When ironworker Jamie Eisel split from his Irish wife Patricia last year, most thought she had got the raw end of the deal.

She seemed shattered by the break-up, while Jamie was said to have toughed it out and moved on to a new romance.

Now that his estranged wife – known to friends as Trisha – has won $21.5m on the New York State Lottery, they may have to change their minds. The question is whether he is likely to try laying claim to any part of her windfall.

article-1351873-0CF76E95000005DC-46_468x586.jpg Winner: Patricia Eisel (centre) who won $21,500,000 on the New York lotto, back at home in Tullamore, Co Offaly, with her family from left: sister Trezann, brothers Brendan and Brian and her mother Margaret

The couple, who have three young sons, only split up last summer after their lengthy marriage hit the rocks. Jamie continues to live near his 40-year-old wife and children in Long Beach, New York.

‘They’re still good friends,’ said one neighbour, who lives downstairs from Trisha and the children in the modest two-family house where they have the upstairs apartment.

article-1351873-0CF76E9D000005DC-433_233x423.jpg Split: Iron worker Jamie Eisel

‘They share the kids between them. As far as I know, it’s all very amicable.’

New Yorker Jamie is an ironworker and part-time bartender.

Trisha has not been wearing her wedding ring during her trip home to Ireland.

‘He left her,’ said a Tullamore resident who knows the family. ‘It will be interesting now to see if he will go and seek a share of the win.’

But as Jamie pondered his next move, Trisha took a break from her job at The Saloon bar and spent this weekend celebrating her good fortune with her mother Margaret Daly, her brothers and her sister in Tullamore – and speaking of the lucky breaks that led to her lucky break.

Trisha only won the jackpot because her flight home to Ireland had been cancelled due to the severe weather before Christmas.

That apparently cruel twist of fate meant she was in New York to buy the lottery ticket that won her $21,500,000.

Despite her newfound riches, the 40-year-old mother of three young boys – Cory, nine, Ryan, seven, and four-year-old Liam – is determined to keep away from wild extravagance. Instead of treating herself to a first-class seat on the flight home, Trisha settled for an economy ticket.

But once back in Ireland, she allowed herself a few treats. She booked herself and her family into a suite at the Tullamore Court Hotel where the most expensive room is the presidential suite, costing €170 a night.

The Daly family toasted Trisha’s good luck there with chilled bottles of champagne.

Talking yesterday about the difference her newfound fortune will make to her life Trisha said: ‘I have been in America since ’95. I babysat at first and right now I live in Long Beach. I waitress and bar-tend and mind kids.

‘It’s a struggle to keep it all together but it’s good – the bar’s good where I work. But this is going to make it a lot better.’

article-1351873-0CF76EA1000005DC-269_468x731.jpg I've won!: A delighted Patrica Eisel pictured in her home town of Tullamore

In the tradition of lottery winners everywhere, Trisha has sworn ‘to keep life normal, no big purchases’. She even said she’d keep working ‘for a while’.

Priority number one, she said, was ‘a house with a yard – no more renting’.

She spoke about how the heavy snow in Ireland had prompted her to cancel her trip home for Christmas. It was while on a quick errand into a grocery store while on her way to a laundrette near her home in New York that she made the fateful purchase of a lottery ticket.

Having won seven dollars on a previous lottery draw, she ‘asked the guy, “What’s on tonight?”. He said, “Power Ball and Lottery.” I added a dollar to my $7 ticket and said, “Give me a $4 quick pick on both”.’

Within hours of the draw, she realised that she had purchased the winning ticket. She started to shake at the realisation but did nothing about the ticket.

‘I kept it for three weeks,’ she said yesterday.

‘I got nervous, I didn’t want any attention on my kids and I wanted to think.’

He's still her husband, of course he's entitled to half. Sure, women have grabbed future earnings off of ex-husbands on many occasions.

    I'll marry her for half!

If there's a battle, lawyers will take a good cut from it, whether he wins or not.....

But we read a thread last month on some bitch who left her husband for another man but lawyered up and got a huge sum when he won the lotto.

    Anyone remember this?

That's not extravagant at all, €170 a night isn't bad for a hotel suite.

maybe she doesn't wanna turn into a snobby fooker just because she has a few pound now and wants to celebrate with friends and family.

She won 21 million ... but do you know how much she actually gets? It's something like 7.6 million, due to tax ... can you believe that? Stinger!

Ive won FA on the Irish lottery.

Cant buy the UK one unless you have a UK credit card, or want to drive up north every few weeks, not arsed.

Is it possible to buy USA lottery from Ireland via credit card?

I do understand that when in a marriage a couple share the money, and if they divorce the man/woman gets a share because in the eyes of the law they contributed to the success (or whatever you want to call it) in gaining that money.

BUT how does this apply in this situation, where the woman won the lotto all by herself? Why should he get any of it, if he had no part in winning the money?

The odd's of winning the Uk or us lotteries are much lower than the irish lotto, they use more ball's so your better off sticking to the irish lotto

In life you make your decisions and then you got to live with him. He probably still doesn't love his wife and now he can safely relax and know his children will get the best in education and opportunities and live in a wonderful house. He may get a little irked at her future partner but that's a problem he has to deal with.

Christ, I could do with winning the lottery. I'm so broke.

All this snobbery about Tullamore is ridiculous! She won a life changing amount and people are giving out because she decided to go home and spend time with her family, rather than going out and blowing the money?

Yeah 7.6 million is shít allright, can see her shopping in the reduced section in Tesco's.

Im inclined to say he should get something merely as a knee jerk reaction to that story about the women who got a cut after leaving her husband a decade earlier, really angried up my blood but then i actually thought about it and yer man can go and fcuk right off.

At the end of the day, if he doesnt get a penny, at least he can take comfort in knowing that his kids will have every opportunity now.

I think she is setting an example towards her non-immediate family, the "family" who won't get a share. By being stingy ATM she is telling them "I am not giving you anything, don't call."

It's run by New York State, they certainly tax it like other state lotteries

Apparently she wouldn't have been if she opted for the installment method of payment. Because she choose the lump sum, she is taxed.

Hmmm i wonder are they legally seperated? If they have nothing signed maybe the husband will have a better case.

If i was him i'd take her to the cleaners as women usually do to the poor men folk!

He didn't really kiss goodbye to millions though, because she wouldn't have bought that particular lottery ticket were they still together.

I think he left her for another woman so Id imagine the other woman is a little nervous now.

What's the bets he want's to go back to his wife.

The seperation sounds to be pretty amicable so I can't imagine there being much hostility, then again, money can show a different side to a person.

I wonder why she went public though or do you have to with US lotterys?

Lucky woman, hope it brings her happiness.

I fückin' know. She's got 21 mill burning a hole in her arse pocket and she flies "cattle class" back to Tullamore. Fückin' knacker.

By the way...Long Beach New York is a slum. Been there. She should move to Monaco or Biarritz. Although they mightn't be able to find the tae-bags so easy, like!

F#ckin stupid lotto amounts. 21+ million is too much for anyone. Why not break it up, twenty-one people could win a million each.

'oh I'll just turn up to ma mundane job on munday mornin', 6am, as I always do'
Fucking fools, should have their lotto confiscated.

If I recall, they don't give you the full winnings immediately. You get a small lump sum, and the rest is given over a period of 10-25 years or something.

Well, unless they've changed the rules.

If i won the lotto i would give my ex husband some of the money because even though we are not married anymore and i am engaged to someone, he is the father of my children and he has been good to me, unless you hate them or they were a bad person why wouldn't you want to give them something.
