Adopting a new cat where there's one already in the home

I'd really like to adopt a cat and am hoping it won't upset my current cat who is about three years old. I'm afraid that the current cat would get annoyed and do a legger, but hoping that it would be good company for her as there are no other cats around for her to play with. Has anybody else had good or bad experiences…
