops Boards for cogent argument.

I've already left for greener pastures I'm afraid.

But just to lessen the blow for you mere mortals on here who rely on my annoying, self-deprecating assh*ole posts to shine a little light into your otherwise dreary monotone lives I have employed someone to take over my username for a few years just to let you down slowly.

So, over the next 3 years, you will see AnonoBoy's posts becoming less and less until one day they'll just stop and nobody will really notice. All that will be left is a faint aching in the back of your brain, a longing for a fat, balding little f*cker who used to p*ss you off every now and then. But you won't be able to put a name on that longing and you will go about your day, a little bit sadder but with your soul a little bit richer for having known me.

And my name will be but dust on the wind..........

I predict in two years time I'll look back at my boards posts and lament at my lost innocence, rejoice at my witty banter and scold myself for being such a 'tard. As it was with my bebo account, so it shall be with boards.

I'll probably jump the boards ship when the bad people start invading it, like they did bebo.

My join date is 17-10-2000 so obviously Boards has changed considerably during that time but I think the core feel of the site has stayed the same.

As long as they keep that community feeling then I don’t see why I would go and join a new site I have no history of posting in.

Although many of you don’t know me I feel like I am part of the boards community and have contributed to it in some small way and so I don’t see how I would be lured away to use something else.

(The only exception is in relation to a forum suggestion of mine for street art which was rejected and because of which I use a different site to get / share info and pic's about this topic.)

I do think that things like the adds with sound are a bit annoying but as I am not a subscriber I realize that I really have no right to complain about that and that boards has given me a lot for nothing for so long that it will take a hell of a lot for me to move.

    In all seriousness :P

    boards.ie will be surpassed.
Lets be honest, boards has risen over the last decade. Whos to say another message board wont over the next decade.

Who would of thought Virgin / zavvi, woolworths, chartbusters etc would close. I mean myspace was number 1 at one point. Then bebo took over majority of its european users. Facebook just wiped the floor with both of them.

I think boards will outlive facebook, twitter and all those other crap sites. They'll be replaced by something cooler.
BOARDS HAS NEVER BEEN OR WILL EVER BE COOL, its not a passing fad.

I can't see people leaving boards for another site because it would essentially be the same, Unlike facebook and other social networking sites it's aimed at general discussion. I think there are a few others somewhat similar like Thumped but the moderating is terrible and as much as people tend to dislike it, It's essential for the site and other posters.

I kept coming across this Boards thingy over the years and now I'm a member. Boards is not the flavour of the month or a passing fad, it's something different and more durable perhaps.

An old saying..'Familiarity breeds contentment!' I doubt that another site similar to boards.ie would be as good as this one. After all boards.ie have been about longer and have thousands of loyal members. So I think that boards.ie is in for the long haul.

    Amen to that :)

I think facebook will be here for life now.

Not only would I be selling any shares in the firm now if I had any, I predict that in two decades time, people will look back on that movie about the facebook nerd as we might a documentary about deely bobbers.
IE with a compulsive horror, complete incomprehension and a vague twinge at the back of one's mind that might be a hint of faint recognition.

something I have often thought about.... in the end, if we keep doing a good job and respect the users and not get complacent we will last another decade I hope... (its 12 years old now!).

Bebo is a johnny-come-lately.... I remember when Geocities was named Time Man of the Year (afaicr). It was closed for good last year. Everyone thought the internet was over then too...

I could write a thesis on this topic but really, I think so long as we respect the communities here and are fair to them they will continue to give us a huge site. It may not make money but one day it will and if we respect that, it may go on in perpetuity... like The Well or GaiaOnline (go look at GaiaOnline to see something about 100 times the size of Boards and see what growth is still left....)

No reason it can't. The Well looks like a real blast from the past to me, but still seems to be very strong.

A quote from The Well when they had their 20th anniversary in 2005.
"When we did our 10th anniversary, I was very tense about the future of The Well," Williams said. "But now I'd be very surprised not to see a 40th."

It's quite ironic that those who I would consider are part of the Bebo generation, well, the age group rather than the actual generation... will soon have no knowledge of what Bebo even is/was.

After trying to ascertain boards policy on multiple accounts and not really getting any answers (I got a headache reading through the threads on the subject), I decided to just do it.

Maybe yourself or DeV might clarify that? Apologies if it isn't that hard to find, but I couldn't anyway.

I'd like to get some advice on some business related stuff and my existing account and username is known to quite a few people, not just on boards.

I don't have any particular desire for people to know what I'm thinking/doing, nearly before I know myself. Posting it under my existing account would give away who I work for and what I am planning. Not really a good idea when the business is at a delicate stage, albeit quite healthy, all things considered.

But back on topic... what it specifically that killed off Bebo in the end I wonder?

Boards is an online community, and as such it comprises of User generated content, what Sets boards apart IMO is the level of specification to it, and the vast amount of User Groups.

however I was part of another Irish online community called P45.net, they took themselves Waaaaaay too seriously, as such a lot of the members migrated to other fora and the rest just disappeared up their own holes.

So long as boards ''keeps it Real" it should be around for a while to come

I'd say it was all those stupid apps, loading a bebo page in its final days was like loading a movie. Those stupid animals you could feed, your favourite position is retrograde cowgirl apps, your bands song automatically playing, cause we all want to hear the 1st 5 seconds of rape the queen playing full blast in the library and the general clutter killed it.
Facebook changed that by deciding what you could and cant have, if you want to share something thats fine but the person has to click on it.

So in conclusion fúck you bebo, and when something better emerges fúck you facebook

Facebook was much more appealing to a wider audience (simple, straight forward and effective) in the end anyone over 16/17 just moved away from the kiddies like social network they call bebo. Not even factoring in all the crap they did to it and then it just seemed like way too much effort to use. Also factor in the whole privacy issues and music profiles becoming null (where even your own original music was removed)

I have been a devoted Boards user for a long time.

I also use Mumsnet since 2006. This has loads more users, and over the years I've started many threads there asking about stuff - I can be guaranteed answers within a few minutes on Mumsnet, while on some Boards forums you may never get any answers.

Interestingly, in RL I only know 2 Boards users (my brothers, who introduced me to it!) while I've only come across a few that know about it but complain it's too complicated to use - and these people are not PC illiterate! I've noted newbies being lynched for making mistakes in their posts, just like drivers being intolerant of "L" drivers - of course these people were born knowing how to drive!

People have always enjoyed discussing subjects and hearing different opinions, and message boards gives more scope as you're more likely to encounter somebody who has had the experience in the cyber world rather than RL, who can tell it from the horse's mouth!

I can see Boards being around for a very long time especially After Hours, Parenting and Personal issues.
