In the market for a computer capable of editing hd video

Okay so I edit hd gameplay recorded with a Happauge HD PVR as some of you may or may not know already. At the moment it is impossible to edit the recorded footage without lag in Vegas. My computer currently is a Dell XPS 710 desktop. Ive 3gb ram, not a notion of the rest lol. Im not exactly hardware saavy.

Im looking now to buy or build (god forbid) a new computer. One that is well capable of editing the hd gameplay.

I dont exactly have a budget but obviously as we would all i'd love for it to be cheap-ish :pac:

    Anyone recommend anything? Deals atm?

    Help very much appreciated! :)

Right, let me be the first in saying, that PC should be fine for editing videos on Sony Vegas. It's your settings that need to be changed when rendering. I've had similar problems. It's the horizontal issues you're having along with stuttering yeah? I render in wmv format in 1080p with no issues whatsoever. I've had issues otherwise in other formats on Vegas

No no, it frequently stops responding and its impossible to playback while editing. It just lags constantly.

what is the exact specs of your 710?
plus if you do need to get a new computer your better off building as it's way cheaper and better quality

Building one, the computer I have is over 5 years old now I reckon its just worn out.

you can either look it up on youtube and learn for yourself or have someone build it for you (like myself who offer it as a service) and if it is general ware and tare then upgrading might be pointless and a waste of cash if the problem turned out to be something else.
so if you want i can quickly spec you out a pc for you.

That'd be great, just a list of what I need and decent enough to do what I want. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

sorry i forgot to add the os >.<
cause when i spec out a computer for a client i incude a oem copy with the build (€20 for both the build and the os) but you can buy one for about €100 online

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

specced out another computer for you thats slightly cheaper but is a quad core rather than a hex core and has a slightly slower graphics card plus a smaller hdd i'll post the screencap when i get on my comp im. on my phone atm

I got this recommended for me to do after effects, you could probably half the amount of ram and it would come in just under or around a grand.

great set up you reccomended so while the premium is completely worth its just to much overkill for what the comp is needed i think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭Sprrratt

Wow 12gb. Thanks IrishMetalHead for all your hope. Whats the general procedure once I purchase the parts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

    in regards of building it?
well theres loads vids on youtube if ya want to have a stab at it yourself or you can contact someone who can build it for you for the lazier route =P

well personally i don't think that it's that hard to do but if you are having doubts it's worth to look into someone doing it for you, i could do it for you for €20 including a copy of windows 7 but i say you live just out of reach from me =/

btw here is the other comp i specced and priced for just under €550:

Thats brilliant thanks again. Isnt pixmania a little dear tho?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

not really i find between them and dabs.ie they are the cheapest if your buying multipal items where as HWVScharge a flat rate of €30 for shipping
komplett used to be dirt cheap but there prices sky rocketed when they introduced free shipping

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

ohh forgot to say if you want to add another 4gb of ram to either build to bring them up to 8gb just add another €43.90 =]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭Sprrratt

Say I wished to buy a computer for use tomorrow. Do you know of any deals? Is there a good deal on pixmania even? Talking built computers already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

i could have a look for you but oem computer cost atleast 20 to 25% more plus there heavily unbalanced, but i heard if you order from hardwareversand and tey'll put the whole thing together for you for €20 if your intrested in that option?

    Thanks IrishMetalHead,
Just used your specs and ordered from hardwareversand, upped Ram to 6Gb and HDD to 1Gb and dropped the build service. Can confirm DHL delivery is €30. Total cost €651.90. Looking forward to my first build

Ooops, forgot to check if 3 sticks were compatible with the board and 3 channel did not exist when I last bought ram.
Will just install 2x2gb and use the spare to stir my coffee, lucky the price was not much different. Order has allready shipped, thanks for the post anyway

could try it tho it might run in a seperate channel by itself just make sure the 2 other sticks are in the primeray slots first

I know its a bit late but you would have been better of picking up two new hard-drives, raw files on one, rendered to another. Would have made a huge difference without buying a new machine.

FWIW, if you were going to use the extra module, you might as well get another 2 GB stick so you have 8GB in dual channel. Then look up some interesting things to do with that much RAM. No point in having it if it's not doing anything useful.

You want dual channel RAM, not triple. Only an LGA1366 socket CPU uses triple channel memory.

That GPU is fine, but the 5770 offers a fair bit better performance for not much of a price increase. ~€8

since the hex core cpu's have dropped in price aswell would you like one of them instead of the quad core cpu? the 2 extra cores would really help you with video editing and only costs about €34 more

    CPU: AMD Phenom II 955 X4 - €109.04
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71274746#post71274746Or: O

    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=30583&agid=1004

Just went with your original choice. When it gets here assembled do I just need to pop the Windows CD in and boot it up? Last thing, what about a sound card. If im plugging in any old mini jack speaker there should already be a slot shouldnt there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

all you have to do is install the operating system and drivers yes which is dead simple.
they'll sned you both OS disc and the driver discs for the graphics card and motherboard but your always better off downloading the latest ones off the manufacturers website (amd.com for graphics and msi.com for the motherboard).

And when you said original choice do you mean the case?
also which cpu and ram kit are you going with since i recommended 2 of each?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭IrishMetalhead

If you are choosing the original case I chose just keep in mind it has gone up in price by almost a tenner and you get these two cases that have same level of cooling for less:

    NZXT M59 - €60.33
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=28606&agid=631

    CoolerMaster 690 II - €65.70
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?adp=0&aid=38379&agid=631&apop=0

Or if you can get this case for the same price which has better cooling and more features like a fan controller:

    NZXT Lexa S - €70.13
    http://www3.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?adp=0&aid=29472&agid=631&apop=0

But if you just prefer the styling on the Midgard more than anything else then by all means get it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭Sprrratt

Picked the 4GB sticks with since you reckon they'll be well capable :) Liking that NZXT M59 case might pick that ;) cheaper too :D gonna order later have to use a friends CC. So really the only drivers i have to manually install are the motherboard and the gfx card? Grand if so... Will there be a headphone jack built in?
