Adopting a new cat where there's one already in the home

I'd really like to adopt a cat and am hoping it won't upset my current cat who is about three years old. I'm afraid that the current cat would get annoyed and do a legger, but hoping that it would be good company for her as there are no other cats around for her to play with.

Has anybody else had good or bad experiences with introducing a new cat to a home where there's been an established one there already?
