What are the alternatives? Knowing everything before you try and do it? Impossible. You're going to be learning to program new things on your own for the rest of your life, especially in things like multimedia which is constantly evolving. 3 years ago how was CSS3 support? 6 years ago smartphones didn't exist as we know it! By the time your finished any programming course there will be a new trend which you will need to learn all on your own, and then 10 years after you finish - what do you think it's going to be like! :D

Sounds about right. Programming is trial and error really. Youtube and "Right click , View source, Copy and Paste" helps a lot aswell. :D

Ha, yeah! I always do things like that, especially for websites with fancy CSS!

Nice one for the info. Thatll help a lot of people get an idea. Surprised they dont publish these on the WIT site just for the sake of a bit of extra info.

Are they all hour long classes?

For example on Monday did you have 2 hours off after 1st class?

Also what your saying is if you chose 3D & Video as a module you dont get a half day?? That would be handy info to know for someone who needs a half day friday if they had kids or whatever.

It doesn't help if all you have is notepad and you have a missing ' or , and no matter how long you look you can't find the problem but someone will glance over your shoulder and point out where the problem is

They are http://www.wit.ie/current_students/student_affairs/academic_timetables but it is only accessibly from within the college network (which is a massive pain in the butt)

Yes they are all one hour classes (well most lecturers let you out on the hour, but some like to keep you until quarter past the hour) You don't get to chose what modules you have in 3rd year. You do that in the optional 4th year.

Use Sublime Text 2 as your text editor, select the language and it's colours will indicate if something is off! :D

I never got why it's only on college network, I know a 4th year Applied Student made a timetable App for his 4th year project, wanted to integrate with the actual timetable but they wouldn't give him access to db! Like if they just set up an account for him with read only access there wouldn't have been an issue! Typical short sightedness...

I had the class on the 2nd floor with the computers that are slow as hell. So I couldn't really download anything I wanted.

My brother is in DIT and their timetables are online, granted you do have to login, but I don't think people would mind that. I think I'll drop them an email asking about it. I am planning on doing a timetable app this year. And to think the college wants to be a university...

Some of the college PC's are a nightmare. Sorry to say it, but people realistically need their own laptop for these courses from 2nd year on! Yeah, there are so many things wrong with WIT, no way is it close to Uni status!

I am going into 4th year this year (woop!) so I'll have my laptop in a good bit. Anyone here done the 4th year of Multimedia Applications?

    Cheers

Edit - youre not on the network so you probably cant.

Yep, I did it the year before last. What do you want to know? PM me if you want.

Yeah I did it last year so any questions just fire away as I know they were going to try and change a few things this year

Sure I can if you don't mind waiting until 4th or 5th of September :P

It would be helpful if I could get a copy of everything you did in 4th year.? *I promise I will do no harm or cheat with that information.*
No really, in general what is the course like in 4th year (I know it'll be a lot of work, but other than that). I picked the network security and conceptual game design/Server side scripting (it'll be JSP I think) modules in the first semester and apple mac programming and practical game design (I think) for the second semester.

All I can say to you is make sure you know what you'll be doing for your final year project as the faster you can start your documentation and planning for it you'll be better off. As for the subjects you picked were ye told that these were defiantly going ahead? Conceptual game design from the lads that did it in my year enjoyed it and the work load wasn't too intense, As for network security or server side scripting none of us touched these modules. The same with practical game design. MAC programming requires a lot of work and with the mac lab being so full unless u have access to a MAC you will be doing alot of your work after 5. The module focuses on C so having an idea about that going in will be an advantage

I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure how practical/possibly it would be to do with the time constraint/at all. Will the lecturers over us be able to let us know?
The ones I've picked are pretty sure to go ahead. Yea I heard the game design wouldn't be too bad (I had Karl last year). I don't think I'll mind MAC programming. I don't have a MAC, but I was thinking I'll probably be staying in after 5 most days anyway. And I'll be staying near college street and they have a few MAC labs.

    Hi all,

I have a place on this course starting next month. Good to read the comments on here I've learned more about the course. I'm a mature student of 34 so have been out of school for a while!! Was wondering what level it starts at in first year. I'm by no means a maths genius or a programmer but I have done a basic web design course and also the
COMPTIA A+ exams. Was just asking so I'd get an idea of the work load and of the pace of the lectures. I've been through the typical college experience when I finished school and was pretty lazy as regards attendance and study so am committed to do it right but will also be working outside of college hours. Any feedback or opinions would be welcome.

Your similar to myself just a small bit older.

Ive been to WIT before and 5 pieces of advice ill give you right now.

1 College is a balancing act. Its about balancing your work with your life. If you just go into every lecture, pay attention and get projects in on date you will nearly be guaranteed a pass no matter what you do socially. If an 18 year old can go drinking 3 times a week and pass everything an emotionally mature 34 year old will have no problems at all.

2 your not gonna be the only older student there. I was there during the boom and even then there was a few 30 - 60 year olds. Maybe 60% of the class was over 25 at least so dont assume the class will be full of people who did there leaving cert in 2012.

3 Get networking with others in your situation. You will learn as much from other students than you will off the lecturers. Who knows, you might even start a business venture with other older students in your class. Read up about other IT companies and youll see how common this is.

4 Keep notes organised. Nothing worse than at the end of the year or before tests and you literally have noting to refer to all because you couldnt be bothered turning up for class. Ties in with point 1.

If you want to be really hi tech you could scan all your notes in and save them to an ipad for easy transport. Create a dropbox account and back them all up. Access them anywhere.

5 Maths worry most people. Same as myself. Back to point 1 again. Attend every class and keep perfect notes.
Your no different to 1000s of others. If they can do it so can you. Not to mention the fact we have Youtube. Make yourself an account on youtube. Create a playlist on whats relevant and watch them day and night if you have to. Thats where a good tablet or large screen smartphone and headphones comes in. Same goes to every subject. these days you literally have access to lectures from top university lecturers at the touch of a button. Take advantage.

If you have any questions you dont want to ask in public or whatever feel free to drop us a PM

In relation to doing the Mac Programming module this year, I've been mainly looking up Objective-C, thought it would mainly consist of that. Or is it just C?

I've got a letter from WIT with register details and registered already. However I've applied for grant months ago and have submitted every detail they needed. I haven't received any letter from them yet and don't even know if i'll be getting it, but since I applied for it, I checked the box during registration saying I've applied for grant so I didn't pay the 2k college fee. I haven't received anything from SUSI yet, what am I supposed to do in this case? I have to bring the letter into WIT next week. Anything helpful would be appreciated.

I filled in SUSI application and got a letter from them 2 days after. That was last week.

Id ring SUSI. Is it close to call wether your getting a grant or not? What does the site say about your online application?

Worst comes to worst You might have to just pay the first installment of the fees and get it refunded if the grant comes through.

I've applied months ago but the rest of the documents, such as my parents' incomes and so on were only sent out like a week ago because it took that long to get the papers from the work.

It says the status is submitted, but but the application status itself is shown as empty..

Yeah thats it. Bring that with you to registration like everyone else.

AFAIK if you get that form you qualify for at least 50% of the fees refunded.

Most likely you will get the grant anyway if they took a quick glance at your form and let you through. Id say its just a matter of getting the "proof" sent into them now.

Think I left the induction early by accident. Left after the course leader fella showed us the semester layout sorta thing and gave us the talk in the lecture room yolk when your one came in and said she needed the room. Because I'm just that stupid. :pac:

Did ye get timetables and stuff after that?
